Stellar sequel

I had said, when I reviewed Strength, the first book in this series, that if book 2 was as good as book 1, Ms. Butler would be added to my very short will-pre-order-from author list. She made it. She definitely made it.

Courage continues the story where Strength left off. Rena and Wallace's relationship moves forward (Yes!), though not without some snags along the way--some very heart-twisting, tear-evoking snags. Alliances are tested, new dimensions of characters are brought out by circumstances, and ERA's plot advances as a seemingly unstoppable force. Caught in the middle of it all are Rena, Wallace, and new character Corynn Catley, whom I like a lot.

I can't tell you much more or I'll give too much away. But I can tell you that Corynn is a great addition to the cast and Cole redeems himself from his crimes in book 1. He hasn't stopped committing them (snicker), but he shows us a softer, likeable side when it comes to Rena.

Courage is a flawless read and such a perfect sequel to Strength, I can't wait for book 3! It easily earned 5 stars.

Iâm hooked on this series.

This installment picks up right where the first left off, a comforting feeling. All the characters I fell for in book one are back, though not all the same versions of themselves. We also get to meet some interesting new characters. While I didnât gush, swoon, or geekout over this one the way I did the first book, Iâm still hooked on the series, Rena, and Wallace.

What I liked:

Iâm still enjoying the realistic and nostalgic depiction of college life. I love how Rena continues to be a layered character, not all sweet and predictable, though sheâs not a difficult character to understand. I like the unsettling kindness and supportive role the psychotic twin, aka Cole, is currently filling, but I guess we find out more about him in the next book.

I also liked the introduction of Corynn and her part in pulling Rena and Wallace, both apart and closer together. I liked getting a closer look into the lives and families of Rena and Wallace.

What I had issues with, but still could appreciate:

The drama between girlfriends. An immature misunderstanding based on insecurities. Untold secrets revealed way too late. Breaking oneself down with unnecessary guilt over people who hurt you. These are just some of the themes that make this story hard to stomach, yet enhance it in ways that canât be fully described other than to say, it makes it feel more real.

Iâm not usually the type to get caught up on romantic issues, but this love story is one I can get behind. Iâm actually okay with the fact that the love story took on a greater role in this book.
