Ancient Israel faced an antagonistic, hostile culture, but division posed the greatest threat. A perspective of preservation, holding to the way things always were, clashed with a mentality that sought change for change’s sake. God sent the prophet Elijah to preach repentance, reconciliation, and the humility that would transform slaves into sons.
