Luke 3:1-3 KJV - NOW in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being the governor in Judea, and Herod being Tetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of Ituraea, and the region of Trachonitus, and Lysanias the tetrarch of Abilene, Annas and Ciaphas being the High Priests, the word of God came unto John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness. And he came into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins;

The first verse gives is our context: It was the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, the third of the Caesars (behind Julius and Augustus). Judea was a land of political upheaval and instability. The Life and Times of Jesus the Messiah by Alfred Edersheim paints a great picture, telling us that every time a new governor would come to power the priesthood (prescribed only to descendants of Aaron) would be appointed to someone the pontificate liked, Annas being one who had been removed and replaced by several eventually leading to his son in law Ciaphas. The "king" was Herod Antipas, a descendant of the Idumean (Edomite) Herod the Great. The scepter had finally departed from Judah (Genesis 49:10), but it was in this dark hour, a prophet in Camel's hair comes on the scene declaring "The Kingdom of God is at hand!"

Our Goal: To know our Savior on a more intimate level and to know that the words he said were put there by God the Father (Deuteronomy 18:18-19).
