Often we, like Paul, are pressed on two sides: life and death. But like Paul we, too, do not know which to choose. However, we need to be continually reminded that as long as we are living here under the providence of God it is "more needful" for someone that we are here. Yes, to depart and be with Christ is far, far better, but until our departure it is "more needful" for us to be here.

Paul was thankful when the gospel was preached whatever the intent but he was not endorsing a false gospel. He pronounced a curse on a false gospel and those who preached it. May we never become envious of anyone who speaks the truth of the gospel.

Paul went through many trials and afflictions to end up in bonds in Rome, but he viewed them as providential dealing for the furtherance of the gospel. He also considered his bonds as "in Christ" and not in the bonds of Rome. May we view each providential occurence in our lives as an opportunity to spread the gospel.

Abounding love does not come automatically. Paul prayed that the Philippians' love would abound, but it was though knowledge and discretion. With such love the saints will be filled with the fruits of righteousness.
