Psalm 40 begins with the announcement of a grand deliverance-from a fearful pit-surely hell. Believers can bring up many examples of God's deliverance. Christian nations, congregations, families, and individuals all have examples. But surely the great deliverance that is ultimately in view here is the deliverance of the whole church from the pit when Christ our head came to bear our sins.

If you are unfamiliar with this terminology, it has to do with the 1000-year reign of Christ that is spoken of in Revelation 20. The word millennium literally means 1000 years. When we speak of Premillennialism, Amillennialism, and Postmillennialism, we speak of the millennium in connection with the kingdom of Christ and His return.

This section of Hebrews is filled with admonition to continue with Christ so that we might enter God's rest.

A lot of people hear us talking about covenants and Covenant Theology and wonder what we mean. Perhaps that is the case with some of you. Today we are going to look at Covenant Theology. And then at how it impacts the growth of the church to believe it.

Today we are going to look at what God has provided for us that we might be alerted to a heart that is declining from God.

This is an important, but very large subject to address. It is important because so many people, even church leaders, do not accept what the Bible teaches about sin and Satan. Many, for example, deny that Satan is a personal agent- and many look at sin as something other than a transgression of God's law for which we are all culpable.

The goal that is set before you is entering God's rest by going on with Christ.

The Bible actually has a lot to say about angels, and it is a subject that we can sometimes neglect in our Presbyterian and Reformed Churches.

Today we are going to take a closer look at what we are taught in Hebrews 4 about the Sabbath that remains for the people of God under the New Covenant. We need to look a little more closely at this because it is a matter that is often disputed in our modern times. We reject the day of rest because we have hardened our hearts and refuse to enter God's rest which is represented by the Sabbath day.
