VALUING TALENT: What Thais Can Learn from Netflix—Part 6 (Series on Thai Values 4.0)
VALUING TALENT
With no hesitation and not an ounce of shame, I am going to restate my argument. The national dream of ‘Thailand 4.0’ will become a disappointing reality unless scores and scores of courageous young Thais choose to challenge some of their most deeply ingrained and tenacious values.
‘Thai-ness,’ or khwam pen thai (ความเป็นไทย), is a wonderful thing. Who can argue against the collective beauty of smiles, showing respect with a heartfelt wai (ไหว้), extending kindness to strangers, building trust through the reciprocity of bunkhun (บุญคุณ), or steering unseemly moments away from open confrontation? There’s a beauty to all that.
But ‘Thai-ness’ is a wonderful thing until it isn’t.
I’m not trying to insult anyone. If you are Thai and you really care about the future of the Thai economy, you had better be ears wide open and eyes wide open on this one.
Certain deeply embedded Thai values represent a clear and present danger to our hopes of embracing innovation as a primary means of building a new economy.
Re-read that last sentence.
To refuse to adapt our values—to simply stay the course—will leave us sorely disadvantaged in our economic competition with other countries. Stay right where we are culturally, and we will stay right where we are economically. There are just too many values cluttering the pathway to explosive, creative innovation.
We need ‘Thai Values 4.0,’ a revamped and refreshed version of traditional values that looks to the future without rejecting the past.
I am not dictating those values. That would be unbearably presumptuous. But I AM calling attention to values and behaviors that are getting in the way.

Candor
The unique thing about durian (the fruit) is not its hard shell that looks like the back of an ankylosaurus, or its weird pods of yellow custard that taste like nothing else on the planet. THE thing about durian is that you either love it or hate it.
My dad lived in Thailand for over 40 years, and he hated the stuff. He just couldn’t get past the wretched smell. My mom and my nanny, true lovers of durian, snuck it in from the fresh market and devoured it discreetly in our back yard.
Candor—from a Thai point of view—is the durian of all management principles touted by Netflix. Except that this time it’s the other way around. Farangs tend to love it, and Thais can’t get past the smell.

What Thais Can Learn from Netflix (Part 2)
At first glance this might look like an impossible journey.
The book No Rules Rules: Netflix and the Culture of Reinvention, by Reed Hastings and Erin Meyer, shows what a modern business innovation engine looks like. The story is inspiring but also disturbing when read from a Thai perspective. The Netflix culture of talent density, complete candor, and decentralized decision-making is so starkly different from traditional Thai organizations that it feels like a slap in the face.
In other words, there is a very high risk that any Thai reader will quickly dismiss the merits of this book as being irrelevant to Thai ways. And that would be a shame. That’s why Thais are my target audience in this series. If you’re not Thai, welcome aboard, but make sure you point your Thai colleagues to my blogs. Thanks.

Thai Values 4.0: What Thais Can Learn from Netflix (Part 1)
Why Innovation Is So Difficult
Stay tuned for more blogs that guide ex-pat business leaders in Thailand to confront their biases and work smarter—culturally smarter.
But that’s not the only thing I do. Today I pivot to address a different audience.
My new series is a heart-to-heart talk with Thais about indigenous values that can easily get in the way of their dreams for economic progress. I will be inviting Thais to look within.
If you are a Thai reading these words, you may have noticed that I have a very non-Thai name. I mention this to warn you of cultural bias that may easily ambush you and cause you to sweep my words aside. After all, what can a farang teach us about Thai culture? Who does he think he is?

Cultural Liaison For Executives
Taking your business to new regions is a key element of growth. In order to succeed, you will need a thorough understanding of the dominant culture you are entering and how it is different from your former business contexts. This is especially true if you will be leading a multicultural team. The concept is called cross-cultural management and it will allow you to lead teams in other places, engage with new vendors and partners, and empower your team to embrace the new region.

If you’re a foreigner working with Thais, remember that you are as strange to your colleagues as
they are to you. Symbols of this disconnect, like the language barrier, are as obvious as the
nose on your face. But far more obtuse are the hidden cultural codes.
‘Invisible’ friction has a habit of making itself felt at the worst possible times. Consider a project
that needs to be completed by a certain date. The timeline is tight, but you believe in your
team’s ability to deliver.

In Thailand, trust is a currency. Like everything else of genuine value, this currency takes time to accumulate. Business leaders often claim that their most valuable asset is their people. Perhaps it’s time to look beyond the urgency of the present moment and act like we mean that.
Cultural coaching is immensely beneficial to those conducting business in Asia. Ensuring the executives and managers are empowered to do business here sets the tone for their teams. An executive can only be successful if his or her team feels empowered and supported in their work environment.
This series is intended as a practical guide to better leadership for ex-pats in Thailand. For more on the cultural background of the issues I raise here see my book, The Way Thais Lead: Face as Social Capital.
