Morning everybody. Hopefully, you're having a great day. It's a great week. Today we got snow and freezing rain coming in the northeast. My anyways, today I was on with Jim Polito. And we talked about five G and a couple of other technologies. So here we go with Jim.

    Jim Polito
This guy. He's like the Santa Claus of the tech world. I'm talking about my good friend and yours. He's our Tech Talk guru, Craig Peterson. Good morning, Sir. How are you today?

    Craig Peterson
Hey, good morning. I am doing so well. It's been fun. I was at a family wedding last week. My sister in law got married. It was lovely. Today, I'm heading down to the swamp. So we'll see how that goes.

    Jim Polito
Yeah. Have fun. It is a busy time of year, and we hopefully will have a white Christmas. Soon we will have Christmas, Hanukkah, and on Monday, it is Festivus Monday. Hanukkah begins Saturday, and then we've got Christmas Wednesday. That is the trifecta of the Big Three religions in the world. I can't believe that Christmas Eve is a week from today. Isn't Canadian Christmas tomorrow?

    Craig Peterson
It was a couple of weeks ago because that's what I told my kids and so they gave me my present then. Okay. In honor. You know, my dad used to tell me that Christmas Eve was a Norwegians holiday, of course, that is why it is Peterson, right? Yeah. Norwegians would open a gift on Christmas Eve, and I'm not sure I'm going to have to ask him if that was yet another made-up holiday to keep us quiet.

    Jim Polito
No, but we used to. I mean, I know a lot of families did that. Have the kids opened a gift on Christmas Eve? And then keep them quiet. My family did. We were Italian. Everything was Christmas Eve. Christmas Day was a big meal. But that was it. All the gifts for Christmas Eve.

    Craig Peterson
    That's a great idea.

    Jim Polito
    That's it.

    Craig Peterson
We've got one of our daughter's, you know, speaking of trifectas. She's working over in Kentucky. She's one of the managers on the farm that won the Triple Crown last year. She and her daughter are coming up. my granddaughter and she's bringing a boyfriend with her, and I'm sitting here wondering what that is all about.

    Jim Polito
You better get ready for that. Hey, If you are looking to upgrade your phone - should I get one with the latest in connectivity. So should I buy a 5g phone or not.

    Craig Peterson
Today, there are some manufacturers with 5G phones. You know, we've talked about how it's going to be the big wave, it is going to change everything. You look at how we have these autonomous vehicles, more or less starting to hit the roads. Now, 5g is going to let them talk to each other, talk to the cloud, and get really up to date information. With 5G, even your Levi's trucker jacket to talk to it. Everything is going to be connected. You're going to buy a laptop, and it will come all of them with 5G built into it. It's going to be everywhere. However, the question now for those of you don't know you've got 4g on your phone. Now. 5g is the latest bit of wireless communication now.

    Jim Polito
I understand. I read an article that there's an experiment Going on the closest 5g to us right now in Massachusetts isn't there an experiment going on in Providence, Rhode Island? Aren't they getting 5g right now?

    Craig Peterson
Well, yeah, but here's the problem. It is kind of like when 4g LTE came out, and this is the data standard for your phones. It was 4g, somewhat. Now what we're seeing is in a minimal area, we're talking about a few blocks of a few downtown areas, New York City, being one of them. I do think something is going on in Providence right now. Yeah, where you're getting 5g, but you're getting what's called the wideband ultra wideband. So here's what we see right now. The Big Boy right now on the block with 5g is T Mobile.

    Jim Polito
Yeah, I think that's who's experimenting Providence. Yeah.

    Craig Peterson
Yeah. Friday, they turned on their 600 megahertz 5g network. Now, this is 5g, but it's not as fast as the ultra-wideband 5g is. It's, but it's like 100 megabits a second. That's crazy, quick. But whining, but ultimately 5g is going to be one gigabit so so here's the trick for Christmas for gift giving. Yeah, for your self. Right. Samsung has announced a couple of phones out there, the Galaxy Note 10 plus and the one plus 70. Both of those phones are on pre-order. But don't buy a 5g phone unless you have to buy a new phone right now.

    Jim Polito
That's a good piece of advice.

    Craig Peterson
Yeah. AT&T and Verizon both have some ultra wideband networks that are about a 50 megabits faster right now than T-mobile's. But they only cover a few blocks of a few downtown Areas versus t mobile's that's more or less nationwide wait into the summer of 2020. I would advise you to wait till the fall because that's when our friends at Apple are going to have their new iPhone 12. But at that point, everything will be solidified. And that's why Apple didn't come up with 5g and the iPhone 11. We're not ready yet. It is going to roll out. We're going to see upwards of a gigabit with the bandwidth, and then everything's going to change, and I'm going to be taking a much different tune.

    Jim Polito
Isn't this great. So folks, all that Fast Five G that you've heard about you just heard from Craig wants you to wait, maybe the summer maybe the fall. Now, Craig. The other question is, Why are people so upset with 5g towers? What's the is this kind of like the anti-vaccination movement? I mean, what's the problem with 5g towers, I've had 4g, 3g, all of it.

    Craig Peterson
Yeah, exactly. And it's not as though you're a dumber than you were a few years ago.

    Jim Polito
I wouldn't use that analogy. I mean, it depends upon the tool you're using to measure intelligence. But go ahead.

    Craig Peterson
Now, you know, I have an advanced class ham license from the FCC. Yes, yes. I can. I can transmit 1500 watts. Myself. Yeah. Yeah. With this fair amount of power. Yeah, yeah, exactly. And unlimited power when you get up into the light range. So doing Earthbound moon bounces and stuff. But anyway, here's the problem. People hear the word radiation, and they freak out. Yeah. When we're talking about cell towers, they radiate. They have radiation, but there is a big difference. Okay, we're talking about two different types of radiation. You have ionizing radiation, which is the dangerous stuff. That's what you get from nuclear power plants to the core of the reactor in Chernobyl. And then you have non-ionizing radiation, which is what you get from cell phones and cell phone towers. Now, the reason people are kind of getting upset about this gym is unlike 4g and prior where you have these big trees that look artificial. I know there is one on the Merritt Parkway in Connecticut. It's kind of my landmark like, oh, I'm almost at the New York line. It's one of those trees. Yeah. So I'm like that, with 5g because of the frequencies involved. There have to be upwards of 100 times as many of these transmissions right. And so there will be a lot of them. They'll be mounting them on the sides of buildings. They're much much, much smaller. But there are many, many more of them. And depending on where you live, etc., you may or may not see these bills pay you to have one on the side of your house, because it'll cover your neighbors, it'll cover your neighborhood. And this is going to be a massive blow to the cable TV companies. Because if you can get gigabit for cheap, right, you know, from whomever your provider is, it's going to make a big difference. But they've got to get out of these towers, if you will, are these really what they are 5g cell sites all over the place. So people are worried there's going to be so many of them they're going to be right next to I see that going to cause harm? And the reality is there's no real science, and I'll just kind of leave it there. But there's no real scientist that says that any of this is harmful to humans. It is non-ionizing radiation.

    Jim Polito
Yeah, exactly. Okay. Craig, this was fascinating now. Folks, you heard that. How would you like to have access to this man all the time? Here's what you do. You text him my name, Jim, to this number 855-385-5553. Just text Jim to 855-385-5553 standard data and text rates apply, Craig will provide you with information regularly the same information he gives to me. Plus, if there's a crisis, a data breach, or theft, he will update you with all the information you need to know he's not going to try to sell you anything, and he's not going to charge you anything. Craig, fantastic segment, and we look forward to talking with you on Christmas Eve.

    Craig Peterson
    All right. Take care, gentlemen.

    Jim Polito
All right. We'll be right back that was a great segment, Danny. Now I understand. 5g and everything else. And I don't need it right now. But man, that's going to be great when you have that kind of signal and power that's going to be great. And just to see the difference that we went from even 3g to 4g yeah difference from 4g to 5g is even bigger than that. What a leap. All right, don't go anywhere. We have a final word. When we return. You're listening to the Jim Pulido show your safe space.

Hey, good morning, everybody. Craig Peterson here. I was on Mr. Jackie this morning. And I had some ideas I think some great ideas for gifts for the tech people in your life and a little bit of a warning although there are companies with 5g phones out there. Hey, it isn't to what you might think it is. At least not yet. So here we go with Mr. Heath. Out in a moment but on the Tech Talk side our own Craig Peterson ways in this Monday morning. Good morning, Craig. Hey, good morning, jack. What a great time of year I'm just so excited. We got all of our shopping done before December even showed its face. The first time, I'm usually one of those guys like Justin, and I was just conversing about it. But bottom line, you know, it's December 24, 3 pm is time to start the shopping. But this year, I'm all ready for it.

    Jack Heath
Well, you have a football team to buy stuff for how many?

    Craig Peterson
Yeah, but we only have eight kids and five, and I began to like, one little gift per and say, you're lucky you get it. No, I'm kidding. I'm kidding. Well, I got a little bit of gift advice here, jack for people. We keep hearing about the 5g networks. Of course, you and I've talked about a little bit as well, and these are the new data networks for our smart devices are smartphones, even frankly, laptops going to be coming with 5g, and it's going to be just a whole world changer. But I want people to kind of stop just for a second. When you are looking to buy some more than upgraded phone a smartphone this year. And you're thinking about 5g. There are companies out there like, for instance, T-Mobile has its nationwide 5g that just launched on Friday. And it's going to be the most significant network at least right now. None of these 5g networks are really in place yet. They're not working well. T-mobile's is starting, and at at&t and Verizon are beginning, but it's only going to work in the real big cities. So a little quick word of caution. Don't go out buying a new smartphone that has five g in it. For instance, right now, Samsung is taking orders for two new phones and the latest Samsung Galaxy Note 10 plus and the one plus 70. Those phones Yeah, they'll be good enough. But 5g isn't going to hit until next Christmas. Apple's going to have their new 5g phone out next September. All of the major carriers will have some decent rollout by then. But frankly, I would not look at 5g quite yet. When I was getting if I was getting a phone, I still have an iPhone eight. I have not upgraded, and I don't plan on upgrading until the iPhone 12 comes out. If you've got a friend or family member who's and you're still looking for that cool toy for that tech person. Well, I got something that isn't a toy. It is kind of the replacement for those thumb drives that we've carried around for so long. The company that's made a lot of this portable storage like thumb drives is called SanDisk, S-A-N D-I-S-K. SanDisk has their new extreme portable SS D. This thing is fantastic. It can hold up to two terabytes depending on which version you get. You can clip it onto a backpack, you can put it, even in a pocket or in your purse, and it allows you to keep everything with you. So I'm the kind of guy who likes to back up my backups. So when I'm out shooting pictures at a family event, I was just at a wedding last week, a family wedding. I like to have multiple copies of them. Look at this Portable SSD. It's an excellent option for a gift. And if you have somebody that is totally into tech, really likes to make things and design things. There's something called a Raspberry Pi. Now I've been playing with these things for years, and the Raspberry Pi four is out. It is a computer that will fit in. To call it that. Exactly. It doesn't sound appetizing, and it fits in the palm of your hand jack, it is a computer, and USB-C cable powers it. And for those people in your life who are real techies who like to make and design things that are computer-controlled. It is an extraordinary gift, and you can get these starter kits for less than 100 bucks. And it comes with everything that you'd want. So those are the two big things I'd look at anything and if you got somebody wants to take things apart, jack, look at that. I fix it. That's the name of the company. I set it pro tech tool kit. I love this thing, and I use them all the time because when I go to a wedding Or I go to a family event. The first thing they do jack is they pull out the computer and say, Hey, Craig, can you fix this for me? So have a look at those gift ideas I think for the tech people in your life.

    Jack Heath
All right. All right. Quickly to Sonic course Justin still looking for those last-minute video games, right? He's a gamer.

    Craig Peterson
Yeah, there's some cool on, sir. Yeah. All right. The Video Game process is kind of year-round, jack. It's not. There's no last minute.

    Jack Heath
    All right, great. Thank you.

    Craig Peterson
    Thanks so much. All right.

    Craig Peterson
Hey, everybody, hope you're having a great week and getting ready for all of the celebrations here at the end of the year. Of course, we have Christmas coming up Hanukkah and Festivus. So I'm not sure those are all on par with each other. But anyway, I just hope you have a great, great end of the year. I had a wonderful time out at my sister in law's wedding last week. It was one Wonderful, and it's kind of cool to see another culture and all of the things involved with her marriage, and we're glad to be able to participate. Everybody have a great day. I will be back on the morrow. I'm going to be doing a little traveling here over the next couple of weeks business, you know, you're in a way that stuff sometimes plays out until I might be a little spotty here with some of these podcasts. But yeah, I'll be back full force at the beginning of the year. Take care, everybody. Talk to you later. Bye-bye.

    Matt Gagnon
And now we have Craig Peterson. Craig, are you here?

    Craig Peterson
Hey, good morning! I am here

    Ken Altschuler
Thank you for joining us. And by the way, I should mention that you will also be heard on WGAN on Saturday at one o'clock.

    Matt Gagnon
    Nicely done, Sir.

    Ken Altschuler
Thank you. 18 years. I don't know if you know that. Hey Craig, I did not realize there was such a thing as cyber insurance. Can you tell us about that? Is it something we should be buying?

    Craig Peterson
Yeah, this is a big deal with some businesses may be aware of homeowners, etc. Or you might want to listen here for a minute because first of all, many homeowner policies have already got his cyber insurance clause in them. And so if you have homeowners policies, double-check on that if you know for your personal computers, see if you have it, maybe it's a writer you might want to add to it, but a lot of them do. But the cyber attacks increasing now. Businesses have to pay a lot more to this whole cybersecurity risk, we have quite a few companies now that have cyber insurance, but it's not even half of them so far. So this is a very, very big deal. Make sure you have it, but also remember that not all cyber insurance claims are paid. If you are not taking reasonable efforts, which have, you know, have you defined those to try and keep the bad guys out, they may not pay. Even the big guys like Merck, the drugmaker, and the American food processor, Mondelez. They are both suing their insurance providers because the insurance providers did not pay for damages from a big virus called not pet shop back two years ago. So this is a big deal. It could save you could help your business. And just a word of warning. Those businesses that do get cyber attacked about 20% percent of them filed for bankruptcy the very next day. So be very, very careful if everybody can I do think cyber insurance is a good thing for every business and including in particularly regulated companies, like your law practice and, and many of the other companies here in Maine.

    Matt Gagnon
We're talking to Craig Peterson. He is our tech guru, and he joins us now to talk about what's happening in the world of technology. Greg, you're spooked, you're freaked out by facial recognition you want out? You don't want to be facially recognized. What can I do to do the same thing, and why are you so hesitant about it?

    Craig Peterson
Well, you know, we talked before a little bit about what Homeland Security is doing with facial recognition and how they have some of these cameras right now with gates at airports, they've been arresting people who approach the gate at the airport. Their face does not match the on the identification that they presented. So we expect more and more that as time goes on, but I get concerned about it because of it right now guys if you get notified that for instance, that a hack happened to a site that you use, you can go and change your password. Right? You probably have done that already.

    Matt Gagnon
    Yes.

    Craig Peterson
Yeah. So changing your password is an easy thing. Think about this. Some buildings and businesses and require IDs to gain entrance to get in to get through the doors?

    Ken Altschuler
Not so much anymore. But I did use to have to do that quite a bit when I worked on Capitol Hill.

    Craig Peterson
Exactly. You get into the bigger cities down into Boston or New York, and you're going to see that all the time. And so businesses, many of them were trying to have some physical security. And so they'll give you these cards, or there might be swipe cards, etc. And you come up to the little gate, you use the passcard, the gate opens, and you go, well, it's part of the problem. They are offering facial recognition. Even for those types of admittances. So all you do is you walk right through the gates, the computer recognizes you based on your face. And here all set. What happens when they steal your face data? Remember, the movie Face-Off, and you might remember seeing this

    Matt Gagnon
Face Off. It's one of my favorite movies of all time.

    Craig Peterson
So, you know, it's an excellent movie. So both of those guys may be able to do a little face trick, but we can't. What do we do when they steal our face data? And real between us? Frankly, that's one of the big problems I have with the REAL guys are talking about that a little earlier here on the news. But Cal main has this Real ID-compliant identification. Well, it's one thing for the federal government to have all of our faith and maybe some other biometrics for passport, and hopefully, they'll take care of the data. We've got 50 states of are we sure the state of Maine isn't going to lose that information. And I get concerned about this. So I opt out of it every time I potentially can. And if the business that I work at it says hey listen, guys, you have this optional facial recognition. Instead of that card. I would go for the card every time.

    Ken Altschuler
We are talking to Craig Peters son joins us every Wednesday at 730 and also, by the way, WGAN on one at one o'clock on Saturday, I have a couple of dogs that we live in the house. And you know, sometimes I worry that maybe they're going to rip up a pillow or use the facility inside instead of out so way that I can serve them.

    Craig Peterson
Some people might pass but there there are a lot of really cool things. There are pet shaders and waters that have cameras built-in And this is part of the Internet of Things. So make sure you segment your network, okay? Just get a little techie here on people, because you don't want those remote cameras to be able to be used as a launching point to attack the rest of your networks. But there's a cool new one out right now that I wanted to mention. And it's called Ebo, and you can find it on Kickstarter right now, Ebo.com. It is a little robot that live-streams HD video of it. It is really for cats. It's a little ball basically with a couple of wheels on the bottom, and it comes out and plays with your pet. It has a laser in it, and it shoots a laser around for the pet to kind of chase it runs around and back and forth and plays your dog, or your cat has to chase it around. You can even with a collar that Ebo has, also track your pet steps. It has a series of light and sounds, and you talk to your pet.

    Matt Gagnon
I think this might be over the top, but if you love your pets, wouldn't you buy them something like this? Yes. Yes, yes.

    Craig Peterson
Good. Yeah. I was going to say, and I'll tell you I have a great dane and just one chomp, and it's gone.

    Matt Gagnon
Indeed. Alright. Well, ladies and gentlemen. We're talking to Craig Peterson, our tech guru, and he joins us right now to talk about technology updates. Craig, one quick question for you before we let you go. I should be terrified of my smart TV, true or false.

    Craig Peterson
You know, we certainly have been concerned about all kinds of Internet of Things devices. Remember that our TV use that you bought here recently has built into a computer. And the FBI now is warning us about smart TVs and how it opens up security vulnerabilities. So here's what I been doing. I got a smartTV. One of my daughters gave it to me for Canadian Christmas, which I've told my children is like three weeks before the real Christmas, you see. So they've already given me the TV, and I've got it up on the wall, and it's a smart TV. I hooked it up to the internet long enough for it to go and get updates. Then I went to the software update screen, and then I had it forget the web so it could not connect anymore. I use an external box for all of my Roku type of You know, an Apple TV box. For all of my streaming services, like Netflix or Hulu or whatever. I found it at Walmart for 180 bucks the other day, Apple TV. I know I've said this many times about Apple, they are the only one trying to do security-first. Do not use a smartTV. Some TVs, many of them now and I think most of them have cameras in them. And many of them are watching you watching TV. They have third party programs and apps that contain vulnerabilities, which makes them hackable, many of these remotely, and if you're not keeping the software up to date, you've got problems. But the more significant issue is that even if you try to keep the software update, the vendors are not updating these TVs. So the FBI has been warning us the types of smart TVs are They're dangerous little hacks right now or rare, but that doesn't mean that can continue to be. So do not connect the TV to the internet. The internet is my advice, but use an external box for all services.

    Craig
Good morning, everybody. Craig Peterson here. I had a fun time this morning, Alicia Preston, and I actually she has a married name, but she still goes by Alicia Preston. We've been on TV together before she was a prominent TV host for a long time. And now she is doing other things. But this morning, Alicia was sitting in for Jackie. And he Jeff, she and I had a lot of fun. I had a lot of fun talking a little bit about some of the technology and Justin McIsaac, of course, he jumped in. If that names familiar, and what reminded me of that when I said he jumped in, You might understand because Justin used to be a professional wrestler, which is funny. Very, very, very, very left-wing guy, but Great guy, you can discuss with him, right? He's not one of these people that just totally blocked you out. It's like the old days where you could have a political discussion. Anyways, we talked about a couple of tech things, what's going on new warnings from the FBI and security at the airports and a couple of others. It was a fun morning. I hope everything's going well with you guys. Take care. Here we go with Alicia.

    Alicia Preston
Joining us. Now we have Craig Peterson. He is going to help us with some tech talk this morning, Craig, how are you?

    Craig Peterson
Hey, good morning, Alicia. I am doing really, well.

    Alicia Preston
So there's some surprising stuff in the news where that I would call creepy. It concerns some facial recognition programs at a company. What is up with this?

    Craig Peterson
Yeah, there's so much going on right now. When you start looking into all of the details behind it, it gets frankly, even scarier. Right now, facial recognition is in our kind of all over the place. We know the Department of Homeland Security is, but these facial recognition cameras in at some of the airports, in fact, right at the gate. So far they've arrested them probably about 12,000. People who, when they approach the gate, the DHS Homeland Security goes ahead and double-checks to see if the facial recognition data that they have on file for them matches who is approaching the gate, right. In other words, it makes sure you are who you say you are, while those here illegally and previously arrested get stopped at those gates. But we're seeing that more and more of a lot of the more prominent buildings in Boston and New York City require you to have an idea of paths of some sort that you might swipe for instance, when you open when you go into that building, a lot of businesses have those types of cards to keep safe. Now they're moving more and more towards Hey. We'll give you the option here that you can use facial recognition. So, they'll take a picture of your face, and when you approach that little turnstile, the computer recognizes you and just let you go through. The problem with this type of biometric data, Alicia, mainly when we're talking about our faces and has to do with data theft. You know you can change your password when it gets stolen. You cannot change your face. And that gets to be such a huge, huge problem, I think for everybody.

    Alicia Preston
Well, with this facial recognition, you know, this seems that 20 years ago would have been a futuristic movie we all would have opposed.

    Craig Peterson
I was going to say there was a movie about this with Nicolas Cage and John Travolta called Face Off.

    Justin McIssac
That could change your face, right, Craig?

    Alicia Preston
That was a scary, scary movie.

    Craig Peterson
Scary, back in the day, and now we've got the FBI coming out guys. The FBI is warning about that smart TV you bought on Black Friday. What they're saying now is that in these new Smart TVs, security is almost non-existent. Now on my show on Saturday, I was talking about what's happening compared t iPhones. For instance, like the most popular iPhone out there by Samsung to an apple, I mean iPhone, I mean, Android phone to an iPhone. And what we're finding now is that the Android phones are coming pre-shipped with about 120 backdoors installed ways for hackers to get in not backdoors is not quite the right term, but methods for hackers to get right in right when you buy it right when it's new. And Samsung takes about five to six months to provide updates on the latest phone attempts on has security updates. And then on top of it, they only support the phone for two years. It's crazy. And the security is so bad in Android versus Apple, where it's available the next day after they released the fixes. You know, it's just crazy. Most Android phones don't even get security updates. When was the last time you updated the software on your internet-connected smart TV? These TVs have built-in cameras that watch you recognizing the faces of the people in the room and identifies that you're looking at the TV or not. These units come with a full Android computer onboard, and because of that, they act as launchpads to attack everything in our home network.
