Here he is folks, the man with the plan, the Tech Talk guru. He's got it all covered. Our friend Craig Peterson. Good morning, Craig.
Hey, good morning, Jim. How are you today, buddy? I'm doing great. I enjoyed your Veterans Day show yesterday, by the way, for taking the time.
Yeah, a lot of people calling in.
I have two kids who were in the military as well in the Navy and my father in law. He was on a submarine in Hawaii, right there when the Japanese started shelling Pearl Harbor. My father in law passed many years ago. But, you know, we've all been touched by this, whether it's a more recent conflict or the older ones, so thanks to everybody. Sorry, I couldn't say anything yesterday.
No, but Craig, thank you. I really, I really appreciate that. And I appreciate the service of all. And really, it's, we can't do anything else and no need to thank us because it's Veterans Day, you do that.
So let me let me let you in on a secret here. There's the social media app TikTok. And I guess it's for the younger kids, like they all start being for younger kids, and then we take over the baby boomers, so like with Instagram and Facebook and all of that, so I joined TikTok, only so I could get the name, Jim Polito, you know on it like, and maybe someday. young folks will be using it who are my age or others but TikTok has some very serious issues surrounding it. Kind of a lot of controversy, right?
Yeah, it absolutely does. And what we're talking about here is an app spelled TIKTOK T-I-K-T-O-K. And it is very popular. It uses little videos that as you mentioned, it's mainly kids are using 15 seconds that allows you to put music on them. You can do some really fancy little video where you can and even Tom Brady who apparently Oh, yeah, Gronkowski. I'm sorry, Brady. Correct me here.
Yeah, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So even though he's using it now. So I don't maybe it's already started to transition to older people like those celebrities. Like Will Smith on it all the time, you know and he's up there in age but he's trying to appeal to younger people so he wants to be there on that platform.
Yeah, he has a very cute little video in fact about TikTok and kind of getting pulled into it. And it's a lot of fun. A lot of people are doing that, you know, kind of like the old SnapChats and old its children use this very popular, but within the last two years, TikTok is really gained a lot of notoriety and a lot of popularity. However, it is owned by a company called ByteDance, which is a Chinese owned company which is the reason for the controversy.
There we go. Okay, now I get it.
A Congressional Committee called the Committee on Foreign investment in the United States. And they review for acquisitions of US businesses that could threaten national security. I don't know how Will Smith nows fear, national security. But when you get right down to it even if you take a photograph and you post it online on a website or a blog, etc. Remember nowadays that photograph has built right into it. GPS coordinates of where it was taken, what the picture that was that you took what it was about now using visual recognition software. And there's been some amazing things done so for instance, over in France, Notre Dame, the cathedral, Of course, burned down.
Yeah.
And that they're trying to figure out okay, so how can we rebuild it? What should we do? Should we stay true with what it was? They ended up taking the photographs that people had just posted online, just you know, hey, look at me, I'm on vacation at Notre Dame in Paris. And they were able to come completely stitch them together. So every inch of that Cathedral that was visible by these cameras, that was stitched together and they had a whole three-dimensional view of it.
Wow.
Now, they've done that with some other things before for instance, over in Iraq and, and other places in the Middle East with some of these thousand 2000 even older monuments are over there, those buildings that were destroyed by the Taliban. Again they were able to take the pictures that people had taken and posted online so and reconstruct the things visually. Technology has made that possible to do quite easily now, and that's part of the reason, Jim, why they say you know, you cannot take pictures in New York City inside of certain areas that are considered to be security threats. Because our enemies can go stitch them together and have a very detailed visual picture of everything with GPS coordinates that get them right down to the last yard. Right? That you're taking in, you know the meter. So with things like TikTok that are in control under control of the Chinese government, and of course, their socialist government is
exactly, you know,
Do we want them to have that kind of information that could be embedded in the videos or taking, maybe even in some cases tracking us when we're not using the application or writing videos, but now they've got more information on us here in the US.
It's a similar problem, of you, know when IBM sold Lenovo to China, I freaked out because here Lenovo is a company that makes laptops Some people love them the birth of laptops. But now they have a company which doesn't mean just the hardware. But they've got the names and addresses and phone numbers of everyone, including people in government NSA security risk. So let's think about our deployed soldiers. You know, you and I have talked a little bit about the Fitbit. And our soldiers are using these Fitbit when they run around our military bases overseas as well as here in the US. And they are uploading the information from the Fitbit to the internet so they can compete with each other right and have some fun.
Well, Jim, they put together heat maps using the Fitbit information, and you were able to go online and find our secret military bases.
Not good.
So we've gotten Soldiers using TikTok to talk to their friends back home. We've got people here doing the same thing. And we are leaking all kinds of information everywhere, really might not want to show and now the Feds are getting involved. They're going to look at this more. they may halt some sales of some of this technology.
But previously they this is what it's called that committee in the government here. They focused on companies with military intellectual concerns. Right. But now, this has triggered investigation of TikTok.
Yeah, I mean, the thing is, we're talking with Craig Peterson, our tech Talk Guru, the thing is, Craig, in the past, the stuff that people posted, legitimately and openly online on a social media platform, you know, you could I guess mine, you could go in and search and look for, but to actually control the platform. On the platform, you know, isn't that like the same issue we had with them selling us electronics and we find out all these electronics are constructed or assembled with a back door that the Chinese can use?
Yeah. And who knows what's in it right when these back doors are already existing in our security cameras that we put in, in not only businesses, but it turns out on our military bases, 90 plus percent of them are made in China, even if it's a US brand. And they have back doors. And I've been in small businesses where those cameras security cameras made in China have been used to break into the point of sale equipment to steal credit card and banking info.
Oh, boy. Yeah. See, that's just not good.
Right. Yeah. And so that's what we're looking at here. And then frankly, this is a real problem.
All right, Craig, where can folks get more information on this? I imagine if they text my name to this number
855-385-5563. So just text Jim to 855-385-5563.
All right, standard data and tax rates apply. You'll get all of this fascinating information, plus more from Craig and you won't have to worry about Craig, treating your data like the Chinese would, the Chinese Communist. Craig, thanks so much. We'll talk to you next week.
All right, thanks. Take care, Jim.

Good morning, everybody. Craig Peterson here. I am still out at a conference back a little bit later on this morning. But I did call into Jack's show this morning. We talked a little bit about veterans and some job opportunities for them. So here we go with Jack Heath.
All right. Joining us now, Craig Peterson before we bring in Dr. Jill Biden live. A couple of updates on the Tech Talk side of things. Good morning, Craig.
Hey, good morning, Jack. We got a couple of things going on here when it comes to veterans and technology. I want to point out first of all that people might not be aware of it. But it said that half of our country's World War Two veterans became entrepreneurs, many Vietnam vets have as well as golf. That's nowadays, and many of them are not only starting businesses but are going into security careers, which I think is a wonderful thing is we're starting to see about 40% of the security people right now out there, the cybersecurity guys and gals are unsatisfied. They're looking for new jobs. So if you're a veteran, and you're out there looking for what should I do, what can I do? And we'll have a look at cybersecurity. We've got one and a half million open jobs is got some of our listeners, including DE who is out there right now he just over 50 years old, we won't say exactly how old he is. But he's changed careers, but salute to all of our veterans and thanks for everything that you guys and gals have done.
Well, that's a pretty positive outlook on a lot of opportunities for veterans. And that's a neat take on it. What else you have coming up?
Well, we've got kicked out there, which is the app that most of our kids are using, yeah. TikTok. And it's being considered right now as a national security threat. Because so many people including Gronkowski, have been using it and promoting it. owned by a Chinese firm. And there you are concerned that some of the information that's gathered by this app, which includes your location, potentially things that you're saying, of course, and videos that you're shooting, giving information to them about all just basically all kinds of things we talked about. So if your kids are using TikTok or if you're using it, you really might want to think twice about that.
Well, it's interesting, you know, you hear different things, but I guess we'll even what's the story with Apple right now, so but privacy issues could backfire with developers. Go ahead, Craig.
Okay. Yeah. There's a lot of things going on right now when it comes to privacy. Apple has been really trying to tighten things up. Google is actually been loosening some things up. But yeah, there are privacy concerns. Just Generally, frankly, if you're going to be using smartphones and some of these other devices, be very, very careful about what you buy. If you want privacy, if you want security, Apple's a good way to go.
But we also have had for the last 50 years, really, since encryption has been available on things like our computers, we've had concerns by the government saying we've got to have back doors, we've got to be able to get into everybody's communications if we need to. And once again, how we have the government getting their fingers into this whole thing. Apple and Facebook have been pushing back in a very big way. We'll see what happens. But this thing really started full steam during the Clinton administration.
Just to give you an idea of how long frankly, it's been.
All right, Greg, what are you up to all those factors day?
Well, I'm actually holding the conference out west in Arizona, so I'm gonna miss the weather back home.
Just a little chilly midweek and they're making it a making it quite a big deal nationally but we have some teams overnight on Wednesday and Thursday night. And of course, the North coaches loving this because we're getting a jump on the ski and snow season. Thank you very much Craig Peterson Craig peterson.com. Thank you, Craig, with the Tech Talk update.
Hey, thanks, Jack. Bye-bye.
Justin. So do you worry like Craig always talks about all the different

Good morning everybody!
I was on with Matt and Eric Lusk who was subbing for Ken. We talked about browsers and privacy. Firefox is taking the stance that privacy is where they need to concentrate their advanced efforts and updates. That is great news for everyone. We also hit Passwords and Password Managers and why you should use one and 5G and the internet of things.
I am out in Phoenix at a big conference and will have some big announcements after I return that will help every one of you to cyber secure your life.

Good morning, everybody. Craig Peterson here. I was on this morning over on WGAN in Maine on their am FM stations and talked a little bit with Eric, who was in for Ken this morning, Eric and Matt, about browsers what you should be looking for. Firefox has a new claim that we talked about this morning, I gave some advice on the thing, you need to download the one plugin that you must put on all of your browsers, and where to get that. And Eric asked a little bit about 5g and how it's going to change his life. So, of course, we got into that as well. So here we go with Eric and Matt.
Well, ladies, gentlemen, it is that time of the day and that time of the week again, because 738 on a Wednesday, and that means that it's time to talk to Mr. Peterson. Craig Peterson, our tech guru joins us now Craig, How are you this morning?
Hey, I am enjoying the conversations this morning between you two. This is quite a time we live in. It is quite a time ladies and gentlemen that we live in certainly the day after the election in Portland which made Matt a happy man. is a great day. Yes, indeed. So, let's start off in the world of technology, sir, by telling me something that has been beguiling me for some time. Firefox, so so there's privacy protections that make website trackers visible here and I and I used to be a Firefox guy, I guess is where I'm asking this question. And I switched off what like the rest of America to Chrome ages and ages and ages ago and I never switched back. But I've heard good things sort of in recent times about Firefox sort of being worth it again. What do you what? Generally speaking your take on all this?
Okay, well, I did a pop-up training about different browsers. And in this day and age, something worth talking about. Microsoft, of course, had their internet explorer, aka Internet Explorer, bum, bum bum, a really poorly designed and implemented browser that didn't work on many websites out there. And what really kind of got Microsoft to pull up his socks was what you were just talking about, which is the Chrome browser out of Google. So Microsoft realized Internet Explorer was not worth it's salt. So they went ahead and they replaced it with another browser that they had created. Internet Explorer was actually created by Paul de and, and TSA. And they took the code so I won't go into all the details. But now Microsoft's newest web browser is actually Google Chrome. And it's rebadged. It's using something called chromium, which is the basis for Google Chrome. So Microsoft has switched over to Google Chrome many people So Matt, you're not left alone. I'm sure Eric uses Chrome as well. I use it from time to time I use Google Chrome if I try to use the Microsoft Internet Explorer, the 8 gigabytes of ram just grinds to close. Right? It explodes. Hence the name Internet exploder. Your question about Firefox is really quite opportune because there are two worlds there are three browsers out there that really keep privacy in mind. Now, you might have noticed over the last two, there are a lot of plugins designed to block ads, etc. Google removed the ability to block at an in certain cases, they removed it from Chrome now, because of course, they make their money through advertising can't blame on the guys over at Firefox have decided they're going to make privacy there. No Bro one thing for Firefox, and their latest version, which is verse 70, settles, the Firefox browser has a lot of privacy protection built-in. So I like it. I like it a lot. And I'm going to give you guys a little plugin you can put into your browser that's going to help no matter what browser use. The other two privacy browsers out there are opera. And there are rumors that opera has now got some Chinese connections, I have not been able to verify that. But opera by far, very, very privacy-related much more so than then Chrome is. And then the most private browser is called epic epi C. And the epic browser is also based on Chrome and chromium. So it has a lot of that same functionality, but it blocks pretty much everything and cookies. Now here's what I want everybody to write down. If you're using Chrome or Firefox or anything, something called Privacy Badger. And its Privacy Badger BADGR. Just like that nasty little road and to cleanse around from the Electronic Frontier Foundation. Privacy Badger is available as a plugin for almost any browser out there. And it watches where you're going. And it looks for trackers on the website. And it automatically learns which trackers it thinks should be blocked. And it is the least intrusive that I have ever seen for keeping your privacy. Privacy Badger. Epic might not work with some websites, Firefox and Opera work pretty much with all websites, but you can add Privacy Badger to both of those. So what do I recommend? If you really want the ultimate and private use? Epic. There is something even more private called the Tor Browser but then it gets complex. But use epic. If you want good privacy use Firefox, I would say I use opera a lot. And in any case, even if you're using Chrome, get the Privacy Badger. It's free. It's easy to download and install it on your browser.
All right, we're talking to Craig Peterson, our tech guru. He joins us every once in a while, Wednesdays at 738. By, by and large, to talk about what is happening in the world of technology. Craig, tell me a little bit about one password. What is it and why is it changing things for some enterprises?
Well, one password is what I use it because allows me and my teams to be able to share certain information, one password to keep passwords and logins for, generate passwords. But it also allows you to apply it and so as a family, Husband, and wife can share bank account information with it in business enterprises. Because now with allows them to have team so you might have a team of people to work or even just a few people that are working on the website, for instance, so they can all formation and then if someone leaves a team, you can instantly remove their access to the passwords and have someone go through and change all the passwords. So one password businesses what we're talking about here, they've got advanced protection mode, as well as all kinds of monitoring tools that let you know if a website is being compromised, and it helps take care of the biggest threat to security for most organizations, and that the people with absolute phenomenal employees all kinds of factual information in their hands and sometimes it gets lost. So one password has some holes and some key levels. recommend to anyone in the business. And both guys, Matt and Eric, you should be using one password, because it really helps you keep all of your accounts all of your logins safe. And remember, I told you that you should lie to your bank. When it comes to rolling password recovery questions. One password keeps up straight for you. Because you should be making up the answers to which high school did you attend? was your first date you know those questions? Make up the answers use one password to store them securely so that if you do need to use the password recovery stuff, you've got the right information, which is the wrong information, right? Because you're just totally made it up out of thin air for the eventuality that the websites going to be compromised and to stop the bad guys from getting the answers to your password caliber security questions.
Craig, and see if I can get in one quick question. How is 5g going to change my life compared to 4g technology? Did you
just say that? That was a quick question?
I got two minutes here. Here's the bottom line, Eric 5g is going to change everybody's life. Because first of all, Data Access is going to be way faster than it is right now ultimately when it rolls out, but it's going to be cheaper. And 5g is designed to handle billions of simultaneous connections. What that means is everything that can have activity is going to happen. Now, for instance, your Tesla, two parts in the garage connects via the internet, the Tesla,
of course, I plug it in every night.
Yeah, exactly. And when you plug it in, and it connects to the home Wi-Fi network, it updates that software automatically. It's 5g. Eric, what's going to happen is everything's going to be internet-connected, your glasses are going to be internet-connected. Because it's so inexpensive, so easy. And it's designed to have so many devices connected, which opens up, of course, a number of worms when you're talking about the things because it will make the internet of things I'm talking about. Anchor, you're going to keep track of how far you walk that morning and everything is going to be online, Greg.
If I could just find my five-year-old sneakers every morning. I would be happy if I could just find them.
Yeah, there's probably going to be an app for that.
Yeah, exactly. There will.
Alright, well, Craig Peterson, our tech guru joins us on Wednesdays at this time to go over what's happening in the world of technology. thank you as always, always a pleasure and we will talk again next week.
By the way 1 pm on Saturday.
By the way, 1 pm on Saturday, every Saturday, Craig has a show right here on WGAN. And thanks a lot, Craig. Appreciate it. And good luck with the show this weekend. Thanks. All right, so why don't we take a quick moment here and toss it back over the news.
Hi, guys, hey, I'm out at a conference. And I'm going to be here for well about another week, actually. And I just want you to keep your head up.

Good morning, everybody. Craig Peterson here. I was on this morning with Mr. Jim Polito, even though I was on the road, and we talked about what turns out to be one of the top questions I get, and I gave some, I think real solutions to everybody. And I hope, by the way, you guys enjoyed the pop-up training that I had last week. I've been doing these on both VPN and mobile devices. There's a lot more training coming up and some classes and courses and, it's really the time to learn because we've got to take care of these security problems we all seem to have. Anyhow, here we go with Mr. Polito,
Man. He's on top of it all for us joining us. Real Canadian who isn't bothered by the cold? Craig Peterson. Good morning, Craig.
Good morning, Jimmy. I'll answer the question. Yes. The economy is better than it was.
Because you deal with businesses. course you're always busy. Yeah, the new. The new normal was supposed to be less than 2% growth every year.
Yeah. Yeah, yeah. Things are great. You know, I held a pop up-training last week gym for people. And it was just amazing. I would say three-quarters of the people on the call, of course, are talking about security and VPN, mobile devices, everything. Three-quarters of the people on the call were business people whose businesses were
phenomenal.
You don't have to, you don't have to convince me. I get it. They are growing. All right. And as a business grows, the opportunity for the hackers grows now. You see some interesting material here and folks at the end of this segment will tell you how you can get this material from Craig yourself and be one of his buddies and get information in a timely fashion. But complex versus length of passwords password. It almost sounds like chicken or egg. It almost sounds like heredity or environment. It sounds like an age-old debate. So what's better a long password that I'll never remember, or a complex password that I'll never remember?
Either way, right?
It kind of dies. Here's the whole thinking on this password thing has changed over the last two years or five years really used to be only you need to have uppercase, lowercase numbers, special character symbols, and everything. And that was kind of back in the day. Now the problem is if you have an eight-character password, which is awesome. Yeah, yeah. And a pair character password with every wrench and character, everything you can think of this busy random eyes can be cracked in less than seven minutes. You mean a supercomputer can basically do it now compete with GPUs. So the graphics cards that you have in your computers now, yeah, I've been harnessed to crack passwords. It's just incredible. And if you look at some of the older passwords are the ones prior to the latest versions of Windows 10. Those can be cracked in a matter of 30 seconds for windows passwords. Now if you have upgraded to the latest versions of Windows 10 on Windows, and you have reset your password, it takes longer to crack but most people just upgrade and keep you know they don't buy They're changing, right? And they cracked in 30 seconds. It's crazy.
I am. I hate to admit to you, but you know, it's kind of like going to the dentist and saying, Yeah, I know I don't brush before I go to bed. It's basically what I'm doing now was telling you Yeah, Craig, I don't brush before I go to bed.
Sorry. Here's the trick now with a link is the important part of a password. And you don't need to have upper and lowercase characters or numbers or symbols. Because now it's your computing power. It's just so available that it's your computing power. So if you can get your, your passcodes up to 12 characters console from seven minutes to crack Jim up to a century.
All right, okay, well, I'm not gonna be around at 100 years, so that would be good. So Amen. So it seems to me like exponentially it increases. So what do I need? 12 characters need a minimum of props on my iPhone. I have a 12 digit basketball. Oh my god, I just
I just added the one I upgraded to the six when I got my new phone because I had to. Yeah, I'm on the I'm on the six. Oh god. Yeah.
I'm never gonna remember 12.
Six is way better than four. Let me tell you.
Totally. Here's a trick for everybody. First of all, just come up with a passphrase because on your iPhone and your Android computers. You don't have to use get that you can use a frame right? about something that that that that's kind of unique to you. That you can remember Jim
Jim,
Jim, I want to give you a website, everybody a website here to check out. It's called have you been PWNED. Now Pawned dispelled PWNED but you can just search for porn. And you can put your email address and to that website and it'll tell you about all the places your username, email and password show up on the dark web.
And it has a password section you'll see a tab at the top, you just click passwords and type in the password you think you want to use and it'll tell you if it's this great as Jim is a blowhard when it comes to passwords, okay?
Right now hold on a second. Okay.
A note I'm putting in my email oh no PWNED in to breach sites and found no pastes. What does that mean?
What that means it'll tell you what site your password using respond on. In other words, those sites are where they knew about you and the site was broken into, and they were able to grab all of your information. Now the pastes are, there's a site out there called paste band, and that's used by a lot of hackers. Share passwords, usernames, emails, Stop. So they're just telling you that they haven't found the check the pace. I couldn't find it anywhere on page sites. You are you have been part of two branches that they know.
Okay, well, we know about that because I think we talked about them and I'm trying to think of what it was. Who it was it a retailer, that was breached. I'm trying to think of where that was. Okay, so, so at least I didn't get pasted somewhere where people said, All right, let's take this and sell it or use it.
Yeah, exactly. And by the way, I've been giving a top reaches Ok. So there are many others that maybe haven't been
taught. We don't.
Yeah, that we don't talk about exactly. So it is free for anybody. When you're talking about the password, if you come up with one, click on the passwords tab at the top, and type the password in you think you want to use and it'll tell you if it's a common enough password. You shouldn't use it. And here's why. The bad guys have a list of over a billion passwords that people typically use, you know, you have the standard ones like password, which is there all, but it has all these articles that have been breached. So it'll tell you, hey, you off on someone else use that password before, because what the balls of the ball too, is they just try these passwords these billion passwords against your account when they get when they hack into a website. Let's say passwords are encrypted. And so they try and pick your password to figure out do your possible so they can now log into the
ability to run it all. They're able to run it all and do it so I guess I should get rid of the password as my password right? Yes, nobody wouldn't. Nobody would think of that. Craig.
I came up with it. I said to my wife, isn't it? I got the best password. It's PASSWORD. It was like we had the conversation of Abbott and Costello who's on first? All right. So how do people get this information from you, Craig? They want they text My name to what number
285 55. And I'll send you my weekly newsletter. That has this article and many others. 855-385-5553
Alright, standard data and text rates apply, but you heard it. This is the man we did it live on the air. So you should try it yourself. Craig. Thanks so much, buddy. We'll talk to you next week. Bye-bye. All right, a final word when we return. You're listening to the Jim Pulido show your safe space.
