Craig Peterson: [00:00:00] Hey, if you're thinking about a career in cybersecurity, or maybe you are already someone in cybersecurity. We've got a great little article here from dark reading that gets right into it. What does a job look like?

Hi everybody. Craig Peterson here. Now you've heard about the world's most dangerous jobs and they come down in the United States to two things. One is being a forestry person that cuts down trees and logs and all that sort of stuff. What would you call that a logging person? Even if it's someone who does it in the residential areas, very dangerous, very high rate of insurance, and insurance claims.

And then the other one of course is. Up in the North seas here in the Pacific ocean, up in the past, the Bering Strait and all that mess up there, which is crab fishing. And how dangerous that is there. They're very dangerous. And people leave those jobs often because they got injured. People die from those jobs. It's very scary. they called dead branches on trees, widow makers, because they are going to fall down on you causes just nothing but problems, right? They'll kill you. That's what widow makers all about.

If you are looking at cybersecurity careers, it's not going to kill you. At least. Hopefully, it's not going to kill you, but the number of people that experience burnout is huge. We're talking people on average, leaving these jobs after about eight months. Now, in some cases, they're getting the training that they want and increasing their value in the marketplace and then leaving for a better job, better pay, whatever it is elsewhere because they can.

We're looking at giving or take 2 million open jobs here within the next year or two, I've seen numbers saying as high as 5 million open jobs cybersecurity. That is a very big thing. So if your kids are in college thinking about this, if you're like some of our listeners, a few of you guys, I know I've gone back to school for this.

We're going to be covering some of these things over the next few weeks aspects of cybersecurity jobs, what you might be looking at if you're going to do that. And also right now, we're going to get right into some of the job titles. What's hot. And what's not because cybersecurity, isn't just one thing.

It's like any other it profession, they get very narrow. There are people who are, who are really into two specific things. Now the job sets are not as they were two or three years ago. Now, this is according to, let's see, it's Michael Malley, VP of strategy at Radware, and I have to agree with him.

He is saying that the types of skillsets employers are looking for is evolving rapidly. And we'll be talking more about some of the stuff next week, but the bottom line for next week is that university degrees in cybersecurity will not get you hired. That's the bottom line here.

They want people who have hands-on experience with this because it gets so difficult. The whole red team blue team, where you have one team of people who are attacking the infrastructure and another group of people who are trying to defend the infrastructure, all important stuff, and very difficult to, by the way, the red team are the hardest people to find. People who are attacking, who have attack skills.

So we're seeing a lot of changes over the last few years, and now we've got this whole WuHan virus and people afraid of the COVID-19.

So now we've got these large scale remote workforces we're trying to deal with. We're seeing a need for people who understand that concept and have the ability to implement what is called zero-trust work environment. This means just because you have a login doesn't mean you should have access to this machine.

It's like I've said forever. I have caught salespeople going into the accounting systems and the accounting shares and changing their compensation. Yeah, they do that. Not all of them, but the less scrupulous ones do. So we need to come to the understanding that it is a business really. We can't trust anything.

Zero trust networks. Now go to the point where even inside the office itself, there is no trust dabbling between the different devices that are on the same switch.

Now, many of us have done this in the past by using some basic technology kinda like VPNs, right? Where we set up a virtual network and that network has the ability to talk to specific things.

All these specific machines are on that little virtual network called a VLAN that we can set up. So that's all well and good. Yeah.

Now we're moving really to the next level where every device on a switch or anything within the organization speaks directly to and only to a firewall slash router.

We don't want this one to go to a generic router, we want it to go to a firewall. We want to make sure that it computer isn't infected and is trying to cross infect.

One of the first things that happen when the bad guys get control of a system inside a network is they try and spread laterally. So they have control of a workstation. They try and get on other workstations within the business, find out what information is there that they can steal, that they can ransom. That's what they're trying to do.

So as the true zero-trust network says, okay, Marie's workstation is trying to scan other machines on the network and it is shut off.

That's the sort of thing we do. We stop the intrusions, we stop the hacks and that's what you need as well. Everything and everyone inside the network should be considered to be an outsider.

Now, this whole concept of zero-trust is gaining popularity for very good reasons. I talk on the show every week about another company that has been hacked.

So that has been a fish that has had ransomware that has had people inside, the Chinese back doors, man, it seems to be a weekly occurrence for us.

Yet when you hear some of these feds talking about it under oath, Is there any evidence of the Chinese getting into any systems here to the United it States? They're talking about Huawei, they're talking about, all of these different companies from China, and they say, No, there's no evidence.

I have personally seen it.  I ran the FBI's InfraGard webinars for a couple of years. I put them together. I hosted them. I got the interviews. I did the interviews, the Q and A.

I have not only seen this stuff myself on business networks, but I have spoken to many people who've also seen it. So I don't get why. These people in the government are trying to deny that the Chinese are doing anything here. It's absolutely just mind-blowing to me. So we've got more and more organizations putting their workloads now into public and private clouds and they're less interested in the hardware expertise.

They want people who understand techs complex, IP infrastructure, not right, realizing what's really going on. A bigger focus on business resiliency really is this third major trend and the know-how needed here really focuses on technologies that make a network more intelligent and enabled to learn how to protect itself.

Thinking about automation, about integration, about one pane of glass, about artificial intelligence and machine learning. So we're going to get into those exact titles, those exact roles. So you know what they are. So that we can speak to where's the career path, where are things going?

And I can give you a little hint, AI and machine learning. They're going to be big.

Craig Peterson: [00:00:00] Hey, thinking about cybersecurity jobs, maybe for you as a second, third, fourth career, maybe for your kids, or grandkids. We're going to get into that now. What are the hot jobs?

You're listening to Craig Peterson online and here on WGAN radio as well.

I promised this article here really the whole show. This is one Engadget by John Fingas and it is absolutely spot on. Huawei is the problem and we've talked about it many times here on the show.

I've talked about it with Matt Gagnon during the morning drive time, and many other hosts, as well as on television, et cetera. Huawei is a problem. It is owned and operated by the socialists in China, by the Chinese communist party. As we've talked about many times before socialism where they are just basically taking ownership of everything. Not allowing you to advance, holding you down, just cannot innovate.

So Huawei and many other companies over in China have been stealing data and information and again I got proof. I just had a conversation this week with a gentleman who had designed security the system for apartment buildings, brand new, all designed, all laid out. He had Britain code. He had all of the hardware mechanisms designed and the interactions the user interfaces, all of that and it was stolen by the Chinese.

The socialist party in China got their hands on it. They gave it to someone again, just like Animal Farm. everyone's equal here in socialism except we're more equal, right? It wasn't that the pigs in animal farm, They were more equal than everyone else.

So what happened was they gave it to some people who were high up in the communist party, the good party people, the types of people that turn other people in, and they started manufacturing this system in China. Here he is counting on it to be part of his retirement. He's worked for years, putting it together.

He has it all together. The Chinese break into his computers, unbeknownst to him, and then start manufacturing and selling his product in the United States.

Basically, nothing he can do about it. That's again, people. That's why I keep telling you don't use Lenovo devices. They are made in China. They have been found to have spyware on them. Avoid Huawei equipment. If you have any of the routers, any of their switches, get rid of it. Again, problems have been found in those devices.

Now we are looking at those people who unfortunately bought a Huawei Android device. Yet another reason not to use Android. But it isn't just, Huawei, it's a number of other Chinese manufacturers that are out there. The Washington Post confirmed that. After more than a year, the commerce department has stopped giving Huawei temporary licenses to get copies of the latest version of it. Android in order to support the customers quietly expired apparently on August 13.

Now it is illegal for Google and other software developers to send updates to Huawei, which means Huawei customers. If you have a Huawei device that runs Android, phone, or tablet, or anything else, you are out of luck. If you have a Huawei P 30 pro or other Huawei phone with full Google services. You not going to get on Android 11 or any other updates going forward, including security patches.

How's that for fun? Google spokesperson also told the post that the temporary license was key to delivering Android updates through official means. How about an official backdoor means. Why do you think he said that a minute, any phones sold inside of China are using the Android and the pro inside a China should still get updates because while we can use the open-source version of Android while delivering updates itself, so you might luck out in that way.

Because they'll be using the open-source stuff, but they're not going to be getting the best, the top, the patches that really you might want to have. So this is crazy here. This license, the temporary license that was granted was meant to help these smaller phone carriers phase out the Chinese networking equipment because of not just surveillance fears, but because of real surveillance that's been happening.

The idea is they should theoretically replace hardware gradually. And this is for carriers who are using Huawei equipment for five G. Many of them are using Huawei equipment for routing and for bridges and firewalls. Are you kidding me? So now if you haven't gotten rid of that Huawei phone, you had a year.

You basically have no choice, but to replace your phone. Because otherwise, you're not going to get updates.

We know about all of the security problems with Android. It's just crazy because Google and the manufacturers of the phones and the people who sell, tell it to be on their networks, do not keep patches up to date.

Again, another reason to use Apple iPhone. It's just crazy. Get rid of these things. So I cover that, but let's get back to cybersecurity jobs.

Here's the hot, here's the not, and this is a great little article. They've got something about it up on dark reading.com. Think you'll like that. Hot right now is a data scientist slash security analyst. That's the job title and the idea behind this is to really help businesses be more resilient. Frankly, future-proof the organization. So you need to be able to work on predictive network models. These people are really the people who go and hunt for what's next. How's it going to work with where we are now?

They work in security operations they are building threat models. They're doing incident response or hunting for the unknown bad actors. So hot data scientists and security analysts. Not hot anymore is a security operation center analyst. Here's why. Much of that responsibility there was performed by SOC analysts security operation center analysts is now being automated away.

If you look at something that is fully integrated into the only one that I've ever seen, that's fully integrated from a security standpoint is the Cisco architecture at it is moving more and more to machine learning and automation. We had a customer whose network, the remote network had been compromised.

They were using a VPN. We told them not to use it. We can't dictate what our clients get or buy. We can just make recommendations and sure enough, the remote computer was hacked, had a VPN. What happens next? They spread laterally. So it spread into the main business network. From a remote computer. This is another one warning I'm constantly giving about. VPNs are not a great way to go.

So this role is fading out because companies like Cisco have automation that shot down that remote computer. Instantly. It was absolutely amazing. We got alert. I was just shocked at how well that thing worked. Okay. Thank goodness. Since then, yes, they have not upgraded those connections.

Hot, the dev sec ops security engineer. So this is, basically the operations side. All right by 2025, they're figuring nearly 2/3rds of businesses will be software produces with code deployed daily. So you need somebody who's on the development side of software in operations that understand and security.

So this is a very hot career, but you need to understand a lot. We'll be talking more about this next week, but. Everything basically to do with computers to get this job, everything. Okay. The research by the way, which came from IDC is also forecasting better than one and a half times more developers than we have today are needed here in the future.

Okay. very big deal. I'm not hot. A traditional security engineer is becoming obsolete. They were traditionally centered around security point products. That means things like, Oh, I can install Norton for you. Oh, I can install this Symantec thing for you. Oh, I can install this point.

Product obsolete point products just don't cut it anymore. Hot Security architect. Very big particularly for companies that provide software as a service. Not hot anymore. Hardware engineers, vendor agnostic skills are in demand, but people that have a focus on traditional hardware or custom chipsets are really falling out of fashion.

Hot cloud roles. Gotta be careful with this one because most people aren't doing it very well, but many companies are moving over to the cloud. So they need security. Not hot data center security manager. Okay. The need for on-premise data centers is really cooling down. Gartner Group predicts that by 2025, 80% of enterprises will shut down their traditional data centers.

I'm not sure that's absolutely true because of some of the needs of the military and military contractors, but we're not going to get into that right now. Governance and compliance roles. Very hot. GDPR, the California privacy act, and now we're seeing CMMC and of course, all of the other regulations from HIPAA on out. It is a world that needs more security.

But remember, what we're seeing is that the jobs, whether it's security, or not, they can be replaced by automated systems. Are being replaced starting right now and more and more of those are going to be replaced. Very interesting. So that's, what's happening right now. You'll find all of this and of course, a whole lot more on my [email protected].

When it comes to back to school, and if you live outside of a big city, this frankly might be a problem for you too. We also had a little chat about some more details here. How can you be sure you are buying PPE from a reputable dealer? So all of that and more, here we go.

Matt Gagnon: [00:00:45] We've got Craig Peterson. He's our tech guru. He joins us now as he always does every Wednesday to talk about these technology topics. Craig, are you with me?

Craig Peterson: [00:00:54] I am good morning, Matt.

Matt Gagnon: [00:00:56] I think the, yeah, I'm great. Thanks for asking by the way. I think the topic of the day. The theme, if there was one is code with scams, I know that let me start off by asking about what ISIS is apparently doing, but the only COVID-19 scam or, so it's something that people are using to exploit.

This silly year that we're living in right now, Craig. So why don't we start off with that? COVID 19 PPE scam site.

Craig Peterson: [00:01:23] I don't know, 2020. This is one heck of a weird year. It turns out that as you mentioned ISIS, yeah, those guys, the terrorists that we've been fighting for a long time, they need the money and they've been raising money.

One of the ways this whole thing was money with bin Laden's family. Of course. So how do they make money nowadays? it turns out according to the justice department, one of the ways is this website called face mask center.com. It's fun to think about this sort of thing. Of course, that site now is seized. If you go there, you'll get a seizure notice. If you went there beforehand and you bought some of these personal protective equipment pieces, they were selling like masks and Tyvek suits and you probably never received them. You also probably paid with cryptocurrency. Now that's a dead giveaway, Matt.

    Matt Gagnon: [00:02:25] Yep.

It is true, but it's not the only COVID-19 scam out there, obviously. people are looking for this kind of thing right now and there's, there seems to be a lot of that kind of thing going around. I was looking at some stuff just a couple of weeks ago about just how many of these things are out there.

And by the way, Not just, PPE scams like this one. But, miracle cures and other things, people are setting up all kinds of things like that right now. Or they're not.

Craig Peterson: [00:02:49] Oh, absolutely. Just like in Pete's dragon people going around and selling snake oil.

Matt Gagnon: [00:02:54] Wow. Pete's Dragon. I haven't heard of that one in a while.

    That's good, that's a good reference.

Craig Peterson: [00:02:57] Maine, right? COVID-19 scams are absolutely huge. There's a company out there. That's been keeping track of a lot of them called dark owl. And there's a security firm that there's a security firm. That's been trying to track it for a month. And they're seeing these seen a massive volume of these illegitimate materials, like PPE being sold, never delivered.

Massive problems with the quality of some of these masks, et cetera. In fact, California, the governor there ordered some as may be part of a payback scheme, by this sounds in some of the reports coming out, but they had to return all of those what's China going to do with all of it, some substandard stuff.

They've been selling it on all kinds of websites out there. So a couple of tips for listeners and Matt, we actually talked about this some months ago when you're online and you're shopping. Obviously you want to look for reviews. You want to look for ratings. You'll find those on the Amazon site. Now, there are only a few reviews.

You've got to be careful. But there are some things to look for in those reviews, whether it's E-bay or maybe even some other sites, one is their grammar, their diction, and their punctuation's terrible. If it's really bad, you've got to start wondering and then read them carefully and decide for yourself.

Was this just a generic thing that was written and would apply? To anything from a garden rake through special gloves and the face mask. And if it is, it's almost certainly one of these fake paid four ratings that we're finding is being used all over the internet today. So watch for bad grammar. Watch for ratings and comments and feedback that just don't apply specifically to whatever it is you're buying,

Matt Gagnon: [00:04:56] We're speaking with Craig Peterson. He is our tech guru. You can hear him on this very network, by the way, on Saturdays at one o'clock, he's got his own show where he goes into all of these stories and more in-depth in detail.

if you want to hear more and make sure you tune in on the weekend for Craig Peterson.

This story is fascinating to me. I've actually been following this myself for a little bit because I think it's a really interesting technology. So SpaceX, right? I just saw that Elon Musk is now just a hair behind Zuckerberg and the wealth list.

And I think it's because of stuff like this, right? They're not just doing launches into space. They're doing something called Starling, which is going to be satellite-based internet service. and a lot of people who've had this kind of thing in the past or whatever. they wonder about speed.

So what exactly is this going to be in terms of internet speed? Is this going to be anything? Something that has a wire being plugged into my house?

Craig Peterson: [00:05:46] Oh, this is absolutely massive here, especially for us in the Northeast. Starlink is going to be, what's called a constellation of satellites. In fact, just last weekend they launched and another 50 or so satellites up there and there's 600 so far.

It's in beta test. Now they're saying that it will be a gigabit speed, which is absolutely massive. It's just an incredible amount of data speed. it is going to also have low latency, at least relatively speaking. And we're talking 200 milliseconds where it gets geeky, but here's great news for us up here.

If you've been having trouble getting your internet and just this morning, you guys had a show or not a show. I mentioned of a lady, who's trying to get it for getting her kids back to school. It's a real problem right now.

You can go to their website. You can go to, again, it's called Starlink. You can go to starlink.com, S T a R L I N k.com. And you can sign up to be part of their beta test program that is going to cost you a dollar. For the first month. And that includes the satellite dish that they're going to send you with instructions on how to install it. Then month two in doubles, it goes up to $2 a month for what is looking to be right now about 50 megabits, which is a huge win for many of us out in rural areas.

So you'll get 50 megabits for two bucks a month while it's in beta testing. If you go to Starlink dot com you can sign up. They are looking for beta testers. They're going to go through two rounds of beta tests. You may or may not be chosen, but frankly, the further you are out in the wild the better for you. Yeah.

Matt Gagnon: [00:07:47] You know the thing about this too, this is one of those things, and I apologize for getting up on my soapbox about this when you are challenged like Maine is with a lot of rural areas that don't have broadband delivery. Some people who live in towns that have, 12 people in them and, and just don't have that kind of infrastructure available to them.

You have people who are in government all the time saying we need to find a way to bring rural broadband to the end. We're going to spend tens, if not hundreds of millions of dollars, extending out all this internet service to these really remote areas for not very many customers, to, just as an applause line or as an agenda item or whatever.

And they're going to spend all this money and then what's going to happen is something like this will come around. there are other things in development. It's not just this. there's those, the balloon internet that I think Zuckerberg was all freaking out. What about before and other things, right?

They could come and deliver it in a night in a nanosecond, just something like that it's developed and released and boom, all of that hundreds of millions of dollars of investment is completely worthless.

Craig Peterson: [00:08:45] In the tech world, we've been seeing this sort of thing for a long time. The government is really good at spending other people's money. It is not good at picking winners. And when we're talking about winners here, I was like, this could be a very big win. And when we think about it, get right down to it. Investors, these angel investors that are professionally investing in technology companies. If they're lucky, one out of their 10 investments pans out of think about how terribly the federal government has done investing in technologies, such as batteries and solar and others, where in fact, they have invested in some of the biggest losers ever. We've already lost billions of dollars by them doing that.

So I think you're right. This is going to be rolling out SpaceX isn't the only one that's going to have one of these satellite Constance constellations. Work orbit that it's going to provide us with coverage. Ultimately, we're going to see our cell phones, our smartphones, whatever these things are going to be called we're going to see them directly linking to various constellations up there.

So yeah, don't rush out to spend billions on this.

Matt Gagnon: [00:09:59] Yeah. good advice. Craig Peterson, our tech guru. Once again, you can hear him on the weekend here on WGAN. You can hear a lot of these topics and more in more detail. Thanks a lot, Craig. Appreciate it as always. And we'll talk again soon.

Craig Peterson: [00:10:11] Take care, Matt.

    Matt Gagnon: [00:10:12] All right,

coming up next. Let's talk to everybody. We will be, of course, doing a full show. This weekend. I've been videotaping the last one, three or four shows as well as we work on this site to try and make this a bit more of a video show. So I think this is going to be fun. Hey, let me know by the way.

I'm trying to figure this out. Would it make sense for me to post these as video podcasts on the same feed that you're listening to me now or strictly audio? I know a lot of the platforms only support audio.

So I'm thinking maybe this would end up being a completely different thing that I posted maybe on Facebook or. Oh on YouTube or other places, but send me a quick note. [email protected]. I'd love to hear from you like to know what's going on.

Alright, everybody, take care and we'll talk again on the weekend. Bye-bye.

  • AS HEARD ON - The Jim Polito Show - WTAG 580 AM: Online Shopping Scams, ISIS, DOJ, SpaceX Starlink

    Welcome!

Good morning, everybody. I was on the Jim Polito show this morning and spoke with Steve Fourni who was sitting in for Jim. We discussed what happened this week with the DOJ and Online shopping scams, some run by ISIS -- yes that ISIS. Then we discussed a new technology that can change rural internet forever. SpaceX Starlink. Here we go with Steve.

    Automated Machine Generated Transcript:

[00:00:00] Craig Peterson: It's pretty obvious when you're reading that this is a generic review that is not mentioning any of the features that you might be looking for in that product.

Hey, Just when you thought it was not safe to shop online, it turns out yeah. It really wasn't safe to shop online and it still isn't. Oh my gosh.

Now the terrorists are in on the PPE thing. Craig Peterson here, and I was on this morning on Mr. Jim Polito show. Steve Fourni. I was sitting in for him and we had some fun discussions.

    Here we go.

[00:00:39] Steve Fourni: It's Steve Fourni in for Jim this morning and you know what that music means? We do it at this time.

Every Tuesday. Here we go to our favorite Canadian, our good friend, Craig Peterson, with all the information. Good morning, Craig. How are you, sir?

[00:00:52] Craig Peterson: Hey, good morning. I guess that's my cue.

[00:00:55] Steve Fourni: Yeah, that's the best I got. I can give you a more elongated intro, but I'd rather people hear from you. Not me, you know what I mean? It's funny, we've heard about the PPE scams. We've heard about the stimulus check scams. Never let a good scam go by without ISIS getting involved. Craig, what's the latest on that?

[00:01:14] Craig Peterson: Isn't that the weirdest thing ever. ISIS of all groups. Yeah, they've gotten in on this big time and that you can go to the website right now, facemaskcenter.com. You're going to see a seizure warning. The justice department has been tracking what's been going on. Apparently our friends at ISIS have been selling, all kinds of personal protective equipment, like masks Tyvec suits, the goggles, the face shields, et cetera.

Apparently some of these scams sites and maybe also including this ISIS site, but they'll ship a substantially inferior products. California ordered a bunch, Governor Newsom out there from China, through a friend of his, kickbacks, you gotta make sure you're doing that if you're in government. They were all substandard and they are showing up all over the dark web.

Now, in the case of ISIS, apparently, they were not shipping products. So we've got millions of people who are desperate for these protective pieces of equipment. And they were. Sending money to ISIS. It's just absolutely amazing.

So the FBI department of justice has shot these particular sites down right now. We've got to be very careful when we're online looking for some of this stuff.

Pay attention when you're shopping online, go to a site that's well known. I like Amazon in many ways. I use it all the time. You can look at the ratings, although there are obviously people who are putting fake ratings up. They actually pay people to put a fake positive rating. If you see something where there are 500 right positive ratings, it's probably legit. I've had to turn to eBay.

Do you know Steve? I have chickens and I also am a beekeeper. Did you know that?

    [00:03:11] Steve Fourni: I didn't. That's good. That's interesting information.

[00:03:16] Craig Peterson: When I'm taking care of my bees, for the first year I didn't even wear it and he loves it all. Usually, you only get stung if you grab a bee right. They're not going to really bother you except in the fall when they start getting more aggressive protecting their honey.

I use some heavy surgical gloves, these really great gloves. I love them. They are extra thick and extra long so they go over my beekeeper's suit on the arm and I have had a devil of a time trying to find them, but I did find them on eBay. Somebody still had some, the prices a little higher than it used to be, but not that much higher, maybe a buck or two.

I've been looking for them for months. I'm, I know I'm not alone. Obviously I'm not a doctor or practicing medicine anymore. The bottom line. It's hard to find this stuff. If you go to eBay, what I do is check the ratings. eBay's great about that. This guy had over a half a million ratings, and he had five stars on average, like 4.9 something.

So I felt safe buying from him and pretty sure that it wasn't ISIS that was involved. Then I tracked the package as it was being shipped.

[00:04:32] Steve Fourni: We're talking with Craig Peterson and yeah, eBay's one that I don't spend too much time on. and again, I bought some stuff on Amazon that, it took four weeks to get here and then you get it and it's basically just a hunk of junk. And you're looking at it's like made in China or whatever.

So are there things, like oftentimes I'll go to the product description and even everybody says, buy American and when you're buying stuff online, a lot of times you can't really see that information.

Are there places that you mentioned reviews and stuff, but is there stuff in the description may be that people should be looking for when they're buying stuff online? To know that it's legitimate. Are there like keywords we should be looking for or anything like that?

[00:05:07] Craig Peterson: Yeah, absolutely. when you're looking at these reviews that people are posting, it's usually a dead giveaway if the grammar is poor. Now, if you flunked out first grade English, maybe you're going to have a hard time with that. If you see a lot of reviews, sometimes 50 reviews or a hundred, and I did a whole show on this at one point, that is just terribly written. Or it's pretty obvious when you're reading, but this is a generic review that is not mentioning any of the features that you might be looking for in that product. It's probably fake.

So there's a couple of tips to look for when you are looking at those reviews.

[00:05:49] Steve Fourni: Interesting. We're talking with Craig Peterson, our tech talk guru and good stuff, especially when you're buying, whatever that whatever the hot product is. In this case, unfortunately, it's PPE. But when you're trying to buy the same thing, everybody else is buying. That's really the time that you really need to keep that antenna up.

[00:06:05] Craig Peterson: Oh yeah. Yeah, absolutely. they're massive volume of all these illegitimate materials it's being sold, never delivered. The fact is that in this case, ISIS decided to get on the business and making some money and using it for terrorism.

[00:06:22] Steve Fourni: Oh boy, that's unfortunate. Craigo, let's switch gears here a little bit and talk about SpaceX. what is the latest stuff going on with SpaceX?

[00:06:31] Craig Peterson: Oh, this is so cool. SpaceX Elon Musk has got a bunch of businesses going. Their stock is up and down. They had some good news this last week, but what we didn't talk about right now is Starlink.

SpaceX got a license to put thousands of satellites up into orbit and they just launched some more. They launched 58 of them this last weekend. Isn't that amazing. So right now, Starlink has about 540 satellites in orbit. What's happening is that SpaceX is setting up what's called a constellation of satellites.

These satellites are all orbiting the earth. Trying to cover the entire earth. It is going to give you, they say eventually here, gigabit internet anywhere in the world, which is just amazing.

Now, here's cool news for us here in the Northeast. That is that SpaceX is looking for beta testers, and they're going to have two different rounds of beta testing.

If you are living in rural, anywhere in Mass in Vermont, and anywhere up here in the Northeast and Connecticut, Rhode Island. They are looking for you because that's right now where this first part of the constellation is aimed. You can get what right now looks like it's about 50 megabits, 500 hundred bits worth of speed.

Now, if you've got cable, I've got three gigabits to go to my house, but I'm not normal. 50 megabits that is a joke to me, but if you're in a rural area, Steve, people are really just striving to get any internet, very slow internet in many places.

There are two things they're going to help you out with that. One is five G if it comes to your area. But it's not going to come to many rural areas in reality. Right now has the best coverage and you can use that event surely here in place of your cable or your telephone internet. Now with Starlink, you can go to their website and they're charging Steve. I hope you're sitting down, the first month is a dollar for 50 megabits. Then it doubles every month after that. If you can believe that it goes to $2 a month after that for 50 megabits. It's phenomenal. So here's the trick. They're looking for beta testers and that they want them in different areas here in the Northeast.

And, you can maybe get it. There are no guarantees at all, but where you want to go online and apply is to go right now to starlink.com. I've registered for this as well because I want to see what's happening, but they will provide you with a satellite dish that takes you about 20 minutes to mount give or take. They have lip mounts. They have roof mounts. They have mounts to put into your lawn. It's just a pole with the satellite dish on top. These are small dishes. It's not like the big old KU, K band stuff that I used to have. You can install it yourself. It's included in that dollar and, now you're often running. So this is so cool. When they're done with this, which is probably next year. You're going to be able to get inexpensive internet, certainly throughout the Northeast US, and eventually around the world.

[00:10:12] Steve Fourni: I hope they get that information to the people of a rural Vermont, via telegram. Cause otherwise, they have no internet to even get that. In fact, when I go to my, my, I go to my inlaws it's little, cause it was a little like this, you know,

A lot of those places like up in Vermont, they like it that way. They're like this might work for them because they're like, how dare you put a cell phone tower in the middle of that beautiful field that nobody's using. So they're very anti, that, so this might actually be a way for them to actually, I don't know, get with the times a little bit,

[00:10:46] Craig Peterson: eventually, it'll be gigabit and it's going to be going to go up. That $2 per month fee isn't going to last.

[00:10:52] Steve Fourni: Yeah. I figured. and lastly, I guess on this, what is, what do you think that's going to do to the rest of the marketplace? Obviously that's going to affect what Xfinity and Comcast and everybody else's are offering if this thing takes off.

[00:11:05] Craig Peterson: Yeah. Look at the Comcast that they've lost a half a million subscribers here recently is that business is dying because they were so greedy. It wasn't just Comcast. It was all of the providers. It was ESPN saying, if you want any of our content, you have to pay for everybody who has cable. That type of mentality is going to kill these companies.

So they're starting to cut back. They're starting to unbundle things. I love the competition. The five G as well as the satellite networks, because a SpaceX isn't the only one is really going to bring some of these, prices down. Finally, we had hoped that having online streaming was going to make it happen like that but of course it just hasn't. The competition when it settles in. The FCC under Trump has been really strong on trying to make sure there is competition. It's going to be phenomenal.

[00:12:06] Steve Fourni: Hopefully, I can get rid of the house phone that Comcast made me get that somewhere in the basement. That phone number, I don't even know what it is, but you gotta have a landline. Okay. Great, wonderful.

Craig. Yeah. What's the best way for people to get more information from you on a regular basis.

[00:12:21] Craig Peterson: The best way is to get my newsletter. If you go to Craig peterson.com/subscribe, you're going to be able to get my weekly newsletter that has these stories and so much more. Then also it has the links to my radio show, which you'll hear on Saturdays at 11:00 AM. Right here, the same station.

[00:12:39] Steve Fourni: That's great. And make sure you're listening to those links outside of the hours of six to nine, please. Of course. no, just kidding, Craig. we appreciate the time, have yourself a wonderful rest of the day and we'll catch up soon.

[00:12:51] Craig Peterson: Take care, Steve. Bye. Bye.

[00:12:52] Steve Fourni: Alright, take it easy. Yeah, I'm with Craig. I love competition, especially with the, how long has it been, where we've been handcuffed by our cable provider?

    Welcome,

Craig Peterson: [00:00:00] Oh, yeah, that ISIS. So we've been fighting for years. They had a COVID 19 website up. Absolutely amazing face mask center.com. If you go there now, you'll see an FBI seizure warning.

Good morning. I got some great news. If you live in the Northern US and particularly here in the Northeast from our friends at Tesla guy.

So we'll get into that also an ISIS scam. Yeah. Those guys that were going around killing, murdering, doing nasty stuff. They had a different angle. They were making money off of scamming you. So here I was with Mr. Jack Heath this morning.

[00:00:44] Jack Heath: And joining us now with some tech talk updates.

Craig Peterson joins us live now on the Autofair listener lines, and his show airs Saturdays, as well, here on our iHeart stations. Craig. Good morning. I understand maybe more affordable internet access in the North country as well as more COVID-19 scams.

[00:00:58] Craig Peterson: Yeah, the internet man. This is going to change absolutely everything. Space X has been launching satellites. You might've heard about this. They've got a whole new network called Starlink right now. They have about 540 satellites. It was going to go up into the thousands. But there's really good news. Write this down right now. If you live in particularly more rural areas here in the Northeast.

But Starlink is looking for beta testers and you can sign up. It's going to cost you though. It's a dollar for the first month, and $2 for every month after that until they get out of the beta phase.

They're finding that the internet that you'll get from this right now, according to tests online, done by third parties is about 50 megabits and Starlink is aiming to get that up to gigabit speed. So there you go. In the North country, 50 megabits for two bucks a month. Pretty good. And where you need to go in order to get this it just goes online, go to Starlink dot com. Now you're going to have to sign up and be accepted, but once you're in there, you are in there. So very, very good for the North country and I think for the rest of the state.

We're going to get some competition for those cable TV and the companies, of course, that is providing us with phone service for so long.

    [00:02:23] Jack Heath: Interesting

[00:02:24] Craig Peterson: Yeah, the ISIS front, just a warning again. Be careful of scams. ISIS has just been shut down. Yeah. That ISIS that we've been fighting for years. They have COVID 19 website up. Absolutely amazing face facemask center.com. If you go there now, you'll see an FBI seizure warning, but they were selling pretty much any sort of personal protection equipment, Tyvek suits to masks a whole bunch of other things. Apparently, they were actually fulfilling them, but with substandard products would not protect you from COVID-19. So again, be very careful. And according to the FBI, they've seen a massive volume of illegitimate materials like PPE being sold and never delivered as well. So double-check those inventories.

[00:03:18] Jack Heath: All right, Craig Peterson. Thank you very much. Watch.

[00:03:22] Craig Peterson: Hey, I want to make sure you got my email this weekend, my regular weekly newsletter? We've had some trouble getting that thing out much of it frankly, my fault. We sent a newsletter out about that too, a couple of weeks ago.

Thanks for everybody's wonderful comments but let me know if you didn't get it. You should have gotten not only all of the articles for this week that I talk about but also one another thing.

I answer questions all of the time from people. Some of them are from you guys who are on the podcasts and some of them are from the radio appearances and TV and everything. What I decided to do is, assuming I have the time, and I'm going to try and be fairly consistent about this, but at least once a month, including my response that I've given to someone.

Somebody question this last week, it was a gentleman by the name of Dick. Well, that's, of course, his first name. We will keep your information confidential. We're not going to publish your email or anything. He had emailed me Craig peterson.com with his question. I thought it was a great question.

I thought everybody should. know the right answer to it and that's why we put it in the newsletter.

So new little feature for you in the newsletter.

    All right, everybody, take care.

Have a great weekend. We will be back tomorrow. Bye-bye.

Bye-bye.

Craig Peterson: [00:00:00] You've heard about Tik Tok and all of the problems there did, there are hundreds of apps that are tracking you and your data.

Hey, it's Craig Peterson. Thanks for joining us here on the radio, online on my website, all over the place. I really appreciate it. And yeah. I love it. If you would subscribe to my podcast, you can do that. Of course, by going to your favorite podcast platform, there's many out there and I'm on pretty much all of them would love to have you join me there.

Tik Tok is a real problem right now, many people just aren't aware of what's really been going on. Tik Tok is a Chinese built and run piece of software that has been caught multiple times grabbing our personal information. Things like who our contacts are, who we are contacting frequently, even things like phone numbers, it addresses the whole shooting match check top basically is.

Kind of evil. And in fact, what Tik Tok has been doing is sending out and information to China, where it's now available to the socialist government over in China, the Chinese communist party, which is of course an issue of a very big issue. At least it should be for all of us. Is that data that you have been sharing.

Maybe unbeknownst to you with Tik Tok is in their hands forever. This means the rest of your life. So think about it. If you've got on tick-tock a few years ago, maybe you were younger than right now, you're in your twenties. You're off of work. Many of these people, these young kids that are now out in the job field in the job world are where.

some of them might be security specialists. Some of them might be working for the federal government or they're sensitive businesses. Just think of all of the manufacturers that are selling to the DOD. So now these same kids that were kids just a few years ago are now adults out there in the real world.

And Tik Tok has all of this information about them that they can steal. They can sell it. They can use to figure out how can I get into that company? Hey, I want to get into Boeing and their jet engine division. And once I'm in the jet engine division, I can poke around a little bit. I can get information on some of the jet engines that are used by the military and then take all of that and put it together.

Have you noticed how so many of these Chinese military jets, even their aircraft carriers look a lot like ours? Some of them actually have plug and play replacement Smiths that can be used for some of our US military equipment. Now they're carriers, not so much. The carriers have some of our techs acknowledging in fact, a lot of them in there, but they still haven't mastered a few things like the catapult, et cetera.

Hey, there's another opportunity to steal from us. Think about the whole idea behind socialism. The bottom line is everybody is equal except for the people at the top. There they're more equal, right? Read animal farm, great books, or George Orwell, but they are more equal than everybody else. So the rules don't really apply to them.

Actually that's been happening here too. Hasn't it? But the rules, I don't apply to them. And for the rest of the population, they're pushing down your ability to start businesses. They control what you say, what you think, who you are associate with. All of the stuff is controlled. if it's controlled, if I can't just go out and create a new product, go out and hire who I want and do whatever I might want to do.

Guess what? There's no innovation. So in a socialist country, how do you innovate? the bottom line is theft, right? That's exactly what China is doing right now. They don't have the innovation. They don't have the motivation for innovation because unless you are high up inside the party apparatus, you are not going to get a chance to do anything.

We could get into a lot of other stuff here, wild way, why there are problems with them and what has been doing, the Chinese government has given Huawei more money. Then the entire world's five G implementation is going to cost. In other words, the Chinese government went and gave Huawei enough money to equip the entire world for free with Chinese five G technologies.

How do you think that works? Where do you think that comes from? it comes from the fact that. They want to get the fingers into everything, know what's going on, have all of this technology available to them. Everything. Yeah. Internet. I see ICM bees, the Intercontinental ballistic missiles. We gave them the technology to launch missiles against the US.

If you can believe that, right? That's a real problem. If he asked me, let's get into this app story here. It is absolutely fascinating. And the bottom line is, Oh my gosh. There is so much of they're doing that we don't know about now. I'm not just talking about the Chinese here. But I'm talking about our government.

there are restrictions in place for the US government. They do not allow them to do certain things. One of those things is to track us as civilians. Now here's where the problem comes in. How can they track us if they're not allowed to track us? they've got to work around. So I want to go to this article from all of all places travel, excuse me, Android authority.

We got it up on the screen right now, so you can check it out yourself and they have a report out that talks about hundreds of apps. That has hidden tracking software that's being used by the government. how does this work? if the government, if our government can track us, how are they going to track us?

The bottom line, they want to, we know already about the five eyes, the seven eyes, the. What is it? 14 eyes or 11 eyes. I'm trying to remember. These are countries that spy on each other citizens for the other country. So for instance, the US federal government cannot spy on us as individuals, unless we are suspects in a case bottom line.

And so then they can go to the court, they can get court orders, they can examine what's going on. You can't just blanket, grab all of our information, funnel it into some database based somewhere, and then use it for whatever they want to ultimately write, which can obviously be a problem. It goes back to show me the man I'll show you the crime.

what they're pointing out in this secular article is something that is very. Concerning because there's a new report that came out from the wall street journal here in the last week and exposes that apparently there has been a new development in mobile phone tracking. it's legal for businesses to keep information on us.

We've known that I've had data brokers on my show as many as 10 years ago, frankly, where I was talking with them about, okay, what data can you gather? Where's the legality here. Basically a private company can gather almost any information they want on this. Look at Equifax. What happened there, where we had all of these data breaches, right?

We had over a hundred million people's personally identifiable information stolen, and it wasn't just from the US, it was stolen on Canadian citizens and many other citizens that were here in the US that were there in Canada. So they were collecting the data. The federal government cannot collect the data.

Do you see where I'm going? can you see that the mix here? You're here. It's coming. Here's coming. So what does the federal government do? It buys the data from data brokers. So what are the, what they've exposed this last week is that apparently there is at least one federal contractor that has been putting in government tracking software in more than 500 mobile applications?

Now, if that's not something that kind of blows your mind and should frankly, so in this case, I, again, you'll find this on Android authority. You'll find it and more about it on the wall street journal. But the contractor, in this case, is a Virginia based company called and normally six LLC. And it's pain, mobile app developers to include it's.

In house tracking code within their apps. Now the app developers don't have to disclose that this tracking code is in there. They don't have to disclose that this data is then being sold to the federal government. no. They just aggregate the data and they sell it to the US government. It's happening and it's illegal, absolutely legal.

The wall street journal story goes on more and more. And although this company anomaly six would not disclose the apps that their code is embedded in and where it has the partnerships, the wall street journal could not figure out the details through other methods. At least at the time, they published the article.

This is a bit of an issue here. Okay. App developers don't need to disclose that there is this data, broker technology built into it. So you could have one or even dozens of apps with this government tracking code. Right there on your mobile device and you would have no idea. Absolutely amazing.

Absolutely amazing. What's going on here. So that's the basics of what you need to know, By the way, anomaly six says all of this data is actually anonymized. So there's nothing to worry about. Nothing. Ignore the man behind the curtain, but as the best and brightest listening to my show for years, there's something called de-anonymizing that allows you to pretty easily take any data set and figure out who the people really are within that data set, even if it is supposedly anonymous.

Hey, when we come back, I got to tell you about this cool new app that I found. It's actually a website and we're going to talk about new Microsoft office attacks.

You're listening to Craig Peterson. Thanks for joining us.

Stick around. We've got a lot more coming up here or right after the break.
