  • Superman 80th Anniversary

The 1000th Issue of Action Comics comes out today- a feat no other comic in history has been able to accomplish. It’s fitting since 2018 marks the big boy scout’s 80th anniversary year. 80! Can you believe it? That’s eight decades of leaping tall buildings in a single bound! Not only has he overcome a lifetime of challenges, Superman has become the archetype of which all other heroes are compared. Without him, the landscape of comic books, comic cons and superhero movies would be completely different. To commemorate the release of this landmark issue, I am posting the audio from my Superman celebration from Portland Comic Con this past weekend. Joining me in this panel are Jason Inman, Ashley Robinson and DC artist, Mostafa Moussa. While we agreed on many parts, there were a few heated debates as well! Let me know what you think of Superman in the comments below. Enjoy and go pick up the 1000th issue today!

  • Fandom to Career Panel @ WonderCon

It was another awesome WonderCon in Anaheim this past weekend. Being awesome on many levels, WonderCon also marks the beginning of the con season. Besides traveling to many cons, the best part is being reunited with old friends to talk about relevant pop culture topics. In the past year and a half, my journey has been more entrepreneurial in nature and it’s been a joy to share it with you on panels and podcast. At WonderCon, I hosted the “Fandom to Career; Making Your Wildest Dreams Come True” panel. Below is the panel description and audio. Enjoy!

Tony B Kim (Hero Within, Crazy 4 Comic Con) hosts a discussion about how to turn your passionate hobby into a promising career. You’ll learn the various ways to monetize your interests, how to launch your brand, and what pitfalls to avoid. Attendees will get a chance to pitch business dilemmas for the panel to help solve. Panelists include Britta Lundin (writer, CW’s Riverdale), Andre Meadows (YouTube personality, host), Chris Gore (comedian, writer), LeeAnna Vamp (cosplayer, host), and a surprise guest.

  • My WonderCon!

WonderCon is easily one of my most favorite shows of the year. I first WonderCon back in 2011 when it was celebrating it’s 25 anniversary at the Moscone Center in San Francisco. Having no idea that it would eventually find a home in Anaheim, I thought it might be the only one I might ever go to. Since that time, I started working for Comic-Con International, covered press at WonderCon several times, hosted many panels and now, this is my second year to return as a vendor with Hero Within. Crazy how you never can predict where the nerdy life will take you. WonderCon also kicks off the countdown to San Diego Comic-Con so it only gets crazier from here. To help me share what’s up and my plans this weekend, check out my interview by the awesome nerds of Geek Speak Show:

I’ll be at Booth 2009 all weekend so I’d love to meet you. I’m also on a couple of panels. First, I host the Fandom to Career panel (Rm 213CD, pic above). Then I close out Friday with the Unnecessary Debates panel with the Grand Geek Gathering team (Rm 207). Hope to see you there!

  • Interview with Edward James Olmos aka Admiral Adama

I’ve been saving this interview for a time such as today. This weekend, Syfy channel is celebrating it’s 25 year anniversary with the best series they ever produced, Battlestar Galactica. In fact, arguably it’s one of the best dramatic and sci-fi-fi series ever made in the history of the 12 colonies. Earlier this year, I was privileged to sit down with Admiral Adama himself, Edward James Olmos, at Sacramento Comic Con. Out of all the panels I have hosted and celebrities I have interviewed, this had to be one of the most insightful experiences of my life. The richness, wisdom and insight Olmos shared transcended the setting of a comic con as we discussed life, passion and the indomitable human spirit. I was personally so blessed and inspired by this short 45 minutes and I think you will be too. Special thanks to Wizard World for the privilege to host this interview. So say we all!

  • Building a Geek Brand Panel (and get paid!)

I’m back from San Diego Comic-Con and after sleeping for 3 days straight, I’m finally ready to post some updates. It was an amazing show that definitely ranks up there as one of the best for me. However, it wasn’t because of panels I saw or booths I visited but the various events I was able to host or participate in. The Building a Geek Brand panel has become one of my favorites I have hosted in a few cons this past year. Not only do we hear the unique journey of different content creators but also workshop a couple of struggling brands in hopes of given them some clear next steps.

    Panel description:

Do you have a big idea that could change the pop culture world but don’t know what to do next? Feeling stagnant in your brand and want to turn it into a career? Started your business but struggling to take it to the next level? Industry pros will share some of their trade secrets to taking a big idea and turning it into a rewarding professional career that shapes culture. Tony B Kim (Hero Within, Crazy 4 Comic Con) hosts panelists Chris Gore (Gemr, Film Threat, G4), Steve Araujo (Nerd Fu), and Ani-Mia (professional cosplayer).

The DC Extended Universe has been changed forever with the arrival of Wonder Woman! Recorded live at Sacramento Comic Con, I am joined by Victor Dandridge, Genese Davis, and Ivy DoomKitty to review the film. Plus we have very special guest, Trina Robbins, the very first female comic book artist for Wonder Woman! In this 45 minute discussion, we share what we loved, what could have been better and give our final grade for Wonder Woman. Warning, there will be spoilers!

Bleeding Cool did a great article recapping the panel.

  • My Interview with Peter Capaldi at Minneapolis Comic Con

This weekend at Minneapolis Comic Con, I had a chance to interview the 12th Doctor himself, Peter Capaldi. He was a total delight- so grateful for his experiences, appreciative of Whovian fandom and he was a total Doctor Who fan himself. In our interview, he shares about his life growing up, funny stories on-set, his favorite DW locations and how he got the role the role of a lifetime. Special thanks to Wizard World for the opportunity.
