I'm moving the Rough Sketch show to once a month because life (clients, interviews, and general chaos) is loud, and I'm using that extra space to go back to poetry — the thing that actually hooked me on art. I'm Timothy Kimo Brien, your resident instigator, and this episode is me dusting off 12 steno pads, putting pen to paper, and reading a rough sketch called "Going Back" that leans on jazz, nostalgia, and the messy, beautiful return to simplicity. The poem walks through late-night weariness, a mausoleum of depression, and the small ritual of scratching thoughts down as both warning and salvation — basically me trying to send postcards to myself from places I shouldn't have left. I talk about why prompts didn't stick, how I decided no prompt was needed, and why editing in a new way helped the work breathe. Stick around for the pieces I read, give me your honest take, and take this as your friendly nudge to tame that inner critic: create more than you consume, write a poem about what you're going through, and maybe share it with me. I'll catch you next month — same chaos, more poems.
Poem:Going Back
6 Sept 2026
The record spins
The arm lifts up,
over, gracefully
I am back to 1992
Looking at the hard-fought bags
under my bloodshot eyes
Aching body
Aching mind
Vision is blurry
Daily meditation done
French lesson done
The house encompasses us all,
creaks and moans
As the weather changes from an unforgiving summer
To the wet and dreary fall
And I am looking at boxes
piled up for recycling
Making a modern art sculpture
Unfinished diamond painting
Brushes hardened by dry acrylic paint
and empty canvases
Twelve steno pads wait
to become memorials
to my thoughts
That I dare not share with my loved ones
I’ve isolated myself
from the rest of my home
I have created a mausoleum of depression
There are no tickets for sale
Remarkably,
there is no line a mile long to enter
So I feel the only way
to fill the gaping hole
in my soul
Is to go back to the beginning
Jazz playing in the background
Living vicariously
through the disciples
of hard bop and cool
Pen to paper,
releasing inner struggles
Scratching my thoughts
Not as a user manual
But as a warning
A warning of what not to become
Letting the subconscious
out of its self-imposed prison
To feel the sunlight
that finds its way into my cave
Timidly, trembling, cautiously
I’m going back
to when I thought simplicity
Was the way to be
To find the decisions that led me
To a place where I was
Or should have been
Content
And remake those choices to stay there
I’m going back
So I can send postcards
to myself
From where I should have never left

We live in a world that screams for more—more output, more hustle, and more noise. But the most enduring work isn't born from the noise; it’s born from the quiet.
In this special trailer episode, Timothy introduces the upcoming season of the Create Art Podcast: The Sustainable Shift.
Starting this October, we are moving away from the "more-is-better" mindset. Instead, we’re focusing on Sustainable Creativity—finding a way to create that lasts as long as you do. We’ll be exploring the necessity of Reframing Failure as valuable data, and we are launching the "One Project" challenge: a call to commit to just one creative goal, free from the pressures of monetization or public performance.
If you’re ready to protect your energy, reclaim your practice, and create more than you consume, join us for the new season starting in October 2026.

In the final episode of Create Anyway: You’re Allowed to Make Art, we explore a powerful question that many artists avoid: What if what you’ve done is already enough?
Throughout this series, we’ve talked about fear, identity, time, responsibility, and creative pressure. But at the center of all of it is a deeper tension — the belief that we are always behind, always lacking, always needing more before our work “counts.”
This episode challenges that belief.
If you’ve ever felt like:
This conversation will help you reframe success and reconnect with why you started creating in the first place.

Takeaways:
Creating art without an audience might sound like a wild concept, but that’s exactly what we’re diving into today! We explore the big question: If no one ever saw your work, would you still make it? Spoiler alert: You totally should! In a world that’s all about likes, shares, and followers, it’s easy to lose sight of the joy of simply creating for the love of it. We chat about why embracing this private creativity is not only okay but might just be the most important art you produce. So, grab your favorite snack, kick back, and let’s get cozy with the idea of making art just for *you*!
In Episode 13 of Create Anyway: You’re Allowed to Make Art, we explore a powerful and often uncomfortable question for modern creatives: what does it mean to create without an audience?
In today’s world of social media, content creation, and constant sharing, many artists feel pressure to post their work online, build a following, and measure success through visibility. But this shift has changed how many people relate to creativity.
Instead of creating for expression, many begin creating for attention.
This episode challenges that mindset and invites you to reconnect with a more personal form of creativity.
In this episode, we discuss:
If you’ve ever felt discouraged by low engagement, hesitant to share your work, or unsure whether your creativity “counts” without an audience, this episode offers a different perspective.
Art doesn’t need an audience to be valid.
It doesn’t need approval to exist.
And it doesn’t need to be seen to matter.
Sometimes the most important work you create is the work no one else ever sees.
1. When Art Becomes PerformanceSocial media has blurred the line between creating and sharing.
Many artists begin to measure the value of their work by:
Over time, the audience can become the reason you create — instead of the result of creating.
2. The Pressure to Be SeenThere’s an unspoken expectation today:
“If you’re not sharing your work, does it even count?”
This creates pressure to document, post, and perform instead of simply making something for its own sake.
3. Rediscovering Private CreativitySome of the most important creative work happens in private.
Unfinished ideas.
Experiments.
Work that isn’t meant to be shared.
This is where artists develop their voice — away from judgment.
4. Detaching from ValidationWhen your work isn’t immediately seen, it forces a deeper question:
Why am I doing this?
Without external feedback, motivation has to come from something internal — curiosity, expression, or meaning.
5. Audience Comes Later — Or Not at AllAn audience can grow over time.
But it shouldn’t be the foundation of your creative practice.
Art that is built without dependence on attention is often more honest, more personal, and more sustainable.

Many adults think they can’t make art because, honestly, who has the time? Between juggling work, family, and a mountain of responsibilities, creativity can feel like a whimsical dream. But let me hit you with some truth: artists don’t magically find time for their craft; they carve it out like a pumpkin on Halloween! In this episode, we’re diving into how to cultivate a life that welcomes creativity, even when your schedule looks like a jigsaw puzzle missing half the pieces. So, if you think your life is too busy for a splash of paint or a dash of prose, buckle up—because we’re about to make room for that creative spark, one intentional step at a time!
How do you make time for art when you already have a busy life?
In Episode 12 of Create Anyway: You’re Allowed to Make Art, we explore one of the most practical challenges adult creatives face — building a life that actually leaves room for creativity.
Many people with full careers, family responsibilities, and social commitments believe that making art simply isn’t realistic. They assume creativity requires large blocks of uninterrupted time or a lifestyle that most adults can’t maintain.
But the truth is that many artists build their creative lives gradually, carving out small spaces for art within the routines they already have.
In this episode, we discuss:
If you’ve ever felt like your schedule is too full to pursue creative work, this episode offers a realistic and encouraging perspective on how art can coexist with a busy adult life.
You don’t have to abandon your responsibilities to make art.
You simply need to create a life that leaves room for it.
And when you do, creativity becomes something that strengthens the rest of your life — not something that competes with it.
1. Art Rarely Appears in “Free Time”Most adults imagine they’ll make art when life slows down.
But life almost never slows down on its own.
Creative work usually begins when people intentionally carve out small pockets of time rather than waiting for the perfect moment.
2. Start With Small, Sustainable Time BlocksBuilding a creative life doesn’t require massive hours.
Often it begins with:
15 minutes in the morning
30 minutes in the evening
An hour on the weekend
Consistency matters far more than large bursts of effort.
3. Your Environment MattersCreativity becomes easier when your environment supports it.
A small desk.
A sketchbook left open.
A guitar on a stand instead of in a case.
The more accessible your tools are, the more likely you are to use them.
4. Communicating Your Creative TimeMany adults feel guilty protecting creative time because they worry it conflicts with family or work responsibilities.
But creativity often becomes sustainable when people communicate clearly with those around them about what that time means.
5. Art Becomes Part of Life — Not Separate From ItThe goal isn’t to escape life to make art.
The goal is to weave creativity into the life you already have.
When that happens, art stops feeling like an extra burden and starts feeling like a natural part of who you are.

Something strange happens when adults decide to pursue art, and trust me, it’s a wild ride! We dive headfirst into the world of creativity, only to find ourselves tangled up in the pressure of picking the “right” path or medium, like we’re supposed to have it all figured out from day one. But let’s get real for a second: changing your mind doesn’t mean you’ve failed; it means you’re evolving! In this episode, we tackle the oh-so-important permission to change your mind, reminding you that creativity isn’t a straightjacket—it's more like a cozy blanket fort that you can rearrange whenever you want. So come along as we explore how embracing curiosity and experimentation can lead us to the art we were truly meant to make, without worrying about the time we think we might be wasting!
Do artists have to pick one creative path and stick with it forever?
In Episode 11 of Create Anyway: You're Allowed to Make Art, we explore a common fear among new and returning artists: the idea that once you start creating, you must commit to one identity, one medium, or one style permanently.
Many adults hesitate to begin making art because they believe they need to know exactly what kind of artist they want to be. Painter, writer, musician, photographer — the pressure to “pick the right thing” can stop creativity before it even begins.
But creativity doesn’t work that way.
Artists evolve. Interests change. Skills grow. What excites you today may not be the same thing that inspires you five years from now — and that’s a normal part of the artistic process.
In this episode, we discuss:
If you’ve ever felt stuck because you’re afraid to start the “wrong” kind of art, this episode will help you rethink that fear.
You don’t have to get creativity right the first time.
You’re allowed to experiment.
You’re allowed to explore.
And most importantly—
You’re allowed to change your mind.
1. The Pressure to “Pick a Lane”Many people believe that once they start something creatively, they have to commit forever.
Painter.
Writer.
Musician.
But artistic growth often requires experimentation, detours, and curiosity.
Creative identity is something you discover, not something you lock in immediately.
2. Your First Creative Identity Probably Won’t Be Your LastMost artists start somewhere that eventually evolves.
What you enjoy making today might simply be the doorway into something deeper later.
The mistake is thinking early work defines your entire creative future.
3. Changing Direction Isn’t QuittingThere’s a difference between abandoning creativity and redirecting it.
Switching mediums.
Trying new ideas.
Exploring different forms.
These are signs of growth, not inconsistency.
4. Adults Fear Wasting TimeMany people with careers and families worry that trying something new creatively means they “wasted time” on the previous thing.
But creative exploration is cumulative.
Everything you try teaches you something about taste, patience, and process.
Nothing is wasted.
5. Curiosity Is the Real CompassThe most sustainable creative path isn’t discipline alone.
It’s curiosity.
When artists allow themselves to follow interest instead of obligation, they often discover the work they were meant to make.
