Do you hold on to things too tightly? Do you carry the belief that somehow it is your responsibility to hold things together, or save someone or something... and the only way to do that is to hold on?

I can't say that I would have had the courage to let go of my son like Moses' mom did... I think it's possible I might have decided that my idea of how to save him was the only way. The natural inclination here would be to hold on to him - and that would have been his death, and probably hers.

What are you holding on to? What could you let go and give up to God's plan? Jochebed was hugely rewarded when she let her faith overrule her fear... what an amazing example to follow!

Joseph has a plan to keep his family away from the illness and influence of Egyptian culture. At the time Israel moves to Egypt, the people there are heavily urban or intensive agriculture focused. They don't place much value on open grasslands.. or shepherds. God's people are called to be separate, a culture apart. 

I think we need to ponder what physical separation from convenience, fast food, electronics and the city culture of human group thinking would mean in our lives in terms of our physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health. Joseph clearly felt it was important even in the time of Egypt- how much more so is it now?

Plants make all kinds of adaptations to their environment- without a doubt. Occasionally though, a plant's unique ability to cooperate in its environment just might be less about survival of the fittest and more about a clever design that was put in place at the very beginning... the story of bloodroot is strangely at the heart of this struggle between the current dogma of science and an awareness of a Creator God as evidenced in the design of nature... what do you think?

Are you learning your lessons? It's often said that God gives us opportunities to learn our lessons multiple times in multiple ways... that he will continue to give us our lessons until we ultimately learn them. God is a loving parent- wanting the best for us... wanting the best blessings He has available to us. Learning our lessons requires humility and repentance. Judah in Egypt is a beautiful illustration of how we gain access to all the blessings God wants for us to experience when we learn our lessons.

Joseph and his multi-colored coat- it's a popular musical for good reason... it's a great story! I'm personally seeing a different angle on it as I read it this time through. So much is wrong in our world... we can get caught up in it. Doom scrolling is a thing- feeding on the negative, the dysfunctional. It's tempting to use all the evil around us as an excuse, a reason to feel like a victim. But there's another world all around us, existing at the exact same time as the evil- it's a perspective shift... and one that is a conscious choice of drawing near. Which world are you focused on?

Is it possible for a name to set the course of a life? If not, then why are there so many baby name books and websites out there? It's not just because we want to have the coolest name for our child... we want their name to "mean" something... to set the tone of their lives and set them up for the best of everything.

God is already telling us in many ways even just in the early parts of the first book of the Bible that there is power in pronouncing a name over someone's lives. What are you allowing to be pronounced over your life in the name of health? Who are you allowing to do that pronouncing. 

If there is power in the naming... perhaps we should be a bit more careful...

Sibling rivalry leads us to some sinful places because of hurt, jealousy and loneliness. When you add in the emotional anguish of infertility it must be unbearable. Rachel and Leah struggle against their own bodies and against each other, while also vying for the love of the same man... it's a strain on their relationship as sisters to say the least.

How do you heal a rift like this? How do we stop generational trauma? The story of Jacob and Esau is a beautiful map for us to follow- both cautionary tale and how-to.

Did you know that we have a sort of auto-pilot when it comes to our food and our behaviors? If we don't think about it at all, we are very likely to repeat what we saw rather than something new. If we saw a disfunctional family, abuse, disrespect, or even poor eating habits and lack of self-care, we are kinda doomed to repeat it unless we are aware enough to take control of our own life and choose to go a different route.

Esau didn't take his eternal birthright seriously and gave it away for the instant gratification of some soup. Know anyone in your life that is giving away the God's promises for the instant gratification of convenience, ease, or "free time"?
