  • Romans 4:1-12 - Faith Like Father Abraham
Steve Smith :: Creekside Church :: Sunday, December 10, 2023
“What then shall we say that Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh, has found? For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about; but not before God. For what does the Scripture say?” In Romans 4, Paul offers 3 pieces of evidence for justification by faith verified by the Old Testament. In this message, Pastor Steve covers the first two evidences in verses 1-12 showing that neither works nor ceremony have any place in a believers’ justification. Steve’s message follows several announcements. Mark and Mary Bristow close the service with scripture reading for week 2 of Advent.

  • The Cure for What Ails Us - Romans 3:21-31
Steve Smith :: Creekside Church :: Sunday, December 3, 2023
In the wake of an exposition of humanity’s sin problem presented in most of the first 3 chapter of Romans, Pastor Steve transitions to the Good News of God’s cure for our universal sickness. From Romans 3:21-31 we learn 3 important features Paul shares of the remedy for human depravity—the righteousness of God through faith in Christ that reaches all who believe, removes all boasting, and reinforces the Law. Before Steve’s message, Bob Short offers a prayer for Aaron and Kara Jones, who are preparing to move south. Mackenzie and Jesse South close the service with scripture reading for week 1 of Advent.

  • Romans 3:9-20 - Everyone is Guilty
Steve Smith :: Creekside Church :: Sunday, November 26, 2023
Pastor Steve’s message for us is the same as Paul’s message to first century Jews and Gentiles alike: We’re all a mess. From Romans 3:9-20, we learn two reasons why all humans are guilty before God and in need of His grace—our inability to keep the law and the law’s inability to keep us. Steve encourages believers to remember that we are rescued because of God’s mercy, recognize the reason for the world’s corruption as their need for Christ, and remain faithful to expose sin and its remedy in Jesus. The message follows several accouncements.

  • Romans 3:1-8 - Objections Overruled
The apostle Paul proclaimed the gospel, but many in the Jewish community responded with irritation and indignation. Preaching from Romans 3:1-8, Pastor Steve explains how Paul answers 3 objections in defense of God’s just judgment—a God who is firm in His condemnation, faithful in His covenant, and fair in His commendation of His people.

  • Romans 17-29 - Privilege, Not Piety
Steve Smith :: Creekside Church :: Sunday, November 12, 2023
The Jews of Paul’s day were pretty confident in their status as God’s chosen people—but a holy and just God judges lawbreakers regardless of religious privilege or piety. Paul’s indictment in Romans 2:17-29 applies to anyone who relies on external forms of religiosity rather than internal faith in Jesus Christ for salvation. Pastor Steve’s message on this passage follows announcements, including an introduction to new members at Creekside.

  • Romans 2:1-16 - Judging the Judge
    Bob Short :: Creekside Church :: Sunday,November 5, 2023
Do we judge others while thinking we’re the ones on board with God and His plans? Paul’s teachings from Romans 2:1-16 call us to think again. From Bob Short’s exposition of this passage, we see the contrasting judgment of the self-righteous to God’s righteous and impartial judgment that runs according to His schedule, our deeds, and a just standard. We are reminded too that God’s judgment withheld provides more opportunity for those under sin to repent and turn to Jesus, the one who absorbed the wrath of God on our behalf. Bob's message follows a few brief announcements.

  • Romans 1:18-32 - God's Wrath
Steve Smith :: Creekside Church :: Sunday, October 29, 2023
“…the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all…people who suppress the truth in unrighteousness…” In Pastor Steve’s message from Romans 1:18-32, Paul highlights three facts about God’s wrath (the revelation of it, the reasons for it, and the response to it) to magnify the consequences of mankind’s unbelief and to motivate toward repentance and faith in Christ. Steve’s message follows a prayer for our Haiti missions team.

  • Romans 1:16-17 - Unashamed of the Gospel
Steve Smith :: Creekside Church :: Sunday, October 22, 2023
Some things make us want to speak boldly. Why is it that for many Christians, the good news of Christ is not one of them? In Romans 1:16-17, Paul’s bold defense of the Gospel proclamation provides 2 incentives for a believer’s unapologetic announcement of justification by faith in Christ. Pastor Steve’s message reminds us that we should be bent on and bold in our proclamation—motivated by the result, the reach, and the revelation of the Gospel to us.
