2025-04-06: Pastor Mark Quist – To Love God is to Love Others – Things Indifferent: Of Conscience, Love, and Stumbling Blocks
The Apostle Paul is a master teacher. Not known however as an eloquent speaker. The core of his teaching all about the love of God and ways of Jesus. Invitations to follow, to own how God through Christ sees us. The love of God through Christ and the ways of the Holy Spirit flow through us to the world and all our relationships.
In 1st Corinthians 8 Pauls says, “Knowledge puffs up, love builds up.” Sometimes we use knowledge to destroy and humiliate others by elevating ourselves as wiser, higher and better than others. Yet, as Paul says, “Those who think they know something do not yet know as they ought to know.”
For as he says in 1 Corinthians 13, “Love isn’t self-seeking, doesn’t boast, isn’t proud… its actually kind and graceful, humble out loud.” (Mark paraphrase). A know it all posture treats others as ‘know nothings’ (Eugene Peterson paraphrase), but a love posture treats others and ‘children of God somethings’.
Reminds me of something I heard as a youth, “I don’t care how much you know until I know how much you care.” Paul, a master teacher, not known as an eloquent speaker, says it well, “If I can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge… but do not have love, I am nothing.” He emphasizes something greater than knowledge… love.
See you Sunday, 1st Corinthians 8,
Pastor Mark
