Purpose:
This podcast will aim to bring to light the way that disability is portrayed through media (mass or social) has an impact on the perceptions and attitudes of the general community of disability.
Through discussing issues that present in the day to day media cycle, we hope to create an informative, enlightening and entertaining podcast that both analyses the role of media as a vehicle for inclusion but also exploring the role of people with disabilities in either continuing old stereotypes or using media to in ways redefine how we are portrayed and in turn perceived.
Format:
A series of 1-2 hour conversations between one host and 2 or 3 guests discussing topical issues based on Australian and International Media. The podcast aims to start a conversation which will then lead to change in how people with disabilities are portrayed to society and how those portrayals perpetuate stereotypes and tropes that only foster ableism.
This podcast will be different to CripChat because it will be more long form conversations done as either live or pre-record. It will air on Monday based on the past week using an article or two to provide context to what we are discussing, also to stimulate interaction and feedback from listeners.
We should not be afraid to critic in a respectful way, the decisions by certain organisations to use disability in a commercial way to evoke pity therefore donations and by doing so they potentially harm the social model of disability that is rooted in a ‘disability’ being a societal problem more so than a medical one.
Lively debate and discussion between people with disabilities and media studies academics delivered in a way that everyday people can learn from.
