  • Episode 413 - Hon. Maxime Bernier
Maxime Bernier is known as a dependable politician who speaks his mind. A man of ideas, his belief in personal responsibility and freedom is at the heart of his political vision. In his public statements, he expresses those values and his unwavering commitment to reducing the size of government.
Maxime Bernier was born January 18, 1963, in St-Georges-de-Beauce. He is the father of two girls.
Mr. Bernier is a dedicated and experienced runner and has participated in several marathons. A tough and determined competitor, he once ran 106 km across his constituency, completing the run in 13 hours and raising $165,000 for the Beauce food bank.
In 1985, Mr. Bernier earned a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the Université du Québec à Montréal and entered Law at the University of Ottawa. He was called to the Quebec Bar in 1990.
Mr. Bernier has a long-standing interest in business and during his career worked for several financial and banking institutions before becoming Executive Vice-President of the Montreal Economic Institute in 2005.
Many people in the region encouraged him to enter politics. He took up the challenge and was elected Member of Parliament for Beauce on January 23, 2006, with the largest majority outside Alberta (he will remain MP of the constituency until 2019). He was appointed to Cabinet on February 6, 2006, as Minister of Industry.
His success in deregulating major portions of the telecommunications sector prompted the chair of the Political Science department at McGill University, Professor Richard J. Schultz, to write, “In terms of what is perhaps the single most important component of his Industry portfolio, telecommunications, he was without challenge the best Industry Minister in thirty years.”
Mr. Bernier also served as Minister of Foreign Affairs from August 14, 2007 to May 26, 2008.
He was re-elected to represent Beauce on October 14, 2008, again receiving the largest majority of all MPs in Quebec.
Re-elected on May 2, 2011, he was appointed Minister of State for Small Business and Tourism.
Maxime Bernier was re-elected a fourth time in November, 2015, receiving more than 59% of the vote.
On August 23, 2018, he left the Conservative Party of Canada to sit as an independent MP and announced the launch of a new party. Read his full statement here.

  • Episode 412 - UCP Leadership Candidate Raj Sherman
Raj Sherman, is running to be your Premier and the leader of the United Conservative Party of Alberta.
According to Sherman, "Alberta had faced major challenges with a crash in the price of oil, which has affected our economy followed by two years of Covid19, which has caused not only crises in our healthcare system, but also divisions amongst our people.
"My hope is to unite Albertans once again so that we may face any challenge together. It is time to improve our democracy and how decisions are made," Sherman added.
"We must have a smaller and smarter government. With oil prices having rebounded, it’s time we pay down the massive debt, put money in the Alberta Heritage Savings Trust Fund, and fix what is broken."

  • Episode 411 The DNA Of Great Leaders
Welcome to the Cross Border Interviews With Ian McCormack
What attributes make a good leader?
Ian McCormack has had conversations with hundreds of mayors and thousands of councillors and other local leaders over the years. While each community and its leaders are unique, some common themes emerged among those appreciated as the most effective. Investigating these themes and drilling down into the key factors that enabled them to exist revealed several key attributes held in common by these strong leaders.
In The DNA of Great Leaders, McCormack provides 25 key attributes of great leaders around three major thematic areas: personal characteristics, community leadership, and governing. Each chapter dissects a key attribute, contains examples and quotes from mayors who embody these attributes, and end with questions for reflection.
“There is arguably a growing leadership deficit at all levels of public life, and yet in my experience local democracy remains the most reliable structure for selecting and then growing authentic leadership. And so Ian McCormack’s book is timely as community leaders turned off by party politics and polarization turn to their county and town hall to try to make life better close to home. I agree with McCormack’s recurring premise that ‘The politics of local government doesn’t have to be zero sum,’ and his book describes many of the attributes and skills necessary for mayors to steer councils, municipal organizations and communities on the non-zero-sum path. More communities led in this thoughtful way would add up to stronger communities, a stronger country, and a timely antidote to the politics of division we see around us.”
Don Iveson, Edmonton Mayor 2013-2021, current Canadian Urban Leader at the University of Toronto School of Cities.
