Money has a unique way of revealing what we truly treasure, and the story of the rich young ruler in Matthew 19 makes that uncomfortably clear. A young man who was successful, respected, and genuinely concerned about eternity came to Jesus asking the right question but with the wrong framework. He wanted eternal life on his own terms, believing his moral record was enough. Jesus, out of love, exposed the idol hiding in his heart by asking him to surrender the one thing he valued most. The man walked away sorrowful, choosing his possessions over the Person standing right in front of him. True faith does not simply admire Christ from a distance. It treasures Him above everything else and surrenders every rival to His lordship. The question worth sitting with is this: what are you unwilling to lose in order to have Christ?

Romans 16 is far more than a closing list of names. It is a picture of how God designed His people to live in genuine relationship with one another. From the very beginning, God made clear that isolation was never His plan for humanity. Every believer needs people who will support them, people who will stand with them, and people who will serve alongside them. Phoebe, Prisca, Aquila, and the many others Paul greets were not footnotes. They were faithful men and women whose relationships shaped the spread of the gospel. You were not saved to live in isolation. God placed you in a local body of believers on purpose, for your good and for His glory.

Second Corinthians 11:21-33 turns the world’s idea of strength upside down. While false teachers boasted about their accomplishments and abilities, the Apostle Paul pointed to his suffering, limitations, and dependence on others as evidence of God’s faithfulness. Even his escape from Damascus—being lowered through a window in a basket—showed that God often provides strength through the help of fellow believers. Paul learned that weakness is not something to conceal or overcome through self-reliance; it is an opportunity to depend more fully on Christ. The church is not a collection of self-sufficient people, but a body of weak believers who receive strength from God and support one another. You do not need an impressive story to have a faithful testimony. Sometimes the strongest testimony is simply this: “I was weak, but God did not abandon me.”

Romans 15:30-33 reveals something that many believers overlook: those who preach and teach God's Word desperately need the prayers of God's people. The Apostle Paul made a continuous, urgent appeal to the church in Rome, asking them to strive together with him in prayer. He grounded this appeal in their shared identity in Christ and in the work of the triune God. Paul did not ask for vague, general prayers. He gave specific requests covering his protection, his effectiveness in ministry, and his need for refreshment and fellowship. God answered those prayers, though not always in the way Paul expected. He was delivered, the offering was accepted, and he reached Rome, but through arrest, shipwreck, and house arrest rather than a triumphant visit. The lesson is clear: pray specifically for those who shepherd you, and trust God's sovereignty when His answers look different than you anticipated.

Every believer is called to be a minister of the gospel, not just pastors or apostles. Drawing from Paul's travel plans in Romans 15, four marks of a faithful minister come into focus: a genuine desire for fellowship with God's people, devotion to proclaiming the gospel, joyful fulfillment of obligations to others, and complete dependence on Christ for any fruit that comes. Paul's life demonstrated that time is not ours to spend however we please. It is a gift from God, given for His purposes. The question for every believer is whether their time, resources, and relationships are being used for God's glory or their own comfort.

Many Christians treat the gospel as a starting point, something to move past once they are saved. But the gospel is not just the entry point to faith. It is the foundation of the entire Christian life. Because of sin, we stood condemned before a holy God, but Jesus Christ lived a sinless life, died on the cross in our place, and rose from the dead. Those who trust in Him receive forgiveness, acceptance, joy, and eternal life. The gospel is the only message that produces genuine maturity, the only message that has ever brought people to Christ, and the only message that ever will. We cannot outgrow it. We need it every single day.
