What if the government will permanently lock us down? What if the church buildings will not be opened? What if no one gives tithes and offerings anymore? What if we can’t fellowship and sing together physically anymore? Are we gonna be under China now? What will the pastors and ministers eat? I have no idea. All I know is that I need to go back to the Bible and see what God has to say. We ask real and honest questions and we go back to the Word of GOD – always – and search for answers from heaven’s publications. What if, what if, what if.”

Yup, you heard me, a friend of mine, pastoring in Cebu, and also a newly wed will share to us something practical: his experience, principles and tips on pursuing the love of your life while delighting in the Lord. Just before the covid-19 pandemic hits the global landscape, this guy got married, packed his bags from bacolod and carried his cross, plus his wife (which they say are identical themes) to Cebu for his calling as a discipler and shepherd - right there in the Queen City of the South.

We who preach the gospel must not think of ourselves as public relations agents sent to establish good will between Christ and the world. We must not imagine ourselves commissioned to make Christ acceptable to big business, the press, the world of sports or modern education. We are not diplomats but prophets, and our message is not a compromise but an ultimatum.

God offers life, but not an improved old life. The life He offers is life out of death. It stands always on the far side of the cross. Whoever would possess it must pass under the rod. He must repudiate himself and concur in God's just sentence against him.”

“If anyone would come after me,” Jesus boldly preached. “Let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.” (Luke 9:23) Following Jesus means taking up my cross daily; and the secret to taking up my cross is counting my “self” as nothing. In the context of the cross, my greatest enemy is my self.

“Theology matters.

Proper doctrine is crucial. The Scriptures first and foremost is profitable for doctrine before it can even be practiced or lived out. Proper theology, in truth and in grace, as rooted in the the proper handling of Scriptures, shapes the entirety of a man’s life, making him “complete, equipped for every good work” (2 Tim. 3:16-17). Thus, Jesus was indeed clear when He declared that the Word of God is Truth. And this Truth sanctifies His people (John 17:17). Theology shapes the whole man; Truth is for Life. Your life and influence will very much depend on the very truth you stand on and enjoy. Go back to the Bible and then do not go anywhere else.”

The church is having some difficulty breathing. She is choked by the world thinking that the world is her Lord and Savior: something that Satan has far too long lured her from the very beginning. Satan tried to lure Jesus into kneeling and bowing down to him and promised him the whole world, and Jesus rebuked the devil. How? He held on to the Word. Our Lord knew where the battle lines are drawn. The moment the church bows down to the world, that’s where our downfall begins.

Chapters 3 & 4 of Paul’s second epistle to Timothy are the last known chapters that the apostle Paul wrote before he died. In it, we see Paul’s crucial words, given to his disciple Timothy and also echoing towards us who are leaders, pastors, ministers, or simply members in the church. Take note, Paul writes here, that the last days will be marked by a great deluge of worldliness: the people will do everything out of their love for the world and will do almost anything to disregard the Word.

About to be poured out as a drink offering, Paul shares his final moments writing for his disciple Timothy to come to him. Here, he writes his sharp words, a charge not only to Timothy but to all the ministers and leaders in the church to seriously - preach the Word. While the world is going from bad to worse, Timothy is charged to live a godly life through being serious in living for and equipping the church with His God-breathed Word - not for the entertainment of the goats’ itching ears but to feed Christ’s sheep. Even when everybody would love to be tickled for entertainment, the pastor should know that his primary job is a life-and-death call to rightly divide the Word of Truth as the sanctifying agent of the church and nothing else.

Paul understood very well that in ministry, people will desert you and leave you behind because you will have contrasting loves. Today, meet Demas. See how both he and Paul parted ways in one of the most painful of all departures: one left for the world, one for the Word.

This is why Paul longed for Timothy’s companionship and also because he wanted to charge Timothy with something very important, something to warn this young pastor to not go where Demas went, to preach the Word more than anything else - in fashion or out of fashion.

We are living in perilous times. In fact, the apostle Paul, on his last letter (his last written words), gave an imagery of what the world will look like “in the last days” (2 Tim.3): it will be times of difficulty (v.1), believers will be persecuted as they choose to live in godliness (v.12) and everyone will go on from bad to worse. What was Paul’s final charge to his beloved disciple and son in the faith? This same charge to Timothy by Paul is the very same charge of God towards His church.
