WANTED: IMPERFECT MEN TO BE DEACONS

ACTS 6:1-7

The 8,000-member early church at Jerusalem had experienced a phenomenal explosion in changed lives and the longing of the newly saved to serve Jesus. Yet, the early church encountered problems that were pulling the Apostles away from their priorities of preaching, teaching, and prayer. This passage covers their solution and the solution we use today – deacons. What was the purpose of deacons, and what were their qualifications?

JONAH: CHOICES AND CONSEQUENCES

JONAH 1:1-13

Choices have consequences. We are free to make our choices, but we don’t get to choose the consequences of those choices. We have the choice to obey or disobey God’s commands and His call on our life. It has been estimated that 99% of the time, obedience starts with pain or discomfort in some form. Yet the final result of obedience is peace. In this passage, God called Jonah personally to a particular place, at a particular time, for a particular purpose. With God, one man can make a difference in the course of a nation. Jonah opted to disobey. Today we look at his choice and the consequences he faced.

JAMES 1:19-27

No one wants to be seen as a failure. But what is true success? There are some questions we each need to consider: (1) Who determines if you are successful? (2)How is real success measured? (3) Are you successful at the right things? (4)Would your family consider you a success at home? (5) Would your coworkers label you a success at work regardless of your position. title, or paygrade? (6) Most importantly, does Jesus regard you as successful? From James 1, Rob teaches some hallmarks of true success from God’s perspective.

OUR ONLY HOPE IS YOU, JESUS

PSALM 33

When you think about it, it is incredible how much of a miracle America really is. Patrick Henry said, “It cannot be emphasized too strongly or too often that this great nation was founded not by religionists, but by Christians. Of the 61 signers of the Declaration of Independence, 27 had seminary degrees. Eight days after signing the Declaration of Independence, printed on the side of the Liberty Bell, was this quote from Leviticus 25:10: “Proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof.” George Washington said, “It would be impossible to govern rightly without God and the Bible.”

There are those today who diametrically oppose the thinking and intent of the founding fathers and are working to change the country, potentially destroying the freedoms we have treasured. Psalm 33 teaches us where our hope should rest.

DINING AT THE TABLE OF DISAPPOINTMENT

2 CORINTHIANS 12:7-10

How we respond to disappointments determines God’s freedom to use us as well as our ability to thrive in a fallen world. How we respond determines whether we sink or soar. Someone has said that behind the most radiant lives are often the most bitter trials. Don’t waste your disappointments! In this passage, Paul encounters a disappointment that he embraces. MEMORIAL DAY 2022

ROMANS 1:18-32

Why do we have Memorial Day? Memorials mean something and are a way of teaching history. The Hebrews had memorials to help them remember and to help them teach the next generation what God had done for them in the past. In the United States, Memorial Day is to remember those who have died for our freedom. It is a time to reflect on the high price of freedom, why it is so valuable, and what we need to do to continue to live free under God’s hand of blessing.
