How we understand the nature of the new covenant significantly impacts how we understand the church. As Christians, we need to understand what a church is and what our responsibilities are as members of Christ's church.

The author of Hebrews appeals to Jeremiah's promise of the new covenant to build his argument for the superiority of Christ. Jesus mediates the new covenant which is better than the old. In the new covenant, every covenant member has the law written on the heart, knows the Lord, and has the forgiveness of sins.

The point of Hebrews is quite simple: Jesus is better. Hebrews 8 points us to the superior ministry of our new covenant priest. He ministers on our behalf in the true tabernacle, not the shadowy one.

The final three verses of Hebrews 7 drive home the author's argument for the superiority of Christ's Melchizedekian priesthood over the Levitical priesthood. Jesus is a perfect priest that offered a sufficient sacrifice. He rose from the dead making him a priest forever and able to secure eternal redemption.

The Levitical priesthood was incapable of achieving perfection. Jesus' priesthood however is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him. Jesus' high priesthood has fulfilled the law of Moses and guarantees the new covenant.

In Hebrews 7, we learn about the Melchizedekian priesthood of Christ and why it is superior to the Levitical priesthood. Only through Christ's superior priesthood are we able to draw near to God with full forgiveness of sins.

After issuing a severe warning about the danger of apostasy, the author of Hebrews encourages his readers by reminding them of the certainty of God's promises. All who are patient and faithful will inherit the full realization of God's promises because God does not lie and his word does not change

One of the most difficult warning passages in the New Testament is found in Hebrews 6:1–12. Some think this text teaches that people can lose their salvation. Others think the loss is merely rewards. A closer look will reveal that the warning is a means to keep Christians persevering so that no true believer will be lost on the final day.

The author of Hebrews chastises his readers for their spiritual immaturity. They should have been teaching others the truths of the gospel, but instead needed someone to teach them the basics. As Christians, we should all aspire to progress in our understanding of the gospel, and in Christian maturity.

Jesus endured the miseries of human life with full trust in God. He embraced suffering in obedience to God and trusted that God would deliver him out of death. Because of his obedience, Jesus qualified for the office of a permanent high priesthood which he received upon his resurrection. He is therefore the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him.
