To celebrate February as African American History Month,  The African American Historical Society (AAHS) of Rockland County is teaming up with Rockland Community College to present the special program “A Glimpse of the Harlem Renaissance.” Clare Sheridan's special guest will be AAHS Trustee Dana Stilley, who will talk about this special theatrical experience highlighting the people, art, music, philosophy, and dances of a unique and influential era in American history. 

Ms. Stilley also describes other events and programs the AAHS of Rockland County has been working on and what else is ahead for this dynamic organization.

Remembering a Unique Talent and a Life Cut Short. Norbert Stern, a Jew in Nazi-held Belgium, was a young pianist acclaimed in the press as brilliant and full of promise. In 1942, as conditions worsened for the Jews, Norbert was compelled to leave the Brussels Conservatory of Music where he had been a premier student winning a series of prestigious competitions. Soon thereafter he and his family were forced to go into hiding and hoped to wait out the war. But this was not to be. Two years later the Sterns were denounced and their hiding place discovered. The family was deported to Auschwitz concentration camp and it was there, not long after, that Norbert met his death at 21 years old. In this interview, Clare Sheridan speaks to Roger Peltzman, nephew of Norbert Stern. The interview explores Peltzman's tribute to a brilliant performer the world would never know. Peltzman has recorded a CD, which is an all-Chopin program, chosen to commemorate Norbert Stern's particular love, and was recorded in the Brussels Conservatory of Music on the same stage where Norbert himself had played. The Conservatory is a beautiful and acoustically rich concert hall and with its intimate connection to Norbert Stern was chosen as the most meaningful place to commemorate a young life lost and a talent tragically destroyed. Roger Peltzman is a pianist and teacher in New York City. He has performed six solo concerts at Weill Hall at Carnegie Hall during the last 12 years. Clare Sheridan interviewed guests including Ned Kelly, guest curator of the holiday exhibition; Joy Hoerner Rich and Karen Tolley, co-authors of Berta and Elmer Hader: A Lifetime of Art and Jack Geist, son of Lucy Geist who was the creator of the popular LUCY doll.

This episode shed light on the HSRC's 38th annual holiday exhibition. For the first time, the Hudson Valley taste makers Ned Kelly & Co. collaborated with the Historical Society by curating a show of highlights of the Society’s permanent collection and by decorating the historic Jacob Blauvelt House with their “perfect pitch taste.” Kelly described what it was like to peruse the shelves of the HSRC collection and select items for display. Highlights of Kelly’s selections include original linocut prints created by Berta and Elmer Hader. As a special addition to this broadcast, Clare Sheridan welcomed Joy Hoerner Rich and Karen Tolley, two of the authors of the new book about Berta and Elmer Hader. Berta and Elmer Hader: A Lifetime of Art, published by Joyful Productions, which was released in October, 2013. The full-color book is a comprehensive look at these Caldecott Award-winning authors/illustrators. Finally, Jack Geist spoke with Clare about his mother, Lucy Geist, of Nyack, the creator of "Lucy" ragdolls popular with children in Rockland County in the 1970s. Both the Hader Prints and the Lucy Dolls were part of the exhibition.

Interview with Retired Justice Alfred Weiner to discuss the history of the Rockland County Courthouse and the history of the Judiciary.

Former Justice Alfred J. Weiner joins Clare Sheridan for an informative and interesting program on the history of the Rockland County Courthouse and the Rockland County Judiciary. Justice Weiner was a Justice of the New York State Supreme Court, Ninth Judicial District, and served for more than forty years on the bench before retiring in 2011. Throughout his career, he has also volunteered extensively in the Rockland community. He is a founder and present member of the Board of Directors of Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Rockland County; a past president of the Rockland Mental Health Association and of the Rockland Psychiatric Center Foundation; a past president and present member of the Board of Trustees of the Rockland Jewish Family Service; and a past president of the Historical Society of Rockland County. He is currently of-counsel to the law firm Mandel, Katz & Brosnan LLP in Valley Cottage, where he practices mediation/arbitration of divorce, family, estate, commercial and insurance disputes.

Rockland County has a strong connection to the event that brought avant-garde art to New York in 1913 - The Armory Show. Clare Sheridan interviews Marilyn Kushner about the the importance of the Armory show and the roles that Rocklanders played in organizing the original Armory exhibition. Marilyn Kushner, PhD is co-curator of the exhibition at the New York Historical Society entitled: The Armory Show at 100.

In addition to being the co-curator of this exhibition, Dr. Marilyn Kushner is Curator and Head of the Department of Prints, Photographs and Architectural Collections at the New York Historical Society in Manhattan. Her Co-Curator for the Armory Show at 100 is Kimberly Orcutt, Curator of American Art at the Henry Luce Foundation.
The 1913 Armory Show, held in New York City, introduced the American public to European avant-garde painting and sculpture and the public sensation and the responses to the show represented a watershed in the history of American art. The 1913 Armory exhibition included works by such well-known European modernists as Paul Cezanne, Marcel Duchamp, Pablo Picasso and Paul Gauguin, as well as leaders of American art such as Davies, Childe Hassam, along with the early work by such budding modernists as Charles Sheeler, Marsden Hartley and Stuart Davis.

100th Anniversary of the Group Camps in Harriman State Park.  Sue Scher joined Clare Sheridan to talk about the Historical Society of Rockland County's (HSRC) exhibition commemorating the centennial milestone.  Sue Scher is professor emerita of Social Work, Ramapo College and has curated this exhibition at the HSRC. Ms. Scher's valuable insights and knowledge about these camps has come from her 10-year effort to collect information, photographs and memorabilia about the camps in Harriman State Park.

This radio program will be a prelude to The Historical Society’s special live musical presentation entitled:  The Big Squeeze – An Accordion Summit, which will be held on April 28, 2013 at the Nyack Library at 3:00pm.  This traditional musical summit, made possible by a grant from the NY State Council on the Arts, will showcase three of Rockland County’s traditional accordion styles:  Irish, Ukrainian and Mexican Norteno.
