A new National Guard force that would react to incidents of civil unrest is allegedly being considered. The Washington Post alleges that unreleased documents propose a new “Domestic Civil Disturbance Quick Reaction Force.” The alleged proposal appears to follow a similar model to the deployment of the National Guard to respond to recent riots in Los Angeles and the new deployments in Washington to quell crime in the nation’s capital.

The District of Columbia is now under federal control. National Guard troops are being deployed to help secure its streets, and its police department will likewise be under federal control. The move was announced by President Donald Trump, who has invoked the Home Rule Act of 1973, in an action he says is meant to make Washington “safe and beautiful.”
