We tend to take what someone says at face value. What they say is what they mean, right? We even do this with the words of Jesus. When he said, “Love your neighbor”, he must mean to love the guy next door. When he said, “Today, you will be with me in paradise,” he must have meant this actual day we’ll meet in Hawaii or Barbados. But in truth, we often misinterpret Jesus’ teaching because we don’t understand his ancient Jewish culture. While Jesus’ listeners easily understood his references, much of the underlying meanings can get lost in translation for us. In this series, we’ll teach you five cultural understandings that will unlock Jesus’ teaching, and help you find the answer to a question you’re having, the solution for a conflict you’re in, or some guidance in whatever challenge you’re facing.
