“I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy.” (Exodus 33:19) Among all the truths that we can infer from this passage, the independence of God is one of His clearest communicated attributes. While countless questions have been raised on God’s independence in showing mercy, this is the one assurance that despite their own sinfulness, believers are assured of their salvation. Lot’s character in the book of Genesis is rather conflicting. On one end, he was different from Sodom. On the other end, he did not just display some characteristics of Sodom but an attachment to it. However, what secured his salvation, as opposed to the rest of his family, was God’s Sovereign choice to show him mercy.
