  • Episode 227 - CoronaToken, Justin Sun Drama, OkEx - Binance Beef!

Welcome to the very first re-branded episode of Crypto Basic News! It's basically Flagship Friday, but without the Friday part. Blame our lazy editor for that. Just kidding, he's the best and we love him very much.

This time around we talk about Justin Sun's new drama with Steemit, about the new CoronaToken (who would've thought...), about CZ's twitter beef with the CEO of OkEx and more. Tune in now!

    • Don’t have the legal status of currency or money;

    • Chiliz also partnering with Dota2 squad OG to launch a fan token on socios.com.
    • You may soon be able to buy a stake in a professional athlete's tokenized contracts
    • NBA star Spencer Dinwiddie has announced a partnership with a new broker-dealer to help issue shares in his tokenized contract. His platform, Dream Fan Shares (DFS).
    • The NBA has remained quiet on whether they will continue to oppose Dinwiddie’s venture.
    • Dinwiddie is prepared to move forward without the NBA's blessing and said investors can expect more details soon.
    • Do you like this idea? Good or bad?
    • Dinwiddie first announced plans in September to issue the first Professional Athlete Investment Token (PAinT), which would tokenize $13 million of his guaranteed $34 million NBA contract. The Ethereum-based “SD8” token, now called “SD26,” would allow him to earn cash upfront from investors and repay them with interest. The token’s name change appears to coincide with Dinwiddie's decision last month to change his uniform number from 8 to 26 in honor of the late Kobe Bryant.
    • he would offer the token as a three-year bond which would pay out a base interest of 4.95% on a monthly basis. Furthermore, if all 90 tokens—with a minimum buy-in of $150,000—were sold, the group of investors would stand to collectively earn $2 million in profits.
    • CoronaVirus
    • Someone made a CoronaToken because crypto.
    • Back by Proof of Death LOL
    • someone at 4-chan developed it.
    • only available on the Saturn network which is basically a d-list exchange allegedly decentralized.
    • Please wash your hands. Do we think the hype is overblown? How will it shape crypto? Fiat? gold? the market? I just feel like this is too big of an impact to not mention it at all. So far Ultra, SXSW, GDC, and now Bitcoin 2020 has been canceled. Im sure there are plenty others but just dont go to a big event.
    • The Fed is Quarantining Some Cash to fight CoronaVirus
    • Justin Sun Drama With Steemit
    • Justin Sun has seized control of the Steem blockchain – with the apparent help of several prominent crypto exchanges.
    • This is still ongoing, but here's a recap of how the Steem blockchain works
    • Justin also bought steemit, which was just an app on top of the steem blockchain. It didn't make much sense to buy that I remember thinking.
    • Explain powering up
    • Well, Steemit had a TON of tokens locked up that could, apparently, be released and then used to vote for new Witnesses.
    • Steem blockchain had witnesses soft fork to remove the voting power of all of the tokens that sun just acquired.
    • This would essentially limit Justin's power, but Justin reached out to exchanges and got their cooperation to "restore order" and return the blockchain to it's original state.
    • The exchanges cooperated, but in order to stake your tokens and get a vote you need to "power up" which means you need to power down to move your tokens. Powering down takes 13 weeks.
    • "For the next 4-6 weeks, the Steemit team will be using the voting rights to resume the order of the community while having an open channel for meeting community members and Witnesses."
    • Now the Steem community has been trying to brick the voting power of Steemit for some time, and it hasn't succeeded in a hard fork.
    • There are about 210 Steem power in existence at the time of the writing for coindesk - 68M might be controlled by the Steemit chain
    • Beef Between Binance CEO CZ and OkEx CEO After Unschedule Maintanance
    • On Mar. 4, Binance announced that it has initiated unscheduled system maintenance. The work on the exchange’s infrastructure was completed by press time.
    • As a result of the maintenance, Binance “suspended deposits, withdrawals, spot trading, margin trading, P2P trading, lending, redemption, as well as asset transfers from sub-accounts, margin accounts, futures accounts, and fiat wallets.” Futures trading, on the other hand, continued as usual.
    • A tweet sent by Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao explained that the sudden need for maintenance was caused by a message broker malfunction. Jay Hao, CEO of competing crypto exchange OKEx, answered to the tweet:
“Hey CZ, technically Kafka is a message queue system for log, it's not enough for trading system thus the broker problem will always occur. Need help?”
    • CZ immediately blocked him on Twitter.
    • In February, Binance users had to endure interface errors and trading API timeouts because of the middle-layer service being overloaded. Furthermore, some exchange’s customers were unable to have their orders carried out also often retried right away, resulting in overloading Binance’s infrastructure even further. February 19th there was also unscheduled maintance on Binance as well. Clearly, Binance is having some issues lately. Hopefully CZ rights the ship.

    • Which predicts avg BTC/USD to be around $100k between 2021-2024
    • Got me interested, especially since we dont often discuss price prediction, and apparently its a popular valuation model.
    • Bitcoin Stock-to-Flow model was published first in March 2019, and it essentially treats BTC like gold, silver, or platinum.
    • Stock-to-flow ratios are used to evaluate the current stock of a commodity (total amount currently available) against the flow of new production (amount mined that specific year).
    • S2F really seems to be a measure of scarcity,
    • Gold has the highest stock-to-flow ratio with 62, as it would take 62 years of production to reach the current level of gold stock.
    • Silver has a ratio of 22, while Bitcoin is currently at 27
    • Of course this also draws a lot of criticism, how can we just use supply to try to predict price?
    • Joe Weisenthal (bloomberg markets editor) makes the point that if you wanted more btc you could just bid it up rn, without extra supply or less supply
    • "If you believe that there's some mathematical relationship between the supply of new coins and the price of the coins, then you have to explain how the supply of new coins changes peoples preferences to hold BTC within global porfolio."
    • It also doesnt account for demand-side shocks....What if nobody wants to hold bitcoin in the long run?
    • But has been realtively accurate so far, seems to not consider demand which may be just luck with BTC but wouldn apply to something else, or just works till it doesnt and it breaks down

    • A season is three months, so we looked at the performance of all Top 50 Coins over the last 90 days. The more Altcoins are up against BTC, the higher the Altcoin Season Index. If 75% of all Altcoins are up against Bitcoin over the last 3 months, it's Altcoin Season!
    • And to spoil it for the listeners, no, no it is not alt season yet. The heat index is currently at a 51.
    • Hey Telegram, you're crypto is worth less than donuts (CoinTelegraph)
    • In the memo, the SEC included a few barbs against the instant messenger service. It called out Telegram for doing “a two-step around the registration provisions” and performing “sleight of hand” by fabricating the difference between a purchaser’s investment in Grams and their delivery of the Grams, which would allow them to withhold info normally in regulatory statements. Pavel Durov’s creation, the document contends, gave a “strawman” argument about “existence” since “Grams will never be tangible.” The SEC put the frosting on when it wrote:
“Telegram’s attempt to avoid this economic truth by labelling Grams ‘commodities’ also fails. Grams are not commodities. Unlike gold, comic books, and Krispy Kreme donuts — commodities Telegram compares to Grams — Grams have no intrinsic value.”
    • Art project uses Ethereum to validate their art pieces

This is a major step forward in the art world where forgery is a growing and expensive problem.”

    • Bitcoin Jesus (aka Roger Ver) Caves as Fight Over Fourth-Biggest Coin Heats Up (Bloomberg)
    • On Jan. 22, a group of key Bitcoin Cash supporters proposed changing the cryptocurrency’s computer code to temporarily direct 12.5% of all newly issued coins to fund technology development -- an idea that irked many purists who prefer the typical decentralized governance of most cryptocurrencies.
    • The proposal had a high chance of passing, though, as companies advocating for the change controlled a third of computing power used to support the network of the Bitcoin offshoot in the past week, according to data tracker Coin Dance.
    • “will not go through with supporting any plan unless there is more agreement in the ecosystem.” The mining operation said it will work to come up with an alternative plan “which preserves the fundamental economics of Bitcoin Cash.”
    • Bitcoin Cash still likely has to do something to prop up its developer ecosystem. The average number of developers working each month on Bitcoin Cash-related projects declined 32% in the first half of 2019 from the previous six months, according to Electric Capital. The project lost the most developers of all other top cryptocurrencies.

It launched the first regulated bitcoin options contract on Dec 9th and while it saw over $1mill worth of bitcoin options in it's first four weeks.
    • Solid numbers initially but when compared to the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, it's pretty weak. Their first day of bitcoin options was $2.3mill

    • Bill Proposed For You To Only Pay Taxes On Profits Over $200 - B
    • So this bill would say that transactions would not be subject to gains unless it's over that amount. Apparently 95% of transactions on chain would fall into this category.
    • Bill was introduced in the House of representatives.
    • It's long and confusing, and there was a top post on Reddit even saying that this would re-classify crypto into currency and make it worse for tax reasons, but this isn't the case.
    • It simply creates one more exemption that says that these transactions that result in $200 or less profit, are fine.
    • Right now, if I were to buy 1 bag of coffee from you every month with my Bitcoin, it would create tax issues for you, and me. That's not the case with money, so it's a step in the right direction.
    • Peter Schiff is an idiot, but we can learn from it. - B
    • Step 1
    • I just lost all the #Bitcoin I have ever owned. My wallet got corrupted somehow and my password is no longer valid. So now not only is my Bitcoin intrinsically worthless; it has no market value either. I knew owning Bitcoin was a bad idea, I just never realized it was this bad!
    • Step 2
    • Since all the Bitcoin in my corrupted wallet were gifted to me, it's not that great a tragedy for me that they're lost. "Easy come, easy go," is especially true for #Bitcoin. My plan was to HODL and go down with the ship anyway. The difference is that my ship sank before Bitcoin.
    • Step 3
    • So much fake news about how I forgot my wallet password. Can't #Bitcoin pumpers be honest about anything? I was very clear that I didn't forget my password. My wallet no longer recognizes my correct password. Plus what's up with over 3K people liking that I lost my Bitcoin?
    • Step 4
    • Had I actually forgotten the password to my #Bitcoin wallet it would be OK as I would eventually remember it, or figure it out by trial & error. But since I know my password and it doesn't work, there’s no way to guess a new random password that may or may not unlock my wallet.
    • Step 5
    • My #Bitcoin mystery is solved. I mistook my pin for my password. When Blockchain updated their app I got logged out. I tired logging back in using my pin, which was the only "password" I had ever known or used. I also never had a copy of my seed phrase. Honest but costly mistake!
    • Step 6
    • To clarify my last tweet I was not able to recover my #Bitcoin. Since I never actually knew my password, just the pin, and never had a copy of my seed phrase, I have no way to recover the Bitcoin. So the problem was not a corrupted wallet, but my confusing a pin for a password.
    • Step 7
    • A lot of people are making fun of me for confusing my pin with my password. I made a mistake and it cost me my #Bitcoin. But confusing Bitcoin for money is a much larger mistake and those who are making it will lose far more than I did!
    • Canada Getting On Board with "Not your keys, not your bitcoin" - B
    • The CSA has released a notice that they intend to propose the elimination of internal ledgers.
    • This means that exchanges that do this internal ledger practice need to register as Securities with the CSA .
    • There are definite repercussions here. If they aren't holding funds, then money laundering becomes easy and can be done without the exchange knowledge.
    • This can't be done on chain with BTC so would require solutions. If it goes into effect, their exchanges would essentially need to shut down.

    • Luxury giant Kering certifies its watches with Bitcoin.Ulysee Nardin, the Swiss watchmaker behind Kering, is using blockchain to certify the authenticity of it's watch.
    • The idea is that the watchmaker will log each watch on the blockchain, meaning owners can rest in the knowledge that they have a one of a kind timepiece. It also means that they won't be swindled, and sold a fake.
    • Once bought from Ulysee Nardin, a customer will receive a PDF that contains all the information about the watch, such as the serial number, model, and warranty information. With that, the customer can trace the watch on the Bitcoin blockchain's immutable ledger. This will be handy when selling the watch, as this information can be used to certify the watch's authenticity, as well as its maintenance history.
