CryptoLogic Radio – Episode 42 – Dr. John Bindernagel, B.S.A., MS, Ph.D

This week our guest is Dr. John Bindernagel, a professional wildlife biologist who has been studying the subject of Sasquatch in North America since 1963. He lives on Vancouver Island, British Columbia. His interest in this animal began in 1963 when, as a third year student in wildlife management at the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada, he was laughed at for raising the report of an animal described as an "ape-man" for possible discussion. Dr. Bindernagel’s field work began in 1975 when his family moved to British Columbia, partly in order for him to begin field work on this species. In 1988, he and his wife found several Sasquatch tracks in good condition in the mountains not far from their home on Vancouver Island. Plaster casts which they made from these tracks provided their first physical evidence for the existence of the Sasquatch. Dr. Bindernagel has stated that he is satisfied that the Sasquatch is an extant animal, subject to study and examination like any other large mammal, and he’s much more concerned with addressing ecological questions such as how it overwinters in the colder regions of North America, than with dwelling on the controversy of whether it does or does not exist. He remains aware, however, that many people—including his scientific colleagues—remain unaware of the information that exists about this species.

Benjamin Radford, M.Ed., is a scientific paranormal investigator, a research fellow at the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry, and deputy editor of the Skeptical Inquirer. He has authored, coauthored, or contributed to twenty books and written over a thousand articles and columns on a wide variety of topics including skepticism, critical thinking, science literacy, media literacy, urban legends, unexplained mysteries, the paranormal, and mass hysteria. Radford characterizes himself as one of the world's few science-based paranormal investigators, and has done first-hand research into such subjects as psychics, ghosts, exorcisms, miracles, Bigfoot, stigmata, lake monsters, UFO sightings, reincarnation, crop circles, and many other topics. Radford is also a columnist for Discovery News and LiveScience.com. Join us as we discuss skepticism, critical thinking, and scientific inquiry with Ben as it pertains to cryptids and a number of other topics.

Tonight our guest is eyewitness turned researcher, Todd Neiss. He is an active duty staff sergeant in the Oregon National Guard and an Iraq War veteran. His eye witness encounter actually occurred while on high explosives training for his combat engineering battalion in the rain forest of Oregon’s coast range in 1993. And the sighting was corroborated by three fellow soldiers who had witnessed the creatures as well. Over the next 20+ years Todd would use his training and experience to research these creatures. Tonight we’ll be discussing the upcoming documentary movie about Ohio’s Minerva Monster with director Seth Breedlove, producers Jesse Morgan and Alan Megargle, and the head of the Ohio based Genoskwa Project, researcher Paul Hayes.

In August of 1978 a small town in eastern Ohio was thrust into the spotlight when a local family sighted a “monster” in the woods behind their home. Over subsequent evenings they were repeatedly visited by the creature culminating in a late-night encounter that ended in local police being called in. The story blasted onto the front pages of newspapers across the state and into the consciousness of a nation. For weeks police, news crews, and scores of hunters descended on the town of Minerva with one common goal; to find the beast.

Now, nearly 36 years later, the Minerva Monster will be unveiled once again. Featuring in-depth interviews with law enforcement, media personnel and witnesses, Minerva Monster aims to retell the Cayton’s story as it never has been before. Against the backdrop of small-town America a myth will become reality.

The documentary film is directed by Seth Breedlove, and produced by Jesse Morgan and Alan Megargle. Minerva Monster is the first in a series of documentaries called Small Town Monsters. Setting aside all the drama, and preamble of previous “monster” documentaries, Minerva Monster will tell the story through witness interviews; the real story, in the words of those who lived it.

The film will see an official release on May 16th at the Ohio Bigfoot Conference and be available for purchase on or around this same date. Local screenings will follow.
