Does it really take MILLIONS of dollars to get a blockchain project off the ground? These bright young entrepreneurs from Germany don't think so. We discuss the fundamentals of "boot strapping"crypto projects and challenging the idea ICOs are ALWAYS required.
Listen to the podcast in full and learn how the world of web development can be disrupted by some very smart German students!

The ProblemHate speech, duplicate question, and unnecessary roughness lower the quality of conversations on the internet.
Especially on developer discussion platforms, this results in many non-deferential conversations missing their goal.
The Solution A rewarding Q&A Portal:A questioner will be able to set a DVN tip reward on his question. Whoever gives the best and detailed answer (determined by the questioner and the community) receives the tip.
Profit over Time:If someone has a question that already has been answered before, he can tip the answer. The person who delivered the helpful answer and the person who initially created the question both receive 2/5 of the tip.
Supporting new Users:New users will receive an initial registration bonus in DVN out of the platform pool. To keep the pool up, a share of a tip will go into the pool.
Preventing duplicate questions:They will set up an intuitive search function to prevent duplicate questions. Already created questions should receive the whole attention to possibly receive more and more tips over time.
Which exchanges are they listed on?We spoke to DVN Project and asked them for some extra information that might not be on the site. They told us:
What are the next steps:
- We are building a separate “VIP” Slack community for the part of the DVN community that is interested and supports our project idea.
- Starting next week we will develop a One-Pager (together with the community in Slack) as a Teaser for the Whitepaper.
- Furthermore, we will build the DVN platform with core features and then develop the advanced features together with the DVN community.
Project background:
- We are 3 informatics students in Germany (all finished Bachelor’s degree)
- The idea resulted in our of our daily work with Developer portals like Stackoverflow.
- The project is non funded. We try to make this work without external initial investments.

This guide is not legal advice; for that, please consult a tax professional.
Adrian Markey is a chartered accountant and crypto tax specialist based in Northern Ireland. His firm was shortlisted for Best New Firm at Practice Excellence 2017, which awards the top accountancy firms in the UK. - https://cryptotax.uk/
The main thing to remember is to keep records!
Here are some common positions you may find yourself in:
When you buy bitcoin or cryptocurrency, nothing is expected of you at point of sale. However, you will need a record of the price you bought it at to calculate taxes when you sell it in the future.
For future tax purposes, make a note of the value of the gift on the date of the gift.
The tax that you might be liable for in this instance is Capital Gains Tax (CGT) – a tax on the profit that is made when you sell something that has increased in value. If tax is due it is only on the gain that you have made, not the entire amount you receive from the sale. This is why keeping records of the purchase value of your cryptocurrency is important. You can also include transaction costs such as transfer fees when calculating your gain.
The annual tax-free allowance for an individual’s asset gains is £11,300 for 2017/18. So if the profit from selling your cryptocurrency, in addition to any other asset gains, is less than this, you won’t have to report or pay tax on it.
However, if you sell up to four times the annual allowance (£45,200 for 2017/18) of crypto-assets, even if you make a profit of less than £11,300, you have to report this sale to HMRC. You can do this either by registering and reporting through Self Assessment, or by writing to them at:
PAYE and Self Assessment
HM Revenue and Customs
BX9 1AS
United Kingdom
An extra tip for married individuals: you can gift up to £11,300 of assets to your spouse, and use their Capital Gains Tax allowance, thereby getting up to £22,600 of capital gains tax free annually.
You have two options for how you declare your gains to HMRC:
HMRC will then contact you with instructions for payment.
Until you declare yourself as a trader to HMRC (as below), you are considered an investor and your annual gains are subject to Capital Gains Tax as above.
Remember that even if you make less profit than the CGT allowance but have sold more than four times the allowance worth in cryptocurrency, then you have to report this to HMRC as above.
If you have made more than the CGT allowance then you will have to report and pay tax on your gains. Bear in mind that every single trade you make – even crypto to crypto – impacts tax calculations. (To calculate capital gains on a crypto to crypto trade, convert everything into GBP value at the time of the trade. I know.. it’s crazy.) So if you have made a significant number of trades, it is probably worthwhile getting a tax professional just to make sure you get things right.
Advice from HMRC was to consider the tax rules governing the sale of shares (which can be found here and in further detail here) as comparable to the sale of cryptocurrency.
What is significant with respect to CGT is the concept of share matching, roughly translated to a complex example BTC scenario as follows:
If you trade crypto but are unsure whether your trading constitutes a ‘trade’ in the eyes of HMRC, they suggest looking up the badges of trade to see how many you fulfil. However as this is not clear cut in any form, it’s probably best to discuss your position with a tax professional, as if you do qualify, you have to set up as a sole trader, after which your gains will become subject to Income Tax, not CGT. Usually your tax burden will be higher as a result.
When you spends cryptocurrency in order to purchase a good or a service, this is still considered an asset disposal and has to be assessed as such.

Nucleus Vision (NCASH)
Founded at Harvard University, Nucleus Vision is an IoT-based, contactless identification system that empowers retailers to identify and better serve their customers.
It can be used in bricks and mortar businesses such as hotels, retailers and holiday resorts. The potential market is HUGE as it can be used globally.
So the idea is that there is NO app requires, NO bluetooth or even facial recognition for the technology to operate! Their proprietary technology has a sensor which allows the customer information to be securely sent to the retailer over blockchain (upon customer consent). The retailer then receives intelligent information about the customer from the wider network of other retailers. All information feeds into the deep Nureon network.

Welcome back! We’ve got a treat for you here, or is it a trick? It’s hard to tell with some of these fail stories, and, of course, there were so many crazy tales from the cryptosphere that we couldn’t possibly write about them all. We’ve chosen five that the Cryptopulse team thought were pretty darn hilarious!
10,000 Bitcoins… for pizza?!May 22nd, 2010, programmer Laszlo Hanyecz paid a fellow ‘Bitcoin Talk’ forum user 10,000BTC for two Papa John’s pizzas. At this time, Bitcoin was only about a year old, and all of those BTC were worth just $25. At today’s price, that’s about £66.5m for our British readers, and $92m in US dollars. Staggering.
This is largely considered the first real-world Bitcoin transaction, and is celebrated as such each May 22nd. For most people reading, this is pretty hilarious, at Laszlo’s expense!
“It wasn’t like bitcoins had any value back then, so the idea of trading them for a pizza was incredibly cool” – Hanyecz in 2013, denying the fail.
Millions lost when Mt Gox collapsedThis fail is much worse than £66m pizza – this fail cost nearly half a billion.
In February 2014, then largest crypto-trading platform ‘Mt Gox’ went bankrupt and shut down, losing 850,000 bitcoins and £22m of user cash. The Tokyo-based exchange pointed the finger towards hackers who exploited a software security weakness, but later revealed they had found 200,000 of the coins.
The fail deepens. The chief of Mt Gox, Mark Karpelés was arrested, accused of embezzlement of user funds, and is largely responsible for the total fail that left 127,000 people out of pocket and claiming money back. He managed to avoid prison, but must remain in Japan.
Karpelés is a bit of a failure specialist as it happens, having been caught ‘pirating’ servers several times in France, and being accused by Ross Ulbricht, creator of the Silk Road, as the true mastermind behind the dark web marketplace.
Where did HODL come from?If you caught Episode 3 of our podcast, you’ll know all about HODL, and the story that accompanies it. But if not, or if you want further detail, here’s the post that led to the crypto-culture slang.
‘I type d that tyitle twice because I knew it was wrong the first time. Still wrong. w/e. GF’s out at a lesbian bar, BTC crashing WHY AM I HOLDING? I’LL TELL YOU WHY. It’s because I’m a bad trader and I KNOW I’M A BAD TRADER. Yeah you good traders can spot the highs and the lows pit pat piffy wing wong wang just like that and make a millino bucks sure no problem bro. Likewise the weak hands are like OH NO IT’S GOING DOWN I’M GONNA SELL he he he and then they’re like OH GOD MY ASSHOLE when the SMART traders who KNOW WHAT THE FUCK THEY’RE DOING buy back in but you know what? I’m not part of that group. When the traders buy back in I’m already part of the market capital so GUESS WHO YOU’RE CHEATING day traders NOT ME~! Those taunt threads saying “OHH YOU SHOULD HAVE SOLD” YEAH NO SHIT. NO SHIT I SHOULD HAVE SOLD. I SHOULD HAVE SOLD MOMENTS BEFORE EVERY SELL AND BOUGHT MOMENTS BEFORE EVERY BUY BUT YOU KNOW WHAT NOT EVERYBODY IS AS COOL AS YOU. You only sell in a bear market if you are a good day trader or an illusioned noob. The people inbetween hold. In a zero-sum game such as this, traders can only take your money if you sell.
so i’ve had some whiskey
actually on the bottle it’s spelled whisky
w/e
sue me
(but only if it’s payable in BTC)’
Explanation – Man gets drunk, decided to hold his crypto, misspells the title and becomes bitcoin folklore and slang!
Guy threw out 7,500 bitcoin in a hard driveWell, at least Laszlo got two pizzas for his £45m loss! This guy got it so much worse.
Meet James Howells, from Newport, Wales, who threw out 7,500 bitcoins. Howells bought his Bitcoin back in 2009, when the tech was very new, and after years he simply forgot about it, until the boom. Then he remembered, oh boy, did he remember!
After spilling a hot drink on his computer, he simply threw it away. Now, he’s on a mission to get it back, and he says that it should be easier than if he’d lost a lottery ticket, in theory. Quite optimistic there James…
He’s on the lookout for investors who will help him excavate his local landfill to try and find the bitcoins, in exchange for a cut.
“I could go back to work for the rest of my life but then I would always be thinking about it,” Mr Howells said. “At least if I give it a shot, then it’s checked, the box is checked, I tried.”
Bitcoin and CoinDaddyWe couldn’t decided which of these was a more tragic fail – a 79 year-old rapper called Bitcoin, or a rapper who ‘spits’ exclusively about different cryptocurrencies called CoinDaddy.
Where do we even begin with this one?
Bitcoin
He raps about not having a cell phone, and that he still uses a landline, and he publicly addressed Donald Trump in what can only be described as… strange (link: viewer discretion advised). Bitcoin also has a song about smoking weed for his glaucoma. Why he is called Bitcoin we still don’t know, but he claims that whilst making a pilot for a new tv series, he was asked for make a rap music video for a sketch, and it evolved from there.
One thing that is not a fail, is the message behind his music, which is to help himself live longer and to remind other elderly people that they are still capable of doing the things they enjoy.
Learn about Bitcoin here.
CoinDaddy
Self-described as a bitcoin entertainer, personality and crypto-rapper, CoinDaddy is the sort of cryptospherical (it’s a new word) evolution that nobody in their right mind envisioned.
Laugh at him all you like, his shameless approach to ‘stardom’ has earned him a lot of crypto, a lot of YouTube revenue, and a lot of fans. He lives in the California Bay Area too, so he can’t be doing too badly!
In CoinDaddy’s cover of Eminem’s Stan, he does a pretty good job of writing a letter to Charlie Lee, founder of Litecoin. Here’s the chorus…
‘Charlie Lee just sold I’m wondering why
I bought Litecoin at all
The morning FUD drove down the price so
Now I can’t sell at all
And even if I could I would still just hold
With my limit on the wall
To remind me that I’ve got these bags, I’ve got these bags’

Here are some of the topics we covered:
Pete’s background and how he was inspired by Peter Diamandis
The problem Votem is trying solve
A simple explanation of Votem and how it works
How voters could use the system and how it could provide an easy point of entry for voters.
We also ask the questions:
The democratic system has come under fire over the last decade, with lots of talk of political votes being rigged or outside manipulation - How does Votem ensure that manipulation doesn’t occur?
Votem’s Proof of Vote public protocol aims to provide irrefutable evidence of the result of a valid vote that was cast - how does this work?
How does your marketing evolve when you’re going from fundraising to educating potential customers?
PLUS a load more which you can listen to in this episode
We also have some questions from members of Cryptopulse VIP Community on Facebook.
Samuel Flatman asks:
My controversial question to Votem would be ‘Do you really think that Liberal Democracy will survive in our 24/7/365 social media manipulated world?’
Simon Rees asks:
Do you think the current system of voting is open to manipulation? If so do they think the political elite would ever adopt a system that they cannot manipulate?
