Centralized proprietary collaboration software has recently faced a grown scepticism. In November 2022, the French Government officially asked schools to not use Google's and Microsoft's collaboration services. Luckily there are open source alternatives that can be self-hosted to give individuals and institutions more contol over their data. While users thus do no more need to rely on big companies, they still need to trust the system administrators hosting the software to respect the user's privacy.

CryptPad is an end-to-end encrypted open source collaboration suite. It seeks to reconcile collaboration and privacy. Users make changes to documents and these are encrypted by their client (web browser) before being sent to the server for real-time synchronization. CryptPad hides the technicalities of encryption from its users and provides a clean and intuitive interface to ease fast adaption. In this talk I will present how CryptPad keeps the user's data private and protects them against a passively sniffing server. I will show why we combine end-to-end encryption with open source and will talk about the ecosystem around CryptPad.

Les services Cloud sont de plus en plus utilisés et vos données sont de plus en plus exposées. Même si les services Clouds "promettent" d'assurer la sécurité de vos données, nous ne contrôlons pas effectivement ce qui est mis en place pour assurer la sécurité de nos données et notre vie privée. De nombreux services cloud utilisent nos données pour mettre en place des business models basés sur la publicité qui lisent nos données et les transfèrent à des services publicitaires. D'autres sont plus transparents, mais peinent à sécuriser effectivement nos données.

Pourtant une autre approche est possible !

Dans cette présentation, nous présenterons le projet CryptPad (https://cryptpad.fr) qui offre une solution de collaboration chiffrée de bout en bout. CryptPad, développé depuis maintenant plus de 5 ans est une suite collaborative chiffrée de bout en bout permettant l'édition de documents de multiple format en temps réel. Celle plateforme intègre plus de 8 types de documents dont les format Office avec import et export, un kanban, un éditeur HTML, un éditeur Markdown, un outil de Dessin et un outil de création de sondage, ainsi qu'un Drive avec des dossiers partagés. L'outil dispose aussi d'une infrastructure de gestion et des partages de clés entre utilisateur, le tout chiffré de bout en bout afin de garantir la plus stricte confidentialité des données possibles.

Storing documents in the so-called "cloud" and collaborating on them in real-time is an expected feature of today's tech platforms. However, convenience and productivity come at the cost of privacy. In most cases, the services that store documents and enable real-time editing also gain access to the data in order to mine it for their own profit.

CryptPad offers an alternative online office suite that is end-to-end encrypted and fully open-source. It includes all the applications and tools for productive collaboration: text documents, spreadsheets, presentations, forms, kanban boards and more. All data is encrypted/decrypted in the browser, which means no readable data ever leaves the user's device.

In this talk I will present CryptPad's features and talk about how the project has been developed to date. I hope to encourage discussion with the GNU Health audience about leveraging existing CryptPad features in a healthcare context, and about which future developments would be needed in this area.

CryptPad is an encrypted and open-source collaboration suite. One year ago I joined the team as a designer. In this talk I will present some of what has been achieved and reflect on the challenges ahead.

When I joined CryptPad in November 2019, the project had already been operating for a few years. Like many open-source projects it was lacking on the design front and I was brought in to "improve the user experience". This broad task takes on many forms, but they all boil down to one thing: improving communication. Whether in UI design, UX writing, answering support tickets, writing documentation, or visual identity, all of my work to date has been about how CryptPad communicates. I did not set out to re-invent everything from scratch but rather aimed to consolidate what was already there and to make the software more legible in a broad sense. This includes the strategy for implementing design changes gradually, negotiating immediate demands (e.g. implementing a new feature) and longer-term ambitions (e.g. rebranding) all while adhering to the release cycle. In this talk I will highlight examples of design improvements achieved this year, from specific features to the release of our documentation and our upcoming 4.0 release with a new visual identity. I will also reflect on the next major challenge: accessibility.

The objective is to present new open source technology using end to end encryption while providing very advanced collaboration features.

As users and organizations we are more and more relying on technology for everything we do, weather it is our personal usage or our business usage.

How much do we need to trust our technology providers to handle our data with care? Is there any way we can be more in control of our data?

The CryptPad project is being build based on a new approach, end-to-end encryption, raising the bar of data security and privacy, while providing a high usability and many collaboration features, including real-time collaboration.

In this talk, I will present the challenges we are tackling with CryptPad, what specific open source technology we have used and developed for CryptPad and how far we have advanced to provide an end-to-end encrypted collaboration suite.
