help listeners understand important parts of Cuban life, traditions, and everyday experiences — especially for people who may have never heard these words before. Each word represents something meaningful in Cuban culture and shows how culture continues to influence us in the 21st century. The five words I chose are:
- Ropa Vieja – a traditional Cuban dish that represents family, history, and the reality of food scarcity in Cuba.
- Pregonero – a street vendor who sings and performs while selling items, showing the musical and expressive spirit of Cuban culture.
- Café Cubano (colado) – strong Cuban coffee that symbolizes community, daily rituals, and cultural connection.
- Quinceañera – the celebration of a girl’s fifteenth birthday, marking her transition into womanhood through symbolic traditions.
- Language (Cuban Spanish) – the unique slang, rhythm, and expressions Cubans use, showing how language reflects identity and cultural diversity.
Throughout the recording, I explain each word as if the listener has never heard it before. I share stories, examples, and cultural meaning behind each one. My goal is to show how Cuban culture contributes to cultural literacy in America today, and how understanding different cultural traditions helps us connect with one another.
