Cuban Stories on The Green Plantain

Happy Halloween!

Today I woke up remembering my first one in Union City, New Jersey. I was ten years old, and I had no idea what trick-or-treating was.

It is interesting that, as much as I have written about my memories in books like The Flight of the Tocororo and Brave Water. This is the first time I have been able to share in its entirety.

It’s a bittersweet memory—one that makes me wish I could thank my sister again.

He arrived on US soil in 1970 after his second Vietnam tour.  Anairborne soldier, he joined the Army reserves as a Special Forces Green Beret. This story takes us back to 1974 and Fisher Island in Miami-Dade.

If, in 1974, you had been invited to Fisher Island by a scion of anold-money family, you would have encountered an isolated and somewhat forgotten tropical island beside one of Miami’s busiest shipping channels—part overgrown millionaire’s estate, part marine-research outpost, and part industrial storage site.

But what happened in 1974 opened eyes to other possibilities.
