In this episode, anthropologist Ju-Chen Chen, former senior lecturer at the Department of Anthropology, CUHK, talks about her recent research on independent music. She explores how the musicians live a life not aiming at capital accumulation. Instead, they make use of music to create “sonic moments” that connect people and lead to a sense of freedom. Ju-chen also touches on how to exit the research field, and the linkage between her research and her own path in anthropology. Lastly, she shares a song Kite by Taiwanese singer Misa (米莎) to express her feelings before leaving Hong Kong.

香港中文大學人類學系系友伍志和,多年來從事歷史建築、文物及非物質文化遺產保育工作,曾參與上水應龍廖公家塾、西貢滘西洲洪聖古廟、景賢里等修復項目,保育古建築及傳統工藝。他指每個保育項目都像做人類學田野調查,須花時間跟不同持分者建立關係,深入了解他們的文化習俗。伍曾於人類學系任教「Seminars in Hong Kong Studies」一科,帶學生到訪新界圍村,更會安排學生食盆菜,發掘香港富有歷史文化的一面。

UG & MPhil graduate of the CUHK Anthropology Department Mr. Ng Chi Wo has been dedicating himself to studying and preserving historical architecture, tangible and intangible cultural heritage. He has participated in the conservation of Liu Ying Fung Study Hall (Sheung Shui), Kau Sai Chau Hung Shing Temple (Sai Kung), and King Yin Lei, among many others. Ng sees each conservation project similar to fieldwork experience, which requires a solid understanding of the local culture and beliefs, as well as building good relationships with various stakeholders. Teaching “Seminars in Hong Kong Studies” at the Anthropology Department, he takes students to local villages to get first-hand experience of the other side of Hong Kong.

An Mengzhu, PhD graduate of the Department of Anthropology, CUHK, studies how parents in urban China strive for a dignified and worthy life for their children with autism by responding to various challenges at different stages of their children’s growth. Mengzhu is also one of the core editors of a new media anthropology platform "TyingKnots", which is dedicated to introducing anthropological perspectives, studies, and engagement to the public. In this episode, Mengzhu shares about her PhD research, discusses her understanding and practice of public anthropology, and explores how to transcend different boundaries through a decentralized way of knowledge production.

香港中文大學人類學系助理教授黃宣穎多年來在醫學與人類學之間游走,他於 2003 年畢業於國立臺灣大學醫學院,從事精神科,並於2013 年於哈佛大學獲社會人類學博士學位。黃宣穎專注於醫療人類學的領域,從 2008 年開始著手研究中國的「心理熱」,以及西方式心理治療在中國的發展。自稱為「半個人類學家和一個精神科醫生」的他,致力以人文社科的視角審視不同地方和社會的醫療觀念與實踐。

Assistant Professor in the CUHK Department of Anthropology Dr. Hsuan-Ying Huang describes himself as “one psychiatrist and half an anthropologist”. He obtained an M.D. from National Taiwan University in 2003 and a Ph.D. in Social Anthropology from Harvard University in 2013. Huang emphasizes the importance of looking at medical systems and practices from a cultural and social point of view. In this episode, we will talk about his research on ‘psycho-boom’ in China, as well as how he traverses between disciplines.

After “accidentally” taking one introductory course as an undergraduate student, Teresa Kuan, now Associate Professor at CUHK Department of Anthropology, decided to declare anthropology as her major. In this episode, Teresa walks us through her anthropology journey: how the first encounter of China anthropology blew her mind, how the experience of filmmaking can be related to fieldwork, and how her latest research on family therapy in mainland China engages with recent theoretical debates in the anthropology of morality and ethics, from people’s efforts in problematizing and addressing certain realms of human suffering and flourishing, to anthropologists’ positioning between “being suspicious of the power relation” and “appreciating the practical wisdom”.

In this episode, we are speaking to Dr. Ju-chen Chen, senior lecturer of the Department of Anthropology at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Ju-chen received her Ph.D. from Rutgers University. Her Ph.D. dissertation addresses the remaking of Beijing under the impacts of the late socialist Chinese state and the expansion of global capitalism in the early 2000s. She is keen on learning about the “aspiration” of different people, from Filipino workers in Hong Kong, to independent music communities in Hong Kong and Taiwan. The importance of senses in fieldwork also intrigues her. Towards the end of the episode, Ju-chen shares her view on how anthropology provides a sense of comfort during difficult times.

Anthropology emphasizes the importance of observing, analyzing and articulating the culture and life of people who are very different from ourselves. Design researcher Ire Tsui, who graduated from the MA programme of CUHK Anthropology, applied anthropological training and way of thinking to her work in media and design research. Ire worked as managing editor for Ming Pao Weekly before founding design research studio Talking Hands and becoming a member of Enable Foundation. She is currently focusing on curatorial and research projects related to aging and dementia. In this episode, Ire will share how anthropology and design research can be blended creatively to truly meet the needs of the society and its people.

The discovery of the Sacred Hill Site in the new Sung Wong Toi Station has aroused the public’s concern on conserving archaeological sites with historical importance. In this episode, we interviewed Assistant Professor Dr. Sharon Wong, who has devoted decades to archaeology and cultural heritage studies. Through investigating specific archaeological sites, relics, ruins and bones, Sharon digs into the local culture, history and human activities in the past, as well as the connections with the outside world. Sharon argues that understanding the past enables us to understand the present and the future, and it helps to construct our cultural identity.
