  • WTMusic: Paul Lidel – Of Crimes and Toys
The We Talk Music podcast is proud to have the chance to induct a new entry into the Equally Nice and Talented Guy Hall of Fame! That's because Paul Lidel of Dangerous Toys and 99 Crimes fame joins the show.

Paul is a world class guitarist who's also played with Dirty Looks, Broken Teeth and Adrenaline Factor. Mr. Lidel also passes along his knowledge through instructional videos, books and private lessons. In addition, Paul has an excellent singing voice, taking on those duties with 99 Crimes.

There's so much to dive into on this one, so take a deep breath and join us as we discuss:

    * How 99 Crimes came to be part of the Hollywood Hairspray Volume 8 compilation album from Perris Records. He talks the exposure the band has gotten from it
    * His singing and how he feels about doing it
    * The 99 Crimes self titled debut album from earlier this year and what song he on it he thinks best represents the band
    * What 's next for Dangerous Toys and the album cover they have for their upcoming album
    * His prolific songwriting and how he and 99 Crimes decide what songs to play from such an already enormous library of songs
    * Memories of the early years with Dirty Looks
    * Coming into Dangerous Toys just before their 2nd album and when he felt he was able to fully contribute to the band the way he wanted to
    * Looking back on some thoughts from Paul Lidel many years ago on how the internet would change music, and how right he was or wasn't
    * The amazing cover to the Dirty Looks album "Turn of the Screw"

A great chat with a great musician and an even better guy, we can't wait to get Paul Lidel back on the air. And make sure to check out our interview with Dangerous Toys lead singer Jason McMaster. It's from February of 2018 and titled "Coffee and Metal Nerds".

  • WTMusic: Bobby Ingram of Molly Hatchet

We Talk Music is way down South! This time Brett welcomes Molly Hatchet band leader and guitarist Bobby Ingram to the show. A veteran of the Southern music scene, Bobby has been with Molly Hatchet for 33 years and is keeping the band going strong.

Molly Hatchet has been dishing out helpings of Southern rock for over 40 years. The untimely passing of vocalist Phil McCormack prompted the band to find a new singer and delayed the release of their new live album, but the wait is worth it. On November 29th, the energetic, hits laden double album Battleground was released via Steamhammer/SPV. We talk that as well as a bunch of other topics including:

    * The length of time it took to record the new live album
    * The involvement of the fans in the recording process
    * The spirit of the band as a live act
    * What new singer Jimmy Elkins brings to the band
    * Keeping Southern rock alive
    * The generations of Molly Hatchet fans
    * How Molly Hatchet as a band has had to adapt over 40+ years
    * How the media has backed the band along the way
    * The members of the band and their personalities
    * Paul Raymond Gregory and the album covers

Lots of great stuff in this interview, so check it out, and be on the lookout for another great interview from We Talk Music coming your way soon! And you can be sure to expect plenty of big announcements of what's in store for WTM in 2020!

  • WTP Special: Kevin McDonald, Lemonade Monkey

We Talk Podcasts is proud to welcome a very special guest to the show! Brett is joined by Kids In the Hall cast member Kevin McDonald to promote his "rock opera" that he is performing December 13th at the Rivoli Theatre in Toronto . We'll let Kevin explain, but you should still listen to the podcast.

For my Toronto show, people can expect a comic, mini rock opera that I wrote - even though I'm not a musician. Some nerve, huh? It doesn't have a lot of chords but it's a true, disgusting story that happened to me and Dave Foley in the early 90s in New York and Toronto.

When I was a kid, the 7th thing I liked (2 of the other 5 were the Beatles and Get Smart) was Jesus Christ, Superstar. I played and sang horribly in the part of Judas in Catholic high school. Oh that's another thing people should know - I can't sing - though at the rock opera, I will be singing.

I always wanted to write and perform my own rock opera. So I bought a guitar and taught myself a few chords (I hope people like G. There will be a lot of G in this rock opera). The show will have real and talented singers, and the amazing Alun Piggins playing the guitar (Don't worry, I won't play guitar.. but I do sing), and also playing the part of Dave. I play the part of Kevin. I had to audition for it. And though it's a disgusting, true story, I think it's funny and I promise not to ruin the songs.

Kevin and Brett talk about the the difficulty of writing comedy, and how much work it was for him to learn to be an improv performer, plus the special bond he shares with the other members of Kids in the Hall.

Kevin McDonald also talks about the things that go into being a voice actor. Besides working for Disney on Lilo & Stitch, he has an animated movie on Netflix right now called "Invader Zim: Enter the Florpus", based on the animated series "Invader Zim".

He talks about being on a "Bob Dylan" never ending tour where he goes to a different city every weekend, teaching during the days, and performing at night. Most recently he stopped here in Calgary.

Along with the Rock Opera, he's currently writing a pilot for the producer of Schitt's Creek, plus he goes around the country doing his podcast in front of live audiences. You should check it out, it's very funny and it also has a (shorter) version of the "rock opera" he'll be performing in Toronto.

  • WTMusic: Tommy Victor of Prong

We Talk Music is going old school! This time Brett welcomes singer and guitarist Tommy Victor of the band Prong. Tommy stays very busy and felt it was time to release an EP that is like an old school single so Prong is back with Age of Defiance out now from SPV/Steamhammer.

Prong has been around since the early 80s, dishing out crushing riffs and killer songs. After taking some time away from the band, Tommy Victor brought them back with a vengeance. Not wanting to have too long between albums, the decision was made to release the EP, Age of Defiance. We talk that as well as a bunch of other topics including:

    * The EP being focused on a couple of songs rather than a full length album
    * How the business of music has changed since the band started
    * Things that were better in the industry during the early days of the band
    * Selling his paintings and how he got into painting
    * Transcendental Meditation and its impact on his songs
    * What he learned from working with Ministry and Danzig
    * The guys in the band, and trying to keep the band together
    * Touring plans for Prong in 2020

Lots of great stuff in this interview, so check it out, and be on the lookout for another great interview from We Talk Music coming your way soon! And you can be sure to expect plenty of big announcements of what's in store for WTM in 2020!
