JESUS’ ROLES – Prophet, Priest, & King
Matthew 5.17-18; John 19.30; Prophet: John 1.1-18; 14.6-14; Hebrews 3.1-4.13; Priest: Romans 8.34; Hebrews 4.14-5.10; 7.1-13; 9.10-18; King: Isaiah 9.6-7; Daniel 2.31-35; Acts 2.32-35; Mark 1.15; Philippians 2.9-11; Matthew 10.7; 11.12; 13.1-15 (cf. Daniel 2.34-35, 44-45; Haggai 2.20-23)
Jesus perfectly fulfilled the Hebrew Scripture offices (or roles) of Prophet, Priest, and King. These roles foreshadowed the Messiah:
1. Prophet – A prophet of God proclaims God’s truth to people. As the true Prophet, Jesus is the ultimate source of truth. Jesus’ prophetic authority is greater than that of earlier prophets in that he spoke for God as God.
2. Priest – A priest represents the people before God and represents God before the people. As the perfect Priest, Jesus stands in the presence of God as both sacrifice and mediator. Jesus’ priestly role is greater than that of earlier priests in that he is both God and human.
3. King – The kings of the Hebrew Scriptures had limited reign, authority, and land. As the Anointed King, Jesus sits at the right hand of God, the Father, until he returns as crowned King. Jesus’ Kingly role is greater than that of previous kings in that his Kingdom is forever. It began with John (the Baptizer) proclaiming the Kingdom’s presence and will continue to fill the whole earth after which Jesus will return to reign.
Which role of Jesus do you find easy to embrace? Why?
THE SON — Jesus is Perfect Humanity
Colossians 1.15-20; 1 Timothy 2.5-6; John 1.1-18; Luke 5.52; Hebrews 2.10-18; 4.14-16; 5.7-10; Isaiah 7.10-17; John 1.14; Luke 2.39-40; Romans 1.3; 8.3; Galatians 4.4; Philippians 2.5-8; 1 John 4.2-3
Jesus is and always has been God. However, Jesus added to his divinity humanity. He lived as we lived. He suffered as we suffered. He was tempted as we were tempted. Yet, he chose not to sin. To be a truly accurate and completely effective representative, restorer, and redeemer of humanity, Jesus had to be and have the same experience and nature as us.
When is it difficult for you to trust that Jesus was created, lived, matured, and was tempted exactly like you? Why? What is the most encouraging aspect of knowing Jesus can identify with you in every respect?
From this study, prayerfully walk through the following steps:
STEP #1 – REMEMBER JESUS SHARES YOUR HUMANITY (Hebrews 2.18)
Jesus took on flesh and blood so that he could fully identify with us. He knows what it means to suffer, to be weak, and to be tempted. He is not distant from your struggles. Ask the Holy Spirit: In what circumstance or relationship do I usually forget that Jesus truly understands what I’m going through?
STEP #2 – RUN TO HIM IN YOUR WEAKNESS (Hebrews 4.16)
Since Jesus has already gone through temptation without sin, we can approach him with confidence when we are weak. He doesn’t condemn but offers mercy and grace in real time through the Holy Spirit. Ask the Holy Spirit: How can I bring my weaknesses and temptations honestly to Jesus instead of hiding them?
STEP #3 – RECEIVE STRENGTH FOR OBEDIENCE (Hebrews 2.14):
Jesus doesn’t just sympathize; he strengthens us to overcome. When we depend on him in conjunction with the Holy Spirit, we find power to resist temptation and live faithfully. Ask the Holy Spirit: When or with whom am I usually tempted to depend on my own strength? How can I trust Your strength with [insert previous answer]?
