If your athletes played as well together as your coaching staff does, how would your team perform? 💪
Too many coaching teams shy away from conflict, avoid tough conversations, and miss out on the power of direct feedback. Ironically, these are the very things we expect from our athletes! So, how can we ask them to step up if we, as adults, aren't leading by example?
Head coaches, athletic directors, and administrators—let's build strong coaching teams that show our athletes how it's done! #TeamCulture #LeadByExample #CoachingMatters #StrongerTogether

🎧 The Power of Knowing Who You Are (and Who You’re Not): Lessons from Viking Cruises, Southwest Airlines & Shaka Smart 🎧
In this insightful episode, we explore how Viking Cruises consistently ranks as the world’s top cruise line by doing what most companies shy away from—focusing on what they don’t offer. Viking has carved out a niche by knowing exactly who they are and, just as crucially, who they are not. In an industry full of choices, Viking has built success by excluding certain customer bases, like families or bargain hunters, and delivering an experience that speaks directly to their core audience: mature, curious travelers with a passion for history, culture, and exploration.
We also dive into comparisons with other standout organizations like Southwest Airlines and insights from leaders like Marquette Basketball Head Coach Shaka Smart and renowned performance psychologist Dr. Michael Gervais. Each of these figures embraces a powerful truth: high performance and long-term success come from understanding your unique strengths and staying true to them.
Whether you're in sports, business, or leadership, this episode will show you why focusing on who you are not is just as vital as knowing who you are. Learn how strategic clarity, self-discovery, and staying true to your mission can set you apart from the competition.

In this episode, we dive into a timeless story about two legendary authors, Kurt Vonnegut and Joseph Heller, and their profound conversation about contentment, success, and knowing when you have "enough." Heller’s wisdom offers a powerful reminder that in a world driven by constant achievement, the real prize is contentment.
We also explore how UCLA coach John Wooden, with ten National Championships under his belt, recognized the growing expectations that come with success—and why he chose to abandon society’s scorecard. Whether you’re a coach, athlete, or anyone chasing goals, this episode will make you rethink what success really costs and why finding satisfaction in the present is key.
Learn why comparing yourself to others can be a dangerous trap, the hidden costs behind winning, and how true fulfillment comes not from acquiring more, but from realizing what you have is enough.

Every coach has experienced those practices where, within just a few minutes, you realize it’s going to be a rough day. No matter how much you encourage, urge, or even beg your team, their effort, focus, or attitude remains poor. By the end of practice, you’re left questioning whether anyone improved at all—you feel like you’ve wasted the last hour of your life. In these moments, it’s easy to blame the players. But remember:
In a recent conversation with Shaka Smart on the Coaching Culture Podcast, we delved into the importance of his morning routine. The idea that you can’t just roll out of bed and expect to be your best self struck a chord with me. It echoes Ryan Holiday’s paraphrase of the philosopher Seneca: “Virtue consists of two parts: the study of truth, followed by conduct. If there is a third part, it would be admonishment and reminders—the process of reviewing, reflecting, and creating rules based on our experiences.”
Review. Reflect. Create rules. This is the process through which we build our character.

Coaching isn’t just a job—it’s a meaningful, fulfilling, and yes, sometimes challenging journey. 💪 As a coach, it’s easy to give your all to your athletes, but don’t forget to take care of you. 🌟 Here are my top 3 tips for personal growth as a coach:
One of my biggest regrets as a young coach? How I treated referees. 🏀😬 I was so quick to criticize and forget they’re human too, making mistakes just like the rest of us. Constantly yelling and pushing boundaries didn’t do anyone any favors – it just set a bad example for my team and made it harder to get calls in our favor.
Here’s what I’ve learned over the years:
1️⃣ Build a relationship – Refs are people too, get to know them! 🙌
Not only does this create a better atmosphere, but it teaches our athletes how to handle setbacks without pointing fingers. 💪🏽
Tag a coach who can relate! 🏆 #CoachLife #RespectTheRefs #AthleteMindset
