  • 13: How to Get Your Ideas Considered by Your Boss
Many employees have ideas that they want to present to their boss but don’t know how to do so in the best way. Your ideas are valuable and deserve to be considered fairly. This episode gives you 5 important steps that will help your boss consider your ideas and not brush them off.

1.Do your research: This should be both internal research (trends, metrics, surveys, etc.) and external research (industry trends, competitors, etc.). Make sure that there’s a need for the idea you’re suggesting and have research to support it.
2.Take initiative: You don’t have to wait for your manager or someone else to voice that there’s a need for something. If you notice a need or a problem, take initiative and determine whether your idea would be a good and effective solution for it.
3.Test your idea: Always validate your idea by testing it in the best way possible. You want to ensure the solution will indeed work before presenting it to your boss.
4.Put your idea in writing: Document why your idea should be considered, the benefits of it, the problem(s) it will solve, and a potential plan for applying/implementing it. This will help your boss take your idea more seriously because you’ve done the due diligence to research how it will help the team/organization.
5.Know the best approach to present your idea to your boss: Consider what matters most to your boss and how they receive information best. Example: If you boss prefers data, graphs, charts, analysis, etc.; make sure you present your idea in this manner. If your boss cares about productivity and (you can prove that) your idea will help boost productivity, this should be the approach that you use for your idea.

  • How to Create Culture with Clients: PRO Talk Tuesday
It's time for another PRO Talk Tuesday! These are episodes where listeners submit questions via email or on Twitter using the hashtag #PROTalkTuesdays and they’re answered here on this podcast.

Today’s question comes from James (via email) and he writes:
“How do I create culture with my clients? I am in the fitness industry and I want my clients to feel that they’re a part of a community more so than just another customer.”

Here are 7 tips that will help you create the culture you desire with your clients:

1.Pick the right clients and be sure to have an onboarding process that clearly explains your vision.
2.Set clear expectations for each client and also know what your clients expect of you.
3.Approach clients from a place of service.
4.Coach through it: help your clients see the end result/outcome even when is seems impossible.
5.Actively engage each client by knowing their individual motivators.
6.Create and/or use systems that build collaboration and community.

  • 12: How to Keep Cheer in the Workplace After the Holidays
Christmas is over, the new year is here, the holiday party is a thing of the past, and so is the cheer. Once the holiday party has passed, it may be difficult to keep employees excited and enthusiastic as they get back into their daily work routine. This episode provides different ways that you can continue the holiday momentum well into the year, while being strategic in your employee engagement and culture building efforts.

    1. Ask your employees about their professional (and even personal goals) for the new year and offer help/support to help them reach those goals.
    2. Give employees something to look forward to.
    3. Continue celebrations throughout the year.
    4. Include employees in upcoming plans and initiatives.
    5. Ask for employee feedback.
    6. Improve the problems that your employees may be facing.
    7. Lead with a positive influence.

  • 11: How to Avoid Demotivating your Staff
Most leaders may say that they don’t demotivate their staff, but have you considered whether your daily habits are demotivating?
Here are 5 passive habits that may be demotivating your staff:

    1.Don’t ignore your employees.
2.Don’t edit/change employee work without their knowledge.
3.Trust employees to do their jobs.
    4.Delegate.
    5.Avoid passive micro-managing.

Our actions as leaders have a great impact on employees. Be aware of these habits (and any others) so that you won’t cancel out any of your motivating efforts with passive and demotivating habits.

So many people make New Year’s resolutions to reach their goals, but those end up falling off to the wayside by January 10th. Why does this happen? Because many tend to stay in the inspiration mindset and don’t transition their inspiration to motivation. Although these terms tend to be used as one in the same, the results of each are different.

I mentioned 2 definitions of inspiration; one from Oxford Dictionaries (https://en.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/inspiration) and the other from Merriam Webster (https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/inspiration).
I also gave the follow definitions of motivation as well: (https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/motivation) , (https://en.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/motivation).
In this episode, you will learn why being inspired to reach goals just isn’t enough. You’ll be given 6 practical ways on how to stay motivated to get the results you want for the New Year in your professional life

  • 07: How to be an Effective Professional, Pt. 2
How to be an Effective Professional Pt. 2… It was just too good to only have one episode!
As we continue the #BackToTheBasicsSeries, this episode reviews areas 5 – 9 of effectiveness as a professional. When it comes to professionalism, there are some characteristics and skills that come easily to us while others don’t and in the same instance, there may be some that we simply just don’t consider. For example, how many times do we (intentionally) consider how collaborative we are with others? What about being a good listener? Are you actively mindful of how you’re receiving and interpreting what others are trying to communicate? This episode discusses the importance of being a good listener and being collaborative in addition to a few other areas.

Being a good listener also ties into being solution minded, which was discussed more in depth in Pt. 1 (Episode 06, baproinc.com/ncn06).

Accountability was also mentioned briefly in this episode. For a better understanding of professional accountability, check out episode 05 baproinc.com/ncn05.

What is the most unprofessional situation that you’ve experienced or witnessed? I’m really interested in hearing your stories, so please send them to [email protected]. You can also tweet your experiences using the hashtag #BTTSeries.

Not good, not better, but effective. We are still in the #BackToTheBasicsSeries, going over the essentials of being professionals. Effectiveness is very distinct although it may sometimes take simple actions.
