Harry writes home on his birthday about a trip to Freetown. Joan substitutes for Harrys classes and describes an incident that occurred.

In this episode Joan assists with a premature infant and we learn why there are so many C-Sections in the community. We also learn the importance of typhoid shots (a little late). Harry writes about a an unfortunate incident on the compound and 40 years ago today it was election day in the United States.

In this episode Harry writes home and describes how Ya Marie spends a day making palm oil in addition to helping the boys create a costume for Halloween. He also describes the funeral for the Principals relative and the family begins to care for a premature baby.

The Thornhills have an exciting weekend up country. The boys cross into another country and get to meet the Vice President of Sierra Leone.  We also get the a back-story of souvenir placemats.

Harry describes how people dress on a Muslim holy day and Mary Jean visits.

Harry becomes an ambulance driver to assist a pregnant mother. 

Joan writes home about assisting at a rural clinic. She also attempts to make Italian food in Africa. 

The kids can now explore on their own.

The Thornhills pick up a couple of unique animals and begin to explore more of Kamakwie. Harry is challenged by the teaching schedule and Joan heads to a remote clinic.
