Wendy Eaton joins the Project Zion team for the first time as a host with an episode of Cuppa Joe highlighting the first in the 2025 Winter Series, “An Evening with the Historians.” That’s right, the Community of Christ Historic Sites Foundation has put together another great line up of authors who share their latest writings. In this Cuppa Joe episode, Wendy sits down with Kyle Walker, author of Sister of the Prophet: Katherine Smith Salisbury and immediate past president of the John Whitmer Historical Society, to hear a little more about his book and his research. As Community of Christ moves closer to the historic moment of considering the call of the first woman President/Prophet of the church, Stassi Cramm, there is no better time to reflect with Karin Peter and historian extraordinaire, Wendy Eaton, to take a look across the years at all the women who have had a prophetic influence on the church and its people.  In this episode of Cuppa Joe, Wendy presents seven women, some of whom we’ve heard of and some who are new to Project Zion listeners.  Listen in to see just how influential women of the Restoration movement have been and continue to be. The call to prayer made by one woman in Lamoni, IA in the late 1800s sparks the interest of thousands of women around the world and raises the ire of a lot of men. Eleanor Kearney hasn’t been spoken of much in the church, but she’s another of the unsung women heroes of the church.  Because of her feistiness and determination, and in spite of her hearing disability, Eleanor played a significant role in engaging women in ministry and raising awareness of women’s contributions to the church. The Wight family has a long history of serving the church, and Estella Wight was no exception.  A prolific author who got her start by submitting a story to Marietta Walker at a young age, and then going on to work for Herald Publishing for many years, Estella filled the minds and hearts of the children and youth of the church through articles, poetry, stories and books. In this latest episode in the “Women of the Restoration” series, Wendy Eaten explains how Estella’s contributions to the writings of the church through several publications and published works charmed young and old alike ... all the while proving the inestimable worth of women in shaping the Restoration in ways too often overlooked.

We don’t have to look too closely to find things in our past that may have been progressive at the time, but are considered embarrassing by many in today’s context. Physical places have always played an important role in preserving history. Much more important for a church called to Christ’s mission is how we integrate it into our lives, learn from it, and carry it forward by becoming the storytellers that keep it alive.
