This season, we're exploring the rich history of Ukraine, a nation with increasing global significance. As a crossroads between East and West, Ukraine's unique position has shaped its distinct cultural identity and historical development. For many viewers around the world, Ukraine's story—its traditions, heritage, and historical journey—remains less known, often overshadowed by the historical narratives of neighboring powers. To better appreciate current developments and understand the character of its people, we'll examine Ukraine's fascinating historical context with a balanced perspective.
In our previous episode, we explored Ukraine's early history - from ancient nomadic peoples to the rise and fall of the medieval state of Kyivan Rus. We saw how this borderland region emerged as a cultural and political center before eventually falling to outside powers.
Now, guided by the acclaimed Harvard University historian Serhii Plokhy and his book, "The Gates of Europe," we will focus on the formation of a distinct Ukrainian identity through the Cossack Hetmanate, its complex relationship with the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, and its eventual subjugation by the Russian and Habsburg Empires.
