Much ink has been spilled about the yet to be released film The New Village. What’s behind the controversy and is it the responsibility of film-makers to be historically accurate on when making a period piece? A joint statement by producers Astro Shaw and Yellow Pictures, claims that the movie is a Chinese period feature film in Mandarin that depicts forbidden love set against the backdrop of the struggles of the Chinese communities in resettlement camps called New Villages, set up by the British. Others see “hidden messages” and pro-Communist propaganda.

R. Sri Sanjeevan, chief of anti-crime NGO, MyWatch, was shot on Saturday. He survived the traffic junction shooting in which the bullet penetrated his right arm, puncturing his right lung. Claims have been made in the media that Sanjeevan was about to reveal names of individuals involved in high-ranking corruption in the police force. Sanjeevan is a Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) office bearer in Negri Sembilan. We spoke to Radin Shamshul Akmar for updates on Sanjeevan’s condition.

Keeping you up to date on the 18th Round of the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement. Tomorrow there will be several Stakeholder events. The Government of Malaysia will provide the opportunity for registered stakeholders to make presentations on issues related to the TPP and exchange views with delegates. Additionally, the Chief Negotiators will hold a briefing to update stakeholders on TPP developments. We speak to A Sivarajan, spokesperson for Parti Sosialis Malaysia, which is part of a broad-based coalition called Gabungan Bantah TPPA/ FTA. Later today the Gabungan, led by Malay Economic Action Council (MTEM), will be protesting at the Ministry of International Trade and Industry.

Bangladesh is making world headlines with the sentencing of a 90 year old cleric to death for a massacre during Bangladesh’s 1971 War of Liberation. Abul Kalam Azad  was sentenced to death for crimes against humanity and found guilty of murder, abduction and looting during 1971 independence war. The 18th round of the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement began this week in Kota Kinabalu. Malaysia, along with 11 other countries, is part of the trade negotiations. The TTPA has drawn criticism from many quarters including the former PM Dr Mahathir. Yesterday, a coalition of NGOs, together with Parti Socialis Malaysia, protested at Parliament. Tomorrow, the Malay Economic Action Council has plans to protest at Ministry of International Trade and Industry. Meanwhile, MITI secretary-general, Rebecca Fatima Sta Maria, is reported to have said that an agreement has not been reached in many areas and that her Ministry we will not compromise Malaysia’s sovereignty.
