The Faceted Economics of Lab-Grown Diamonds
A simple WhatsApp message from a friend selling lab-grown diamonds took me back to a world I once knew closely—and made me realise just how profoundly the diamond industry has changed.
Years ago, I remember hearing the words, “Diamonds are for everyone.” At the time, they referred to better yields, greater efficiency and making diamonds more accessible. Today, those words have acquired an entirely different meaning.
Technology has transformed not only how diamonds are cut, but how they are created, valued, traded and trusted.
In this episode of Currents and Chronicles, I revisit the diamond industry through the lens of that transformation—from the precision of cutting and the rise of lab-grown diamonds to changing consumer expectations, digital marketplaces, traceability and the geopolitics reshaping global supply.
The distinction between natural and lab-grown diamonds also raises a fascinating question about value itself. Is a diamond valuable because of its rarity and geological history, or because of its beauty, design, accessibility and the meaning we choose to give it?
The industry I once knew was built around scarcity, craftsmanship and relationships. The emerging one increasingly combines those traditions with technology, transparency and consumer choice.
Perhaps that is the most interesting transformation of all.
Diamonds still teach us about light—but increasingly, they also teach us about economics, technology and perspective.
To catch light differently, sometimes you have to change your angles.
