Lyra Crosswell photographs the spaces between spaces - mezzanines, transfer tunnels, platforms that lead nowhere she can name. She thought it was aesthetic instinct. The Sitri Center thinks it's a map.
Cusp opens Cycle 3 of the Sitri Center arc as Meg and Tessa monitor Lyra's recurring dream, the one that builds toward a threshold and holds her there indefinitely, for the sixteenth time without crossing.
What Lyra's subconscious has been tracing in her sleep turns out to be the Institute's actual architecture. The station names in her dream journals - Sippar, Kutha, Eanna, Ereshkigal, Ur - are encoded in the maintenance panels of the unmonitored service corridors. The Sitri Center is not metaphorically connected to ancient ritual geography. It is that geography, built in concrete, and Lyra has been reading its blueprint all along without knowing she could read it. Desire horror from Neural Nets and Pretty Patterns.
