Listen Later

Kirsten Nelson Quote- Be OK with people hating your guts (Work actively on giving less f***s)
What does it mean to provide value in comics? What service are we providing for our audience as creators? As it turns out, sales and marketing is much more than dawning a sports coat and having an charmingly flamboyant persona. If you want to learn about the value your providing as a creator not only for your audience but for yourself, look no further than the breaker downer of brains- Kirsten Nelson.
This podcast talks everything from the gamification and addiction of social media, to the psychology of marketing and sales, to the psychology of the self. We talk the ethics. We talk imposter syndrome. We talk about the value of being both hopeful and jaded over time. Most of all, we talk about the genuine value that can be found in entertainment and especially indie comics.
Whether you understand it or not, niche markets like indie comics have tremendous possibility for success. It’s all about connecting the excitement of the unknown with something that your audience will know like and trust. Dark night of the soul is a very real thing for artists. That is to say, we often find it very difficult to separate themselves from their art. In order to survive we have to be able to float above your art and your audience in order to separate yourself from your art and realize that criticism of the thing is not criticism of you. In order to figure out how that feels you have to figure who you are as an artist and let that audience find you. Thus, the deep well of the indie comics industry becomes yours for the taking.
Let Kirsten guide each of us through the raw tips and tricks of self discovery based on years of experience as a marketer, a creator and a mom. If you have the courage to listen all the way through, you will learn not only how you can benefit others with your comic but who you are as a person and in the end we can finally let go as a minority of this lie we call “the starving artist.” If we dig down deep we’ll find a tremendous freedom in the recognition of our core values and find a completely new way of looking at the world that allows us to make money based not on the product
