D-Beat Radio episodes

  • DBR: Ska, Rocksteady, Reggae - The Sixth

On D-Beat Radio's 5 Year Anniversary, we honor the late, great Jimmy Cliff.

As many legends throughout history do, the whole story starts during a devastating storm…

In the Somerton District of St. James, Jamaica, a mother gives birth to a child, wraps him in a sheet, and takes him to shelter at a neighbor’s home as a hurricane blows her house away.

However, everybody agrees, “There’s something special about this boy.”

Born James Chambers in 1944, just into his teens he took the stage name Jimmy Cliff and began recording soon after moving from the countryside to Kingston.

He becomes famous by the age of 14 for a hit coincidentally entitled “Hurricane Hattie.” He goes on to popularize reggae music everywhere.

Cliff was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2010. Ten years later the U.S. Library of Congress added the soundtrack of The Harder They Come to the National Recording Registry, a list of audio recordings deemed “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.” Cliff’s other honors include receiving the Order of Merit (2003) from the Jamaican government.

The reggae legend Jimmy Cliff died at age 81 on November 24, 2025, from complications of a seizure followed by pneumonia.

He is survived by his wife, Latifa Belaydi, their daughter Lilty and son Aken, and other children from previous relationships, including the Brazilian actor and singer Nabiyah Be.

  • D-Beat Rodeo - Round 15

..."The archetypal western hero is a complicated figure, and the world he inhabits is a place of flux and contradiction. At the end, the stranger rides off into the wilderness, since the civilization he has helped to save holds no permanent place for him. His departure is also a promise of return, both for the star who plays him — John Wayne, Randolph Scott, Clint Eastwood — and, more profoundly, for the archetype he embodies, an archetype much older than the movies. This solitary, self-sufficient, often morally ambiguous figure — a man of violence with a shadowy background and a haunted look in his eyes — can trace his literary parentage back to Leatherstocking, the peripatetic hero of James Fenimore Cooper’s novels of 18th-century frontier adventure."

    - A.O. Scott (Nov. 11th 2007 - The New York Times)

  • D-Beat Rodeo - Round 14

    I'm just looking for
A way to break on through these walls and
    I'm just looking for
A place that I can call my home and
Does anybody out there got a soul
'Cause I'm just looking for the girl
The girl with a heart of gold

  • D-Beat Rodeo - Round 13

Have you ever heard the wind go “Yooooo”?
‘T is a pitiful sound to hear!
It seems to chill you through and through
With a strange and speechless fear.
‘T is the voice of the night that broods outside
    When folk should be asleep,
And many and many ‘s the time I ‘ve cried
To the darkness brooding far and wide
Over the land and the deep:
“Whom do you want, O lonely night,
That you wail the long hours through?”
And the night would say in its ghostly way:
    “Yoooooooo!
    Yoooooooo!
    Yoooooooo!”

  • D-Beat Rodeo - Round 12

Hey! Y'all came back! I guess ya heard.

Well, this may not be our first rodeo, but given that it's the grand ol' month of October, this particular song n' dance is gonna take a path less chosen. A dark, possibly haunted path, I reckon.

So enjoy this ray of sunshine while ye can, cuz the sun is settin'. And there be demons in these woods.

Abandon all hope, ye who enter here.

  • D-Beat Radio: Part 70 - Cold Cold Ground

No, he didn't die. Tom Waits is fine, as far as I know or at least at the time this episode is being produced. I've had this episode on the back burner for a long time because Tom Waits is my favorite.

    Favorite what?

Favorite everything. He's a fuckin’ legend.

And, to be honest, I was holding on to it to release if or rather when he died, but fuck that. It's the Fourth of July 2025 and Tom Waits is an American Hero!

Go listen to his music, read his lyrics and poetry, watch every film or documentary he's in, check out his art. Appreciate all things Tom Waits, cuz that dude's still fuckin’ alive and that makes us all very lucky.
