The Importance of College
College is important for many reasons, including increased career stability and satisfaction, and the ability to make an impact on our community. With more and more careers requiring advanced education, a college degree can have a significant and expansive impact on our life. It also has the potential to positively enrich us, our family and the world.
Here are reasons why college could be important.
1. Earn More Money
Workers with a bachelor’s degree, or even a master’s degree earn more salaries than those with only a high school diploma. It means that our college education offers a combination of general education courses and specialized learning in a discipline with both broad-based and field-specific knowledge. Many employers prefer having employees who have the right skills and knowledge to those who have not had any higher education. Having job security can provide us with peace of mind, in addition to a stable career. In college, we will learn skills that are valuable in workplaces, such as communication, time management, and problem-solving skills. Although salaries vary widely in every industry, having a college education can work with higher incomes. In other words, individuals with college degrees or certifications tend to have the potential to start off at a higher income, as well as more opportunities to earn promotions or career advancements.
2. Prepare for the Future
We can gain practical life skills as a college student. We learn assignments and projects in school. Once classes begin, we are surrounded by peers. Engaging with our peers through activities, like group work or class discussions, can be a great way to start a professional network, meet our future partners and make lasting friendships. When we’re in college, we have opportunities to connect with professionals in our field or industry at conferences or other events. We, thus, build various relationships that benefit our career with knowledge of upcoming job opportunities. Besides, when we’re in college, we find chances to discover what we’re passionate about. Our instructors and peers help us discover what matters most to us.
3. Achieve Independence
Going from high school to college is a big step in our life. When we go to college, we’ll be responsible for managing our time, handling a wide range of academic tasks, and making informed decisions about our education and career. This helps us become more independent, which can boost our self-confidence, too. College broadens our horizons by introducing us to a diverse range of perspectives. When we’re a college student, we can meet fellow students from other cities and backgrounds. Interacting with all these other people can change our perspectives, and let us have a chance to learn other communities and cultures. The benefits of higher education for individuals and society note that college graduates are more likely to donate money to charity organizations, volunteer and vote. A chance in college to engage with other viewpoints also leads us to better understand people who are different from us and situations we have never personally encountered. Moreover, going to college is a social experience as much as an academic one. Whether we attend school in-person or online, we’ll find people who have similar interests as us. We, then, have an opportunity to form new friendships that could end up becoming lifelong ones.
From potentially increasing our earnings and job opportunities to making new friends and expanding our views of the world, a college education is very important.
