Panchatantra comprises of an ancient Indian collection of animal stories that aim to spread wise conduct of life.
Once lived a foolish monkey in the palace of a noble king. He respected and loved the king very much. One day when the king was sleeping, the monkey stood there to guard him. Suddenly monkey noticed a fly that would come and sit on king’s chest even after the monkey swayed it away. The foolish monkey got angry, picked up a sword and took aim on the fly sitting on the king’s chest. The fly got away but the king was badly injured.
This story teaches us to be careful of a foolish friend who can cause us more trouble than an enemy.
Short but great moral stories for kids that can be used at bedtime or any other time during the day.

Once there was a bird that lived on a tree. On one cold winter night, a group of monkeys came to that the tree for shelter and noticed a pile of leaves next to it. They decided to light a fire to keep them warm but they had no fire with them. Then one of the monkeys saw a glow-worm, firefly, and thought if they would catch it and put it on leaves then the leaves would lit up.
The bird sitting on the tree advised them that it won’t work and kept on suggesting them to try to rub the sticks to light a fire. On the bird’s repeated interruptions, one of the monkeys finally got very upset, caught the bird, and threw it on a tree.
This story teaches us an important moral lesson not to give our advice unless we are asked for it. We cannot teach fools who are not willing to listen.

Once there lived a large group of rats and their king in a deserted town. The town was situated between a forest and a lake. In the forest lived a group of elephants and their king. When the forest started to run dry and elephants started to die of thirst, someone informed elephants about the lake across the town. Elephants crossed the town in search of water and in the process, they crushed many rats under their huge feet. When this became a daily process, the rat king decided to talk to the elephant king to apprise him of this and request him to change their path to the lake. Hearing this, the humble elephant king apologized and agreed to change the route.
There came a time when the elephants were in trouble as King’s men started to catch them. One day the Elephant king got trapped in the nets. When no other elephant came forward to help him, he called for the rat king to his rescue who along with other members of his rat clan was pleased to return the favor.
This story teaches us as important lesson that a friend in need is a friend in deed.
