  • Interview with Liverpool FC's First Black Football Player Howard Gayle
On this Episode of Dad Is Not A Noun I had the honor to talk to Liverpool FC's First Black Football Player Howard Gayle on the current state of racisms in football due to events of Euro2021. Also, he talked about his book 61 Minutes In Munich: The Story of Liverpool FC's First Black Footballer.
In April 1981, Howard Gayle was summoned from the substitutes' bench and sent on to play for Liverpool in the second leg of a European Cup semi-final at German champions Bayern Munich.
The previous October, by filling the same role at Manchester City, he became the first black footballer in Liverpool’s 89-year history to play at first team level.
Gayle's Liverpool career proved to be short. He would pull on the red shirt only five times in total, scoring once.
Yet he is remembered as a trailblazer. In 61 Minutes in Munich, Gayle takes you inside his life: bringing the shutters down on a childhood spent between Toxteth and Norris Green, two contrasting areas of Liverpool. He details life on the streets, the racism, the other forms of abuse, of which he has only told a handful of people before, and his ascent from teenage football hooligan to a player with Europe's leading club.
Gayle explains what it was like to be a black man with a sense of insecurity inside a Liverpool dressing room at the most successful point in the club's history, a place where only the strongest survived.
In Munich, Gayle ran Bayern's defenders ragged and is credited by many as the catalyst for Liverpool’s progression to the final. And yet, by being substituted after 61 minutes on the pitch, he reveals his dismay at never being trusted to keep his cool in the most tense of environments.
Gayle takes you to Newcastle, to Birmingham City, to Sunderland and Blackburn Rovers. He takes you back his modest home in the south end of Liverpool where it all began.
Part social-history, part-autobiography, 61 Minutes in Munich is an exposition of life in the city of Liverpool during one of the most turbulent periods in its history. Above all it examines how a pioneer like Gayle has been up against it from the moment he was born.

  • Interview with Marcel P Black
On this Episode of Dad Is Not A Noun I had the opportunity to chat it up with Baton Rouge/Tulsa best kept secret Marcel P. Black on his music, fatherhood, and etc. Baton Rouge veteran emcee Marcel P. Black has already received high praise from some of the most well respected names in Hip-Hop. Most recently Marcel was featured on XXL.com’s list “12 Baton Rouge Rappers You Should Know,” also highlighted on HipHopDX.com’s “Up Next By DX” feature.
A true grassroots, DIY, indie/underground emcee, Marcel balances being a leader in the Baton Rouge scene as he facilitates monthly and quarterly events in his local Hip-Hop community, and a pioneer/ambassador with a serious touring schedule that's led him to stages in every region of the United States, including festivals such as A3C in Atlanta, Georgia, the 2X2 Fest in Columbus, Ohio, Secret Stages in Birmingham, Alabama, and Jackson Indie Music Week in Jackson, Mississippi just to name a few.
Next to Marcel’s great music and work ethic, his claim to fame is his live show. A3C.com once describes Marcel’s performance style as “Baptist Deacon meets Gangster Rapper meets Malcom X.” Marcel has shared stages with KRS-One, Common, Jay Electronica, Mobb Deep, Run The Jewelz, Kevin Gates, & Slum Village, Skyzoo, and Elzhi, as well as underground heavyweights like Supastition, Sean Price (R.I.P.), Clear Soul Forces, Blueprint, Locksmith, and MegaRan.
Marcel has always used his platform as an emcee to bring light to social justice issues, from organizing benefits for National World Aids Day, organizing a benefit concert to raise money for the children of Alton Sterling, to speaking on panels and lecturing on the intersection between social justice and Hip-Hop in collegiate and high school classrooms. Marcel has worked in the field as a youth development worker for 18 years, most recently creating a curriculum and class called #FreeHipHop taught in middle and high schools in Baton Rouge. The husband/father/artist/activist/youth worker’s goal is to use Hip-Hop culture as a conduit to freedom.

Matt Prestbury started a Facebook group- Black Fathers- designed to be a platform where black men could post pictures and videos, along with typed posts, to showcase what it is that they do and go through as fathers.  Through his platform he understood that resources were needed, Matt, and his wife, Kelly, decided to create The Black Fathers Foundation, which would serve to create a physical entity that would carry on much of the work that took place within the online group, Black Fathers. In May of 2019, The Black Fathers Foundation was born.
