My guest today is NFL Super Bowl Champion, Tavon Wilson.

Tavon has played in the NFL for the past 10 years. He was drafted by the New England Patriots in the 2nd round (48th overall) of the 2012 NFL Draft.

While with the New England Patriots, Tavon won Super Bowl XLIX. His career in the NFL has included playing for the Detroit Lions, Indianapolis Colts and San Francisco 49er’s.

Tavon has two sons that mean the world to him. As a Professional Athlete, he spends a lot of time on the road, but he knows and understands the importance of spending quality time with his family when he is home and he is super attentive to spending that time with this two sons.

Russ was severely injured in 2013 in a diving accident in Lake Havasu.

That accident left him paralyzed instantly from the neck down.

Susan and Paul Kadilak run the design build firm, Kadilak Homes, based in the Greater Boston area.

They have just extended their reach globally, launching an app for their Emmy nominated home renovation show “Renovation Rekindle” complete with all ten episodes of season one as well as regular drops of new content. They are now in the middle of filming season two.

The show focuses on watching them help real world clients "rekindle" the love they once had for their home by turning it into the space they have always dreamed of having.

This husband and wife team specializes in building and renovating for today's families that live and work differently than they did 20, 10, and even 5 years ago!

The world is incredibly busy and full of noise so they focus on helping clients create a haven that they love coming home to.

As part of their journey in making their client's homes their favorite place on earth, the Kadilak's have built their business on the power of social media.

Five years ago they were given a very strong piece of advice: MAKE VIDEOS! So they tried it and it quickly grew their business, with a 60% increase in revenue after the first year! Video works!

Through their social channels they have been able to connect directly with potential clients, grow their social media audience, and develop a relationship before ever getting that first phone call.

Susan has been around construction and design her whole life When she brought her husband Paul into the business 15 years ago they made it their mission to bring change to the business while creating spaces that are practical, beautiful, and inspiring all while having fun!

If you don't think they have enough going on, Paul is also a firefighter and they have 4 children to keep them on their toes!

We talk a lot about their business in this episode, but we also talk about the challenges they have faced with trying to raise four kids while running several businesses.

Musician and singer-songwriter David Rosales joined this episode of Dad Up just before starting his summer road tour.

Rooted in Americana and bathing in West Coast sunshine, Los Angeles-native David Rosales aims to provide a light at the end of the Pandemic Tunnel with his new 12-track sophomore LP, REVIVE (out July 22, 2022). “Strange times need good vibes,” says Rosales. “I’m ready to give the world a much needed dose of positivity.”

Following his acclaimed 2018 debut, Brave Ones, and subsequent tours, Rosales settled into MAPS Studios in Fullerton, CA to record REVIVE in late February of 2020 with his friend, co-producer and touring drummer, Mike Willson. With the addition of a 'Memphis Horns' style brass section to his group of backing musicians, Rosales makes it clear that his sound has grown since the release of Brave Ones.

The majority of tracking was completed during a two week session and with REVIVE finished, Rosales and his Band of Scoundrels were set to hit the ground running in 2020 with tours planned both domestically and abroad. Then, COVID and the lockdown hit.

Rosales is more than just a musician. He is an outdoorsman, family man and does everything he can to give back to the community.

He's never one to sit still and with REVIVE shelved due to the pandemic, Rosales shifted gears.

Seeing how scared & stretched his community was, he took to playing weekly neighborhood “Driveway Hop” concerts so people could have a release and feel socially connected.

Additionally, through his non-profit charity, BraveOnes Foundation, Rosales was able to distribute PPE's and Meaningful Meals to various in-need families and health care heroes throughout his local community.

With REVIVE's summer release on the horizon, David Rosales & His Band of Scoundrels are set to hit the road, offering an uplifting and spirited live performance.

Kayla Stoecklein became an unexpected widow in August 2018 when her husband, Andrew, the pastor of their large church in California, died by suicide.

With three young boys also grieving and a heart full of pain, she began sharing her struggles that she captured in Fear Gone Wild released September 2020. She is also sharing the rebuilding process in her new book Rebuilding Beautiful which you can preorder now.

Kayla is an advocate for those confronting mental illness. It became her mission to bring hope and faith-filled help to others who have faced unexpected hardships, showing them that they not only have a purpose, but that they can build a beautiful life once again.

There's a stigma around mental illness, especially towards people of faith. We often think that suicide is selfish. Kayla will tell you that this is false and something she is passionate about correcting.

Kayla is very raw and honest about her experience and the grief that sets in each and every day.

The truth is, most people suffer from some form of anxiety, fear, anger, all the way to depression and some cases of severe depression.

There are so many things you can take from this conversation, but the most important thing I want you to hear is that you are NEVER alone. You are LOVED and SUPPORTED by so many people, more than you know.

This episode of Dad Up features a mom. Tamara Girardi writes children’s books often inspired by things her four children say or do.

During our conversation we talked a lot about her experiences writing children’s novels. It’s one of her passions as a writer.

One of her writing challenges is to write a new picture book idea every day, and she succeeds by going stealth and spying on the kiddos in their natural habitats.

No spying was necessary to develop her first book, Why, Daddy? Why? Her then four-year-old daughter regularly asked questions framed with the word parents everywhere dread: why!

An author of young adult fiction as well, Tamara signed a book deal with Wise Wolf Books in June of 2021 for six young adult contemporary novels to release in 2022 and 2023. The first is Gridiron Girl, set for released in March 2022. 

Also an academic, Tamara is an Associate Professor of English at HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College where she teaches creative writing, technical writing, composition, and literature online. She has a PhD in English from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and studied fiction at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland.

 

She has co-edited the essay collections Young Adult Literature in the Composition Classroom: Essays on Practical Application (McFarland), Hero or Villain?: Essays on Dark Protagonists of Television (McFarland), and Theories and Strategies for Teaching Creative Writing Online (Routledge).
