Dad Life 37-2 – Conflict Resolution for Kids: Teaching Calm in the Chaos
This week’s Dad Life episode is all about teaching our kids how to handle conflict—without shouting, storming off, or throwing their sibling’s favourite toy across the room.
We dig into the skills kids need to develop for handling conflict with siblings, friends, classmates — and yes, even parents — and how we, as dads, can lead the way by teaching and modelling these essential tools.
🔧 Key Conflict Resolution Skills & How Dads Can Teach Them:
Active Listening 👂
Show them how to stop, listen, and truly hear what the other person is saying — even when they’re upset. Practice during everyday chats or sibling disagreements.
Naming Emotions 😠😢😊
Kids often act out because they can’t express how they feel. Help them name emotions with phrases like, “You look frustrated — want to talk about it?”
Empathy Building ❤️
“How would you feel if that happened to you?” Simple questions like this help kids learn to see situations from someone else’s point of view.
Taking Responsibility ✅
It’s okay to make mistakes — but owning up is key. Model apologies, even when you mess up. Kids learn so much from watching us.
Finding Solutions Together 🧩
Instead of jumping in to fix everything, guide them in solving their own problems: “What do you think we could do next time?”
Knowing When to Walk Away 🚶♂️
Sometimes stepping back is the best move. Teach your kids that it’s okay to pause and cool down before dealing with an issue.
We also share personal stories, parenting wins, and those not-so-glorious fails that come with teaching our kiddos how to stay calm in chaos.
