We often speak Putonghua at school. But where does Putonghua come from? In fact, there are over 130 languages and lots of dialects in China. In the past, people from different places spoke their own languages. They couldn’t understand each other well. So, in the 1950s, China decided on a common language. They called it Putonghua. It is based on northen dialects, especially the dialect in Luanping, Hebei. It has simple pronunciations and tones. It’s so easy to speak and learn! Now, over 80 percent of people in China can speak it.

Take out a clip. Squeeze the skin at the back of a cat’s neck. Now the cat doesn’t move. When it is a baby, the mom cat carries it by holding its neck. Later, the cat grows up. Its brain still remembers it. When it feels something like that, it becomes calm and doesn’t move.

It is that time of the year again. Many countries hold their pumpkin weighing competitions. Growers wow us with one huge pumpkin after another. This year, a 1,247 kg pumpkin from the US set a world reord. It is about the size of a double bed. How can people grow such big “monsters”? Start with a champion seed. Many champion pumpkins grow from the seed Atlantic Giant. The seed came from Canadian grower Howard Dill. In 1981, he made a world record with a 224 kg pumpkin. He then patented the seed.
