As we begin concluding our harmonised study of the gospel, we shared together Jesus' message and charge to his disciples after his resurrection and through the book of John clarified what the gospel of Jesus is about.
In Matthew, Jesus tells the disciples; "Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
Matthew 28:18-20 NIV. The purpose of the gospel is clear, it is not just to make us citizen of heaven, but as ambassadors, we are to change this world for the Father.
According to Mark, Jesus says; "He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all; they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well.”
Mark 16:15-18 NIV. Same message with a promise that Jesus himself will back us up as his witnesses.
According to Luke, Jesus gives us the theme of our message and with the promise that the Holy Spirit was coming.
In John, we get an idea of the entire purpose of the gospel, our message is simple; "Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.
John 20:30-31 NIV. Our message is this, Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and by believing in, trusting in, surrendering to, sinners will have eternal life in Jesus' name.
Halleluyah!
